3 out of 5 stars so many errata!   September 19, 2008

I was very excited when I got this book given how lovely the garments looked but when I started knitting I was very dissapointed. There are so many mistakes - in the instructions, the stitch counts and even in the measurements on the schematics. I lost confidence very quickly. I have made a few of the garments from the book and I'm pleased with them overall, but I had to ignore the patterns and do my own calculations. The patterns are simple enough that this was possible, but a very big inconvenience and spoiled my enjoyment of knitting from this book.

Also, as other reviewers have said, it's very difficult to get the suggested yarns in the UK, and I had big problems getting substitutes in worsted weight.

1 out of 5 stars Unmet expectations   July 14, 2008

I am severely disappointed by this book and think it is a waste of time and money.

I was expecting a workbook to allow me to create knits which fit perfectly. The section on "how to fit your knits" by calculating your fit is not only wrong in mathematical terms but also achieves the "perfect fit" by simply adding/ reducing rounds and stitches to the pattern, which everyone can work out without help anyway.

Additionally the patterns are boring - to call it fashion is an insult - and the yarn is too chunky as well as hard to get in the UK.

2 out of 5 stars Good designs in a badly designed book.   May 28, 2008

Despite the fact that I've knitted three of the Fitted Knits from Stefanie Japel's book, I can only give it two stars I'm afraid, and for the following reasons:

1.This is really just a collection of patterns. Absent are the expected illustrations, close-ups, tips, or explanations. There are some glossy photos of the models wearing the garments, but they weren't that helpful.
2.If you live in the UK and can't get hold of the advertised yarn, then you are heading for a headache, I'm afraid. I don't know how many tension squares I've knitted with yarns from the UK, but it's been a major frustration for me. I think it's both wrong and lazy to use specific yarns. Leave that to the pattern books, surely!
3.There is a section on `how to fit your knits'. It is unintelligible gibberish, confusing and badly written.
4.There are quite a lot of mistakes in the patterns. You'll need to go to Ms. Japel's website to check them before you embark on anything.
5.I've made the garments despite the book - with the help of the Ravelry community and other websites, blogs and authors. A big thank-you to them.

I expect more from a book, I suppose. I don't want a collection of patterns - I want a workbook. I want close-up photos and explanations. I want the author to recognise that I'll be knitting with the yarn of my choice - and not their sponsors' choice. I want to know how to fit the garment properly - not in general terms but in specific terms.

In summary, you have a lovely collection of designs but a lot of hurdles to overcome if you want to knit them.

3 out of 5 stars Has promise, needs translation   March 21, 2008

Being blessed with big boobs and a small waist, I am always on the look-out for kntting patterns that will actaully fit me, rather than having to be enormous all over and ending up looking like the Michelin man in colour. This book was very interesting, promising fitted knits that can be adapted, mostly with a knit in the round, top down contruction.

There area few drawbacks: This is an American book for the US market, and are designed with specific US brands of yarn in mind. You have to work out a suitable substitute by the tension (guage). Most of the projects use thick wool, what we Brits would call Aran or chunky, even for summery garments. I can't quite get my head around a T shirt with open lacework in a heavy weight chunky yarn. Presumably the author had speed of knitting, rather than actually wearing the thing in mind.

If you are not used to this top down method, even experienced knitters would find it difficult to adapt a pattern (taking away the lacey details used on almost all the raglan sleeves, for instance). You'd have to knit one exactly as is in the book, if only to learn how to adapt it. Having said that, there are some very interesting patterns, and if you are prepared to spend some time studying the technique, this is worth persuing.

4 out of 5 stars very interesting book   January 25, 2008

My book has just arrived and from the first glance it is a very exciting book. I have been looking through and it is full of really lovely top down sweaters, tops and cardigans. I can't wait to start one of them the problem is deciding which one as they are all so nice. I am looking forward to being able to make a sweater that flatters my larger, but still hourglass figure, instead of the shapeless baggy sweaters I get when I knit according to my bust measurements. There are, as the previous reviewer says, a couple of chunky (but still very attractive)shorty jackets in there but the majority of the designs are not knitted in too thick a yarn. I think the designs would appeal to all ages. I am in my early 60's and the friends I mostly knit for are in their early 30's and the book would cater for all of us design wise.
