Hit or Miss, but Mostly Hits July 5, 2006 Robert T. Kennedy (Newark, DE USA) 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
The Black Adder set, while overall pretty good, varies from series to series in quality. I preferred III and IV, with II then I rounding out my order of enjoyment. The picture quality is good, but the sound is so-so. One of the better special features are the Footnotes to History. Watching these BEFORE watching each series helps us non-Brits get more of the jokes. I also enjoyed the various perfomances by the casts, as the actors are pretty much the same throughout the different series. I assume that someone with a greater knowledge of British and European history would rate this set even higher, as I`m sure I will upon several more viewings. If you like Britcoms, this one requires a little more effort to get all of the jokes than a straight comedy such as Fawlty Towers or Coupling, but it is indeed worth the effort.
Blackadder the memories July 3, 2006 Peter F. Macready 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
They were as good as I remember them the first time, though I did not see all the first time. The collection shows the improvement that Ben Elton gave to the writing and how Blackadder evolved from a Mr Bean lampoon type character to one I felt more comfortable with. The series is one of a very select band that can be watched over and over again as there are so many layers of jokes and innuendos that it takes several viewings to get them.

If you even have a slight interest in the Black Adder series or think Rowan Atkinson somewhat amusing, then buy this compilation. If you really love Black Adder and think Rowan Atkinson may be one of the funniest people alive, then buy this as well. This compilation includes all episodes from all four runs of Black Adder plus a one-hour stand-alone episode. The funniest are probably the first three series (middle ages, renaissance, enlightenment), while the last (WW I) is okay, and the stand-alone was not the best. That stated, you'll watch this over and over as the lines Atkinson delivers are some of the best written.
Great series, but it shouldn't be more than $49.95 June 9, 2006 David F. Nolan (Tucson, AZ United States) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
I love Black Adder. It's one of the top ten comedy series ever, IMHO. The first season is a bit weaker than the rest, but it's still a great series overall. I bought it on VHS about ten years ago, and I watch various episodes quite often when I'm in the mood for some delightfully silly humor. And y'know, I'd upgrade to the DVD set if it cost $50 -- but apparently it's not currently in stock, and it's not worth $69-$86 used - or even new. So the smart thing to do is to buy Series II thru IV as individual purchases, for a total of $36. You can skip Series I (unless you feel you have to own every episode) and the not-so-funny "Back and Forth" episode, which is pretty feeble, and you'll have all the best eps for two bucks each! (After I posted this review, the price for the individual series was raised to $18 each. Apparently, someone noticed the price anomaly. If they ever go back down to $12, grab 'em!)
excellent.... as always.. April 3, 2006 Aziz Ala'ali (Dubai, U.A.E) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I can watch this over and over again, and still find it funny.
