Delightful December 17, 2006 Jane Doe (USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a happy, feel-good movie, set in Wales, based on a true story. Quite enjoyable.
Uplifting the Audience Right Along with the Mountain October 31, 2006 Teri Toth (Silver City, NM USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
There are several movies that focus on the coming together of a British village to accomplish something that benefits them all. This one has the unique advantage of educating the audience in the nuances of Welsh naming conventions! A fine cast and a well-written story set in the rolling green countryside of Wales round out the overall pleasures of the film. Anyone who confesses to being a smidgen of an Anglophile, and even those who don't, will enjoy this film.
The Englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain June 5, 2006 Christopher J. Lowerson (Ffld. Ct..) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The Englishman who went up a hill but came down a mountain is a lengthy last name, far more lengthy than many. The story revolves around two gentleman who after serving in Her Magesty's in the first world war are sent to Wales to survey as cartographers. Well the story takes a twist when they arrive in a small town to take the height of what to the town is a mountain and more than that the town's pride. According to the the first calculations it would seem that the mountain is not actually a mountain at all, but a hill. No big deal, right? Wrong! The town has always been sure that it has sat in view of a Welsh mountain. I won't ruin the film and give more about the plot than that, but the film is a good one. Hugh Grant gives a nice performance in this lesser known production and the enchanting Tara Fitzgerald supports gracefully. The film develops the characters in a story that most anyone can relate to. The real twist is that it's a true story explained in the end if you watch throught the credits.
Simply Nice Feel-Good Film That Is Beautifully Filmed April 30, 2006 Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
This was a very pleasant surprise, a nice movie with one of the simplest "plots" you'll ever see yet one that was fun to watch develop. There are no nasty characters. They aren't all goody-goodies, either, but they're all interesting people to watch. The story is simply about a pair of cartographers (map makers) who measure a "hill" in Wales and much to the displeasure of the locals, it isn't tall enough to be considered a mountain, which is what the townsfolk always considered it. So, the locals work together to build it up so it will qualify to be officially labeled a mountain. Sounds simple and even stupid, but it isn't. Along the way, a romance buds between Hugh Grant and Tara Fitzgerald. There also is some nice cinematography in here. Some might find it boring but I didn't. There was just something about this, a charm that made me feel good as I watched it and had me smiling even more by the end. This is a "sleeper," a movie you might pass up..... but don't.
It's a small but great movie January 18, 2006 April lotus I am superised to see some people rated this film so low. Well, even "Shawshank's redemption" has been rated one star by some peple, what you can say? There are always some people different. This comedy is sweet and funny, and one of my favorite. Actually Hugh Grant's acting is as same as his normal style, nothing exciting. But the whole movie is still great.
