A slice of Heaven February 25, 2008 C. Ridgill 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
For me this movie is the type of movie for a slow Sunday when you think, oh I have nothing to do but then you think oh I can watch my Ladies in Lavender. And when you are watching it, the swollen emotional ache that is etched across Judi's face is just so touching. It is just heartbreaking to see her realize everything she has missed out on. Then with the intrusion of their lives that Andrea is, she gets to have a little glimpse of that life only to have it pulled right out from under her. My heart just breaks for her as I watch. This movie is just a sliver of what Judi and Maggie are capable of. They are magnificent.

This is a movie for those who love gentle English dramas with actors who look like real people, not Tom Cruise clones. It is charming, amusing and uplifting. Takes the fear out of growing older.
sweet love story: ageless December 26, 2007 Mary M. Mcharris (Tennessee) Wonderful acting and love in many forms displayed beautifully in another country. Will watch and enjoy many times.
Veddy, veddy English December 21, 2007 Essie (Seattle, WA) This was a rather unusual movie. Although some of it was somewhat unbelievable and the ending is weak, it presents some lovely moments with Maggie Smith and Judy Dench. It's very English and that's the part I loved.
A lovely little film December 19, 2007 Ben (Lincoln, CA, USA) I loved the film. Yes, it's the subject matter can make one uncomfortable at times ("An unattractive 60 year old woman falling in love with a young man in his 20s? Ick!"), and has no tidy Hollywood happy ending, but then life is that way, yes? I initially got it because it's got Maggie Smith and Judi Dench, and I like period pieces. I ended up surprisingly moved by it. I had never heard of Daniel Bruhl before, but I found him completely convincing, not to say handsome as hell, so I'm going to have to go out and rent "Goodbye Lenin!" to see more of him. Smith and Dench provide terrific performances, as would be expected. I also found myself really enjoying Miriam Margolyes as Dorcas, the housekeeper. The joking relationship that develops between her and Bruhl is quite fun to watch. Some have complained that this movie is slow and never has much of a climax. Fair enough, but why do all movies have to have these things? Sometimes I just like seeing a story slowly unfold. If you do too, you'll like this film.
