John Le Carre for the Internet generation, the BBC's IMI-5/I is a smart combination of TV cop show and George Smiley-esque espionage shenanigans that pulls no punches in its depiction of an MI-5 (the British CIA) team fighting a covert war on the streets of London. This is adult, post-watershed drama clearly inspired by the hard-hitting style of shows as I24/I and IThe Sopranos/I. The strong ensemble cast is led by charismatic Matthew MacFadyen as Tom Quinn, star spy of "Section B," the counterterrorism branch headed by Harry Pearce (Peter Firth). Keeley Hawes, David Oyelowo, and tough-cookie Jenny Agutter make up the team. And as with its British predecessors, ICracker/I and IPrime Suspect/I, IMI-5/I (titled ISpooks/I originally) also delves fearlessly into the characters' turbulent personal lives, here given an added twist by their constant need to deceive even those they love. The six episodes of the BAFTA Award-winning first season tackle a variety of tough issues, including religious fanaticism, racism, governmental cover-ups, and, naturally enough, the lingering shadow of Irish terrorism. Throughout, the show strikes a fine balance between a James Bond-ian techno-obsession with spy gadgets and more character-based action, with crisp writing and direction that ratchets up the tension a notch further with every episode.  AKA Spooks is Worth the Investment! December 30, 2008

Having a region free DVD player (a must have with good volume of TV series coming from across the pond and beyond), I purchased the series (1-5) under the original title "Spooks" via a package offer on Amazon UK (FYI, a much less costly alternative even with the shipping to the USA). br / br /I debated on whether to give this series 4-stars or 5. I am mid way through series 4 and I would rate the series on a whole to be very good-excellent. br / br /*It may take an episode or 2 to become accustomed to the accents br / br /Likes: br /The vast majority of the plot lines are tightly woven and rely more on independent/group thought and less on physical action. As a matter of course being that most of the hard core action is farmed out to SAS units (unlike many American series where the deep thinkers are also martial arts experts and crack shots). The main characters all have flaws. Unfortunately, Hugh Laurie, as head of MI-6 (think CIA to the MI-5/FBI) is only with us for 1-series. His comic wit is a precursor of what is to become "House." br / br /Dislikes: br /There are some uneven plot lines, which I suppose is the case with many series bar the absolute best. New characters are brought into the series while others fall off at a greater rate than is typical with American "hit" series. There may very well be a point to this, however, IMHO, this makes for some of the uneven plot lines, though it could simply come down to personal preferences in getting involved with a character(s) over a course of several seasons. br / br /All in, I would rate the series as a must watch and would reiterate my prior advice re: purchasing a region free DVD player and checking out some of the great series on Amazon UK br /
 A fantastic first season to a great series November 23, 2008

Mi-5 or, as it is known in the UK, 'Spooks', is a really gripping, fast-paced series featuring some of the best scrips the 'Beeb' have ever got their hands on. br / br /This first season is a thrilling set of 6 episodes that catapulted the show to great heights. It's not quite as fast paced as shows like 24, but holds its own with a combination of large-scale production and wonderfully dramatic story lines. br / br /Whilst most people focus on the grizzly ending of episode 2, watch out for the amazingly intense end to episode 6, and indeed the end of the season, where you will be on the edge of your seat until the end and then completely surprised!

Based upon the generally glowing reviews, I got a copy of the complete first season of MI-5. I was disappointed. Billed as a combination of '24' and other highly-regarded spy thrillers, MI-5 was not anywhere near the quality of 24. br / br /The first episode repeated the unoriginal concept that if a British drama has an American in it (especially one with a Southern accent), then the American is the guilty party and is generally an idiot or worse. That's episode one. br / br /Episode two was no better. In keeping with the liberal bent of the BBC, a politician who wanted to fight illegal immigration was evil, nasty, and worse to the people who want to decide themselves where they want to live, regardless of the country they've decided to move to. br / br /These two episodes were all that I could watch. I threw the set away in disgust. br / br /Forget it, not recommended at all.

MI-5 Season 1 is taught, fast paced, and edge of your seat. It is smart and full of action. That said, the Season 1 Finale was contrived, forced, and lacking in credibility.
Great Spy Thriller! May 19, 2008

I LOVE this series! I have seen all of them through season five and can not wait for season six to become available in the US. If you like spy thrillers you will love this show. The plot's are intricate and always entertaining. This is the only show I have seen where bringing in new characters after a beloved character dies or leaves has been successful. I find I like the new characters just as much as I did the character no longer on the show.
