Amazon.co.uk Review
This big, fat theatrical bomb has a lot going for it. There's the three leads, Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker, playing three resurrected witches who wreak havoc on Salem, Massachusetts, 300 hundred years after they were hung. There's music, special effects, and magic. There's a surprisingly horror-filled plot. Whoops, hold up on that last one. It's probably the extremes that this film goes to (displaying a Disney label), such as the witches sucking the life out of a little girl in the first five minutes, that put the brakes on any success for Hocus Pocus. Older children, however, in the 8 and up range should get a kick out of all the weird goings-on. It's a good measure of Halloween thrills and chills. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars It will put a spell on you   January 3, 2008
I was first introduced to this film as a child and have recently rediscovered it at age 23. I still love it. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are so hilarious as the evil Sanderson sisters and the musical numbers are fab. I agree there should be a soundtrack.

Definately one to watch, kids will love it, I put it on for my younger brother and he loved it. The only thing that creeped him out was the talking cat, think Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. This cat is Sarcastic, dry and ultmately hilarious.

Give it a go people. Bette Midler is ace.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for Halloween!   November 10, 2007

If your one of those people who wants to watch a film on Halloween but dosn't want it to be too scary? This is a great film for the whole family. Even though it is quite an old film, the special effects aren't half bad and there are some parts of it where you'll be laughing your head off. I would recommend this film to anybody.

4 out of 5 stars Pure entertainment   October 29, 2007
This is a great childrens movie and I have watched it every halloween that I can remember, I am 14 and am probably too old for this film, but the mere fact that i've watched it every year makes it tradition and it is good enough to still entertain me, and I even think that there are a few jokes that are too mature her for children to understand and that adults and teenagers might appreciate more.

The movie starts in the year 1693 and a teenager boy called Zachary Binx goes to the witches house to rescue his little sister from them, however they kill her, and turn him into a cat for the rest of eternity. The witches are then hanged for murder. The movie then skips ahead to the year 1993 and a teenager bringing his little sister out trick or treating, bumps into his crush and they go to the witches house and he lights the black flame candle and brings the witches back from the dead. The witches are well behind there times and do not understand modern halloween, which is very entertaining to watch, however they do have only one night to survive unless they kill a certain amount of children.

The acting is brilliant, and the three witches are hilarious and perfectly cast, there are some great scenes with them.

This isn't a masterpiece, but it is a movie that can be enjoyed by children and older adults alike as a bit of light entertainment around Halloween. You might be surprised by how good this movie really is.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Halloween Film   October 21, 2007

I'm completely aware that this is a kids' film and everything, but this is a film I've liked since my childhood, and even now at the age of 19, I enjoy watching this classic film.

It's a great film to watch on Halloween (Halloween daytime mind you. On Halloween night I prefer to watch real horrors), and it's also the perfect film for children to watch on Halloween, as it's a kid's horror. I remember watching this one on Halloween about ten years ago now, and to me at the time it gave a brilliant atmosphere.

It has a good cast of characters such as Bette Middler, Kathy Najimy and Sarah Jessica Parker as the Sanderson sisters.

The film begins in the year 1693, when a boy named Thackery Binks wakes up early one morning to find his younder sister Emily missing. He spots her heading towards the woods along with one of the Sanderson sisters Sarah (Sarah Jessica Parker). Thackery has a friend of his get help while he chases after Emily, where he is lead into the Sanderson sisters' cottage.

The Sanderson sisters are witches and have grown old. They've decided to decrease their age so they can be young again by making up a potion. The nasty part is that they need Emily (or any other child for that matter) to drink the potion so they can suck the life force out of her, thus killing her and returning themselves to young age (though they're still ugly. Especially Winifred with those teeth of hers).

Thackery attempts to stop them and save Emily, but fails completely. As punishment they transform him into a black cat and give him immortal life, so he can eternily suffer with the guilt of failing Emily.

The Sanderson sisters are then captured by the townspeople of Salem and the Sanderson sisters are hung. But before being hung however Winifred (Bette Middler) casts a spell. If a virgin lights the black flame candle on a Halloween night, then the Sanderson sisters will return.

The film skips ahead 300 years on Halloween in the year 1993, where the story is legendary. The part of Thackery is a mystery to the people of Salem, as they never found out what had become of him. It has also been rumoured that a black cat guards the Sanderson house every Halloween, making sure that nobody brings back the Sanderson sisters.

A boy named Max Dennisen who's just moved to Salem from Los Angeles and isn't at all happy about it finds the story perposterous and not in the least bit interesting. That evening he's forced to go trick or treating with his 8 year old sister Dani. That evening he runs into a girl he fancies named Allison. In an attempt to impress her, he decides the three of them can visit the Sanderson house. At the house Max (despite the warnings and assuming the story is a load of crap) lights the black flame candle, and is horrified when he finds the legend is true.

The Sanderson sisters return and are ready to continue what they started. They have that one evening to brew up another potion (the same they made 300 years earlier) and drain the life of a child.

Thackery has a lot of info about the witches and teams up with Max, Dani and Allison. The fate of Salem and the kids of that town rests with them. If they succeed in stopping them, the Sanderson sisters will be gone for good, but if they fail, then the Sanderson sisters will be back for more than just that evening. They'll be back for ever unless of course they are hunted by someone. The only problem is that no one they confide to with regard to the Sanderson sisters believes them and some take it as a Halloween joke. Great film.
