Amazon.com This British production of Dickens's IChristmas Carol/I has been eclipsed by subsequent versions, but it stands on its own as a darkly atmospheric (if sometimes regrettably brisk) telling of the beloved tale. Even with the rough quality of existing prints, this IScrooge/I has a visual intensity that approaches the bold compositions of German expressionism. And in its central role it has a mostly forgotten star: Sir Seymour Hicks, one of the era's celebrated English stage actors. With his gnarled face and flyaway hair, Hicks looks every inch the mean old misanthrope, and his cruelty has a realistic quality missing in some of the more stylized interpreters of the role. Hicks had played Scrooge many times on stage (and before in silent film), and he gets the tenor of every "Humbug!" just right. As a bandy-legged Bob Cratchit, Donald Calthorp is a perfect Victorian illustration come to grinning life. I--Robert Horton/I

Not bad .. Iliked it but it wasn't the one I was looking for December 23, 2008 Bryan (Carpentersville, Illinois United States) I was looking for the version that they used to play on family classics with Frazer Thomas and Roy Lenard. I remember when I was a kid they used to play this specific version before they started playing this other you'd see on WGN channel 9. anyway like I said in the title that it wasn't bad. I liked it. I would have given it 4 stars but it wasn't the version I was looking for. If you enjoy the classic story of A Christmas Carol in black and white, I think you will enjoy this one too. br / br /For those of you interested there were to version that family classics played. the earlier version they used to play is the one I was looking for whiched starred Reginald Owens and Gene Lockhart. I found it here and ordered it through amazon. thought I have not watched it yet because I am waiting to watch it christmas eve night (traditional thing). br / br /Oh and from looking at the pictures on the case it looks as if it has been done over in color. though I was looking forward to the old black and white look of it. its something about watching it in black and white that gives it that old fashion christmas feeling. It's like watching "It's a wonderful life" in black and white. you just have to apeciate the classics, I guess.
Very good version of A Chistmas Carol December 22, 2008 Ervin Arana (South Carolina) This is a very good early film version of the Dickens classic, I would recommended to any Dickens and old black white films fan.

To anyone looking to buy the Sir Seymour Hicks version of "Scrooge" - DO NOT BUY THIS ONE! LEGEND FILMS should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves in offering this abridged version and leading the unwary buyer to believing it to be the complete version. I watched the film last year on the IMAGE label and enjoyed it very much. It is flawed, but has some truly wonderful sequences that should not be missed. But if you watch this truncated version you will miss some of the best parts - twenty minutes worth! And the full version has arguably the best ending to any Scrooge movie I've ever seen - and I have seen them all. (I won't give the last scene away and spoil it - but you will not find it in LEGEND's disc! The ending actually brought a tear or two to my eye - it is that emotionally touching.) Now, LEGEND packaged the disc beautifully - and the Menu screen is beautiful and I could run it all day as background to opening presents on Christmas Day...and it is nice to see color in this film, but NOT at the price of missing twenty crucial minutes! And the bw transfer on LEGEND is NOT better than that of IMAGE's. LEGEND would have done better if they skipped the cartoon extras (delightful though they are) and given us the missing minutes of this enjoyable and atmospheric film. So - buyer beware!!!!
