Fantastic July 8, 2008 The entire cast is incredible. A good historical film adaptation - as far as they usually go (pathetic). Historical assumptions have to be made in many areas and if they are off we can't know; though the film is made so well that you could hardly care in the moments when you're watching it. Excellent cinematography, as well. I purchased the DVDs because I missed the beginning of the HBO viewing and but caught the scene in which Adams has an audience with George III. It's a rediculously good scene and it's still my favorite after watching the whole mini-series. Watch with a history-loving friend, and enjoy.
John Adams July 8, 2008 After having watched the mini-series on HBO I was thrilled to see that it went to DVD. I thought it was a very thought-provoking, conversation-starting series. It was something that I haven't done since ROOTS was on TV all those years ago. It had been a long time since any mini-series had drawn me to be disappointed about missing an episode. Thanks to HBO for putting it on DVD. It gives a side of John Adams that no one ever really knew about; about how he got involved in the Revolution and how he felt about public service.
A whole new appreciation for the men who founded our country! July 8, 2008 How very lucky we were to have those men at that time!! In these days of superficial debates about flag pins and flip flops and other nonsense items and accusations about relatively meaningless things like who's more arrogant or whose preacher is more offensive or who panders more to whom, it is especially poignant to be reminded about the great stakes we had then and have today and an vivid example of a much more effective way to address our challenges and find ways to work together. These imperfect men gave us a tremendous gift - one we would be wise to treat with greater care than our current political diatribe demonstrates.
Fascinating Biographical film. July 7, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My wife and I watched this sweeping epic about the founding of my country this weekend. We found it to be fascinating, both well written and well acted. Portrayed in this mini-series is a grittier and dirtier America at its birth, less flowery, but in the end more inspirational because of it.
This story tells about a great man and the great woman who allows him to be great. It tells about how different men have different gifts, and how different men with different gifts were able to accomplish what was so improbable, that impossible seamed a more apt description.
What I found most remarkable and memorable about this saga, is the incredible sacrifice of service great men were asked to offer, and that they accepted and fulfilled the request. Duty, Duty, Duty. That great men are pulled from their preferred occupation to serve in government reluctantly, out of duty because no one else willing (or is capable to) do the job needed.
Where are those great men today?
If you are in the mood for an inspirational if lengthy bio-pic, John Addams is a good way to spend 5 Hours!
A revoutionarily good purchase July 7, 2008 I am happy with the overall experience. I ordered this and received it within five business days. I especially enjoyed the apparent care and attention given to historical accuracy. Great mini-series!
