The music is #1, Alex O' is the reason to see 3X October 21, 2008 Patrice Bader (Towson, MD) Watched enough of the Tudors to know JRM is a smooth skinned tour de force. I had to watch my favorite Vampire be a big brother to this conflicted musician and had to hear the music. Robin Williams gave me the creeps, like watching something morph into something old and threatening. Buy it for the Music, enjoy Alex as Marshall, the "up for a fight" brother.
Just too implausible October 19, 2008 L. Price (Colorado, USA) 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
I found this movie highly unbelievable and rather insulting. Within the first minute, I was thinking "Do eleven-year-olds actually talk like that?" I wish they had had a young person write Evan's narrative, because when you leave it in the hands of somebody who just wants to write a masterpiece, something gets lost in translation for me. The whole narrative seemed contrived. About Evan being a prodigy, this is possible. Who knows what children see and hear and imagine? But it really bothered me that the main character immediately had the ability to flawlessly play instruments (e.g., guitar, piano, organ -- hell, whistle!) after little or no previous experience -- And that he magically had the ability to compose music! Don't even get me started about magically being accepted to Juilliard. Being underage, with no parents, no guardian, no papers, no records, little musical experience -- Was he recommended by that church singer? Because I honestly have no idea how he got through all these obstacles without anybody thinking, "Gee, where DID this kid come from?" If you're looking for a modern day fairytale, this one has definitely got the fairytale part covered. But there are so many better ones out there. I'd rather have a fairytale that didn't scream: "It's okay, kids, people, everybody! Just follow the music, and in a few months, you'll be a prodigy! You'll know it all!" That didn't have to call itself a fairytale just because it couldn't hold enough water to be a proper story.
This Isn't Just a Heart Warming Story - It Is a Lesson About Staying True to Yourself October 16, 2008 Brian Pray (New Jersey, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
To be honest, I really wasn't expecting much when my wife and I sat down to watch this movie. I was so wrong. This is a good movie with a touching story, good music and more importantly, a great message. August Rush is not just a story about a boy prodigy who tries to reconnect to his parents through a shared gift of music. No, this is a story that teaches a lesson about being true to yourself and listening to those strong feelings that we all have from within. Of course we are all not blessed with the musical genius that "August" possessed, but we do all have something from within that we can and should be passionate about, something we should have absolute and unwavering belief in. We just need to listen to that inner voice and pursue that dream rather than following the masses because it is the "right" thing to do. I thought the actors were well cast and for the most part were believable. The story itself left me shaking my head a couple of times but that is okay- I still enjoyed it and the music was great. Overall I think it is a movie that is well worth watching. Especially if the embedded lesson is transferred.
Very Good, But could have been Better! October 15, 2008 william Spickerman (Bossier City, Louisiana) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I saw a clip of this movie on YouTube and decided to buy it on Amazon. While I enjoyed it overall, I would have liked it better if they focused more on this boy's musical talents as he was growing up, instead it starts after he is already a preteen, and the Movie focuses more on building to the climax of his musical talent bringing his lost parents together which was the end of the movie. The best parts of the movie total about 15-20 minutes, and the rest of it seems like nothing more than filler. This movie could have been so much better if the focus was more about the life and behavior of a growing child musical prodigy, rather than what is offered. The ending alone, does make the movie worth watching, and it was the only part that got me involved emotionally. I rate it four stars for the ending, the rest of it I would rate two stars. billAugust Rush
Beautiful Movie October 14, 2008 Wayne J. Anderson (Superstition Mountain, AZ) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
My brother was a child prodigy in music and this movie is less a fairly tale then you might believe. The acting is outstanding, the music is wonderful, and the story makes you feel great.
