Breaking up is hard to do--but that doesn't mean you can't have some belly laughs about it. iForgetting Sarah Marshall/i provides that rare treat: a romantic comedy about breakups, that is both romantic and funny. The laughs, especially from writer-star Jason Segel, are both heartfelt and raunchy, and the film is just unexpected enough that it keeps the viewer's attention till the end. The touches of producer Judd Apatow, who's famously retooled rom-coms to appeal to guys as much as women, are woven throughout the film, but Segel's script, reportedly based on many of his own experiences, is fresh and original. And adult. iForgetting Sarah Marshall /i features male genitalia laffs presented in unexpected and human ways (the nude breakup scene is played for giggles but also deep poignancy), and the language and sex scenes are strictly for grownups--and rightly so. Segel's script, and his performance as Peter, show that he understands the true nature of adult relationships, which provides the refreshing difference between this film and some of Apatow's other crude creations. The cast is sublime; Kristen Bell (iVeronica Mars/i) plays title character Sarah, a self-absorbed actress, and Russell Brand is her new British honey who accompanies her to--what are the chances?--the exact same Hawaiian resort as Peter, who's nursing his broken heart. Mila Kunis plays Rachel, the resort employee who gives Peter a reason to hope, and Paul Rudd is the surfing instructor who gives him his own brand of heartfelt advice ("When life gives you lemons, just say 'F--- the lemons' and bail," he says cheerily). The pacing is screwball, and the absurdities fly (a "Dracula" musical puppet show, and a surprisingly lovely Hawaiian version of "Nothing Compares 2 U"). Nothing the viewer will forget any time soon.--iA.T. 5 out of 5 stars Remember Jason Segel   January 6, 2009
A. Lefkovits (New Haven, CT USA)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall is Jason Segel's debut screenplay and it is fabulous. I look forward to his forthcoming work.

4 out of 5 stars It's hard to forget sometimes....   January 5, 2009
D. Roberts (Battle Creek, Michigan United States)
The present film is a cross between a party movie a Romantic comedy, and as such it has aspects of both genres. Most of the humor of the film is slapstick, while the basic outline of the plot is what you'd normally find in an RC film. br / br /The main character in the story is going through the most hellacious break-up you could imagine. She is a movie star, so he sees her everywhere, including myriad commercials. He goes to Hawaii to try get as far away from his problem as possible, but lo behold she and her new boyfriend are staying at the same hotel that he is! br / br /This makes for a host of awkward moments, and basically most of the humor in the film is derived from these kinds of moments that we all wish to avoid at all costs. br / br /Surprisingly, the movie does have a heart one can't help but feeling that it's a feel-good kind of film when all is said done. Kristen Bell and Mila Kunis are both absolutely gorgeous, but even more poignant is that they both have a screen presence and genuine acting skills. This film would have been pretty dull had these too been lame actresses. br / br /I watched the unrated version of the film I must say that there wasn't much of "shock value" in it, other than a seeming infatuation with male nudity {which I could have done w/out}. It was disappointing that it had a great many opportunities for female nudity, but declined to pursue it almost every time. In that view, it was a bit of a "teaser" movie. br / br /All in all, this was a film that was both trenchant and very funny at the same time. The breakup reminded me of a woman in my life who pulled the plug 4 years ago now, and yet I still can't get my mind off of her. Hence, watching a poor fellow turn into a basket case after he's dumped by his g/f is rather cathartic - and oh so relatable. You just might feel the same way!

3 out of 5 stars FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL IS ......FORGETTABLE!   January 1, 2009
! MR. KNOW IT ALL ;-b (TRI STATE AREA)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

My title is misleading, because I did enjoy this film. The cast is excellent, but the story seems familiar and a bit long for this fluff. It's a nice film with some funny moments, but it's not like it's something new. br / br /I was happy that they did include both the theatrical and unrated versions on the same DVD release. This is a practice I hope continues, because it's more than annoying to have to figure out which version to buy.....don't movie collector's spend enough money? There is a declaimer on the unrated stating there may be problems with playback!? I will have to watch that version and add to this review. br / br /The film is worth seeing, but it will leave your memory faster than saying Forgetting Sarah Marshall! The DVD has some interesting extras, deleted scene, etc. and the DVD transfer looks very good.

4 out of 5 stars as if you would forget Sarah Marshall   December 31, 2008
Pastor of Disaster (Wexford, Ireland)
..she's flippin gorgeous!! How did a fat lump like him get these magic chicks? It gives hope to us fellow fat lumps everywhere! What, it isnt true you tells me? br / br /Russell Brand is hilarious just being himself, he probably didnt even have a script, just turned up and joined in. Anyway, liked Knocked Up and Superbad and all of those, consistently amusing and will be added to my DVD collection forthwith. br / br /PS - Forgive the lack of apostrophes, I am giving them up for the new year. br /

3 out of 5 stars Dracula Whines   December 30, 2008
R. A Rubin (Eastern, PA United States)
br /Jason Segal is bleeding manhood in a relationship with a successful TV actress. There's the inevitable breakup as she goes off with the daffy British rock star. He takes a vacation to Hawaii to forget her. She and lover boy are in the hotel room next door. You get the picture. He whines, he cries, he finds hotel staff to have fun with. Mila Kunis is so cute for a rebound, so now Jason must find his true self, writing Dracula Opera's. Despite nudity and typical Apatow f-bombs, this comedy is sweet. br /
