Durability Problems November 21, 2008 Paul G. Schloemer (Louisville, KY USA) I bought this for my parents last Christmas. It worked fine until this past October (of course, after the 3 month warranty) when it just simply stopped working. It was never dropped or anything. The power light was on, but that's all. I called tech support, who told me there was nothing that could be done, and all they could do was to send me a 50% off coupon for the purchase of the same model. When I asked the guy why I would want to buy the same brand again when it just stops working he answered simply "I understand." I don't know if ours was a lemon or not, but I'm certainly not going to risk a Smarparts purchase ever again!
Superb picture quality- Hardcore photographer's choice November 19, 2008 Linan Chen (Chicago, USA) The picture quality is superb, much better than most picture frames, including Kodak's newest models. If you care about picture quality, you can't go wrong with this frame. However, the 10" frame from Smartparts is way worse than this 8.4" frame. Beware. It is also very easy to use, pop in your memory card, the slide show will start automatically in one second. It recognizes most my memory cards, including 512M, 2G, 4G SD and 128M, 2G, 4G CF. However, it has issue with my 16G CF card. The frame shuts down itself for no reason from time to time, the behavior is very unpredictable. All in all, this is excellent frame, with 800x600 resolution and excellent contrast and color.
Not Mac compatible November 18, 2008 P. Mazurowski (Tonawanda, NY) In spite of what it says or doesn't say on the box or in the Amazon description or on the smartparts web site, This frame IS NOT MAC COMPATIBLE! Tech support insisted that it was mac compatible because you can plug the frame into your usb port and the internal ram will mount on the desktop. If you own a mac, in order to display images on the frame, you have to use third party software that is not included in the packaging and not mentioned in the instructions to strip the desktop icon files from the sd card or internal ram. Furthermore, the only audio file that it will play is WMA. You have to again purchase third party software for the mac to convert to WMA. In fact it is not MP3 capable or quicktime capable, which is the format used in many digital cameras. That just doesn't sound like "compatible" to me. And it doesn't sound very smart on smartparts part either. LOL
You can't write this stuff...one problem after the next! November 16, 2008 S. Trudeau (Minneapolis, MN United States) I can't believe that Consumer Reports recommended anything from this company. I got this frame for my husband as an anniversary gift in August, and I still don't have a working frame (I write this on November 16). The first frame never turned on. It was completely dead. I tried running the update that Smartparts wants you to do online, and that did nothing. I contacted the company and was told I would receive a new power cord. The cord never came. I called back and was told that the cord wouldn't have fixed the problem (which made me realize that this must be a frequent issue) and that they had no record of my phone call. They asked me to run the update again. Nothing. They emailed me a return label and I sent the frame to them for repair for replacement. I got my second frame, but they didn't send back the power cord, the remote, or the stand. Kind of tough to use a frame with no power source. After a week or so, I got those parts and the did turn on...for a day. The morning after I got it, I turned it on and got a white screen with thin, vertical stripes. I called and emailed Smartparts again. This time, the man I was speaking to asked me to stop venting to him (I am super polite on the phone...it's the teacher in me). He told me that my SanDisk was the problem. I tried fixing it by running the online update AGAIN, but nothing changed. He said it might work again if I got an SD card. I told him I was not willing to purchase a separate memory card for a frame that has continued to fail for me and is supposed to work via the USB cable that comes with it (which, by the way, they recommend NOT using right in the user's manual). I insisted that I wanted to return it for a refund. He refused to offer a refund, but sent me a return label after I pushed the issue. That was over a month ago. I still haven't received the third frame. I have contacted them twice about the third frame, and both times was told it would ship the next day. Basically, I really wish that I hadn't ever purchased anything from Smartparts. Only one customer service rep. I spoke to was helpful. The others were evasive and frustrating. I have spent so much time and energy on getting this frame thing to work. I am taking the time to write this so people can go another route. There are more reputable companies out there who make similar products. I highly encourage you NOT to purchase an item from Smartparts.
Nice November 16, 2008 Elmer Fud (Dayton Oh) Nice but was a bit disappointed that it was using the older awi files instead of the more modern mp3. Nice picture quality.
