Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.com essential video
This splendid adventure-fantasy from 1990 was adapted from Roald Dahl's book and directed by maverick British filmmaker Nicolas Roeg, who turned out to be a perfect (if seemingly unlikely) interpreter of Dahl's fiendishly clever tale of witchcraft in contemporary England. Scary, funny, and wildly entertaining, it's all about a young boy named Luke (Jasen Fisher) whose parents have died in a tragic accident, and whose grandmother (Mai Zetterling) takes him to a posh hotel in England, where a secret coven of witches is holding its annual convention. The Grand High Witch (Anjelica Huston, in a scene-stealing performance) has decreed that all children in England be turned into mice, and Luke and his pal Bruno (Charles Potter) are the first victims on the list. That's when the movie magicians from Jim Henson's creature shop have their work cut out for them, turning Luke and Bruno into clever little rodents and The Witches into a dazzling display of imaginative special effects, using a seamless combination of real mice and superb animatronic puppets. Director Roeg doesn't compromise the sinister edge of Dahl's story, but comedy gets equal time from the brilliant cast including Brenda Blethyn (from Secrets and Lies and Little Voice), Rowan Atkinson (of Black Adder and Mr. Bean fame), and Jane Horrocks (Little Voice) as the Grand High Witch's beleaguered assistant. Although it was largely neglected during its brief theatrical release, this wonderful movie has since enjoyed a thriving appreciation on video--see it and you'll understand why. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars Five stars for film - One star for DVD (average = three)   May 6, 2008
Dear Warner Brothers Home Video -

In a little more than a year it will be 10 years since you released this awful DVD of this terrific film. Isn't it about time you issued a new DVD of The Witches in its original aspect ratio (1.85 : 1 according to IMDb), with a cleaned up print, better sound and some extras? This film is practically a classic and loved by many. Think of all the money you'll make not only double-dipping us fans but also obtaining some new admirers.

Come on, be a mensch. Your inventory of these lousy DVDs can't be that big.

5 out of 5 stars A Movie Everybody Will Love   April 9, 2008
Witches is a fantacy which is fast moving and delightful to watch. The actors and actresses had as much fun making this picture as the viewers of the picture. The High Witch herself won an academy award for her part in the picture. In the end, all is restored to normal (for the humans at least).

5 out of 5 stars gift   April 9, 2008

5 out of 5 stars Sublime and Creepy Fairytale Magic   December 30, 2007

I can't praise "The Witches" enough. It is so wonderfully crafted, entertaining, and fun.
While possibly not for all ages because of ghastly images of ugly witches and scenes of children in peril (use discretion depending on what your kids find spooky), this is delightfully dark and yet frothy and warm. It's one of my all time favorite fantasy films. It's a shame there aren't more fairy tale films like this one.

The makeup, special effects, score, settings, and performances are terrific. Anjelica Houston totally shines with her evil German accent and her black and purple fashions. And those witches, how wonderfully revolting they are. This is not your typical American fantasy movie. It has such a European flavor and feel, so charming and twisted (not unlike the story's talented author, Roald Dahl).

When I watch this film I feel like a kid in a candy shop.
