Product Description YOUNG BOY STUMBLES ONTO A WITCH CONVENTION AND MUST STOP THEM, EVEN AFTER HE HAS BEEN TURNED INTO A MOUSE.
Amazon.com essential video This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Although it was largely neglected during its brief theatrical release, this wonderful movie has since enjoyed a thriving appreciation on video--see it and you'll understand why. --Jeff Shannon

The Witches- DVD March 15, 2010 M. Midkiff (Center, Texas United States) I bought this movie to show to my class after reading The Witches by Roald Dahl. The picture quality is great, but the sound just wasn't very loud. I maxed out the volume on both the TV and my laptop in the classroom and it was medium loud. Needless to say, the class had really been into the book so they stayed quiet so they could hear it. I've never seen a class enjoy a movie so much in all my nineteen years of teaching! It was great! All other movies I've purchased at Amazon have been wonderful.
Excellent Movie February 20, 2010 Gabriel Bustos (USA) This is just a classic movie that everyone should see. It's funny and entertaining. My 6-year old has been watching this movie since he was 5. It's not too scary, and pretty much child-friendly .... in my opinion :)
only bad witches are ugly February 13, 2010 J. G. Crawford "The Witches" have always been one of my very favorite movies as a child because it is so animated and funny and imaginative. Anjelica Huston is wonderful as the Marxist 'Grand-High-Witch." She was so vicious and mean but she played it up totally like a cartoon character which added lots of comedy and depth to the entire movie. The late Mai Zetterling is Luke's grandmother was exceptional as the all-knowing witch expert. I also love this movie because it's based on a wonderful book, by Ronald Dahl which it is very true to. "The Witches" is a movie that your entire family will enjoy.
Wonderful Film...NOT LETTERBOXED! January 28, 2010 Ballet Boy (USA) Here we go again, just like The Trouble With Angels...the film is full screen and ruined! SAVE YOUR MONEY AND WAIT TILL IT'S ON TCM! IDIOTS!!!!
The Witches (Keepcase) January 25, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) A young boy, recently orphaned, is taken to England by his grandmother. At a hotel in which they are staying, a group of witches have gathered to prepare a plot to rid the world of all children. The Witches is the rarest thing you'll ever see, a black comedy for children. Adults just assume that kids don't have the level of wit and sophistication to appreciate sly and sarcastic humour this movie has. Anjelica Huston as the grand high witch gives the movie a special flavor. If you are looking for a classic, fun, adventure for all ages, yes all ages, I suggest you sit down with your family and watch this wonderful movie.
