3 out of 5 stars Jinkies this was bad.   May 8, 2005

Face it: Scooby-Doo is a great character. Who else can you cheer on, that's a complete coward, and only does things in the name of food? While I didn't exactly grow up with the original show, I did grow up with A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, and made sure to catch all the original episodes of the classic it was spun-off of. Of course, I liked it, and it was a big part of my cartoon diet. Sadly, growing up, people ruined it for me, making constant stoner jokes and the usual. By the time the live action movie came out, I didn't care that much. It looked like just another live version of a classic franchise that would ultimately suck. Giving it a chance this week and sitting through it, I was right.

The movie starts out in the middle of a case with the whole gang- busting a "monster" that kidnapped Daphne. Old men farmers and their costumes...when will they ever learn? Once it's over, the press comes in, along with the personality-lacking Pamela Anderson, and ask what happened. Fred takes all the credit as usual, and the gang breaks up, dispite Shaggy trying to hold everything together with a banana split analogy. Everyone goes their seperate ways, until Shaggy and Scooby get an offer to crack a case, once they find out a reward is all-you-can-eat. On their way to the airport, they run into the others, and low and behold, the gang is reunited for another case. Destination- Spooky Island, where happy go lucky college students arrive, but leave brainwashed. Along the way, Shaggy gets a love interest, Daphne tries to be more than just bait for the monsters, Velma tries to be more independent, and Fred...is Fred. But Scooby is in the most danger, as he's a key ingredient in the whole brain washing scheme.

Yes, that's the whole plot. There are almost no twists or turns, and everything's predictable. There's just not a whole lot of good I can find in the movie. In fact, I can list it right now for you:

-Scooby and Shaggy are dead-on identical to their cartoon versions
-Scooby is full of personality, and always had me laughing and even feeling bad for him whenever he'd start to tear up
-Linda Cardellini is even sexier than usual as Velma
-Scrappy-Doo is featured, and if you're one of the millions that hate him, you'll want to see what happens to 'em

That's all the good I can point out. Everything is is pitiful. First, there's Sarah Michelle Gellar. I can not stand this girl. Between her lack of personality and facial expressions, she's never convinced me of any part she's playing. Heck, I couldn't watch an episode of Buffy thanks to her. She's the Al Gore of actresses. Her lines constantly sounded forced, and I couldn't care less what happened to her character. Fred just looks weird, and they could've picked just about anyone else for the part. Rowan Atkinson is barely used, and if provided with a better script, his scenes could've been memorable. The plot is equally bland. Basically, you've got an ancient item that can take the souls of people, and transport poorly animated CG bunnies into their bodies, making them mindless drones. The souls then go into some cooking pot where the secret antagonist is hoping to gain something nobody cares about. And of course, they tried to make Shaggy come off as a stoner in two scenes. When he runs into his love interest for the first time, she tells him that her name is Mary Jane. He then replies with, "that's my favorite name". Yeah, I get the whole drug thing, but leave that for another time. This is a kid's movie, and that joke was wasted.

The special features partially boost the rating. First are a pair of dull commentary tracks, one with the director and producers, and the other with the cast. The first one is full of pauses, and the guys are more or less just watching the movie, making small comments about what's CG and what's not, as if we couldn't figure it out on our own. As for the cast commentary, there area lot of pauses once more, though they actually have fun talking about everything. Matthew Lillard says "that's great" about nearly every scene, Linda tells some funny stories about her outfit (like how she taped her skirt to her legs to prevent certain views, as Velma wouldn't let such a thing happen), Freddie Prinze Jr. sucks up to Sarah...and Sarah butts in whenever anyone else is talking, and basically makes this her commentary. All she does is complain and sound like a chicken-wuss, going, "those knives were so sharp in that scene. If I had gotten any closer, I would've died". She says that in just about any scene involving stunts, and eventually, everyone makes fun of her for it, shutting her up for a few minutes thank god. Neither of these tracks provide any real insight to the movie, or how it got started, which would've been nice to hear about, as it failed in theaters and financially. Next, are 13 minutes' worth of deleted scenes, with or without commentary by the director (who once again, barely talks). None of them add much to the movie, making it seem even slower than it already is, except for two scenes involving Velma. One where she's laying down on a piano singing, and another where she's in a bikini in a locker room. Go ahead and call me a typical guy, but Linda Cardellini is a stunning woman, and deserved much more spotlight than Sarah Michelle Gellar's sorry self. There was also an alternate, animated opening that they all decided against, as this is an al-live action movie. There's a 23 minute featurette, full of behind-the-scenes stuff, mostly about how hard it was filming things with Scooby, since there wasn't anything there. Creepily enough, they had a Scooby-Doo head on a stick that was used for eye contact in scenes. I want that thing. It'd be great to peek over a bathroom stall with. There's a video by Outkast for the movie, which was a nice addition, though the song isn't anywhere near as good as their other material. The video itself is basically the one for Roses with Scooby-Doo characters and darker settings. Finally are some very short featurettes about settings and the Mystery Machine. It may seem like a lot of special features, but when it comes down to it, you can breeze through everything in about 45 minutes, save the commentaries. Also included is a UFO Catcher type game, and the usual trailers + DVD-ROM features.

By all means, this isn't a good movie, but I did raise the score for the special features (I was just expecting trailers in all honesty), and the quality on Matthew Lillard's behalf. That's the only time you'll hear me say that too, by the way. Plus the CG quality on Scooby-Doo was nothing short of impressive, and any movie that has Linda Cardellini, especially in Velma's outfit, is alright in my book. Just don't watch this expecting much. If you've seen the movie versions of Fat Albert, Dudley Do-Right, The Flintstones and Garfield, then you'll know what quality the overall movie has. Or lack of...

3 out of 5 stars "Spooky Island" could have been so much better!   May 6, 2005

Even though I've been a major Scooby Doo fan for as long as I can remember, I am going to have to say that I am in complete agreement with most previous reviewers in giving this movie 3 stars. The film is about average in relation to the amount of entertainment it provides and most of the jokes fall flat. The plot is only about average, and the film is missing that extra something...

The good things first:
1) Matthew Lillard is an amazing Shaggy!
2) Rowan Atkinson and Pamela Anderson were a great surprise!
3) The special effects were pretty good.
4) As for Scooby Doo himself, he was very good.

On the negative side now:
1) What happened to Fred and Velma? He is obnoxious, arrogant and conceded. She is all sensitive and apparently suffering from some kind of a complex. Not good...
2) An evil Scrappy??? Were the writers out of their minds?
3) The "dance" at the cavern was so sad...
4) The music was not as good as it could have been (it was actually pretty bad...).

The potential for a great movie was there if only the writers had the ability to... write! A shame really...
In all honesty, I'll take the cartoons anytime compared to both Scooby Doo movies (the sequel is actually worse), though if you're a Scooby fan you might want to give it (or them) a try, but keep in mind it's no masterpiece.

Some scenes are downright silly, but overall OK.
If you are a Sarah Michelle Gellar fan, then you will not be disappointed.

1 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT SCOOBY DOO!!   March 9, 2005

AVOID THIS THRASH LIKE THE PLAGUE!This is not Scooby Doo, once that all the characters were played wrong! The Scooby Doo cartoons are funny, and this is not funny! This is not even a Scooby Doo movie, this is a movie about 4 retarded kids and a ordinary dog who are involved on a stupid and mindless story. If you want real Scooby Doo stuff, go for the original TV serie and the animated movies that are the best you can find out there! I repeat: THIS IS NOT SCOOBY DOO! This is a thrash movie that was suggested by the original cartoon but the producers of this involuntary thrash got the ideas all wrong! A REAL THRASH MOVIE WITH NO FUN TO FORGET FOR THE LIFE! IF YOU REALLY LIKE SCOBBY DO AND ARE A CLEVER PERSON, AVOID THIS!
