Amazon.co.uk Review Tamra Davis' IBest Men/I must have seemed a better idea on paper than it ends up being in practice, in spite of some snappy dialogue and good central performances. A group of male friends meet Jesse (Luke Wilson) out of prison to take him to his wedding to Hope (Drew Barrymore); along the way, their friend David pops into the bank for some money and turns out to be the Shakespeare-spouting bandit Hamlet. Suddenly all of them are his unwilling accessories in a hostage situation with David's sheriff father and murderous FBI men besieging them and a crowd cheering their every move. pEach of the young men has a trauma and it is not only David who gets a soliloquy: gay Green Beret Buzz (Dean Cain) has an extended period of bonding with one of the hostages, demented Vietnam vet Gonzo (Brad Dourif). The eventual action sequences are curiously perfunctory and uninteresting and the obsessive FBI man, Hoover, has little motivation. This is a likable film which goes nowhere, but has quite a lot of gentle charm along the way to its tragic ending.p BOn the DVD:/B the DVD is presented in a widescreen video aspect of 2.35:1 and has Dolby surround sound; the special features are a slightly self-congratulatory "making of" featurette and the film's theatrical trailer. --IRoz Kaveney/I

OK comedy-drama toplines excellent cast July 7, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
br /BEST MEN (1997)br /br /Aspect ratio: 2.35:1 br /[Filmed in Super 35]br /DVD soundtrack: Dolby 2.0 stereobr /Theatrical soundtrack: Dolby Digitalbr /br /Tamra Davis' OK comedy-drama toplines Sean Patrick Flanery (POWDER) as a Shakespeare-spouting bank robber whose latest heist goes spectacularly awry when a group of his closest friends (Dean Cain, Luke Wilson, Andy Dick and Mitchell Whitfield) stumble into the very same bank whilst on their way to Wilson's wedding, obliging them to join forces with Flanery and take staff and customers hostage as the building is besieged by trigger-happy cops. Raymond J. Barry is the hard-nosed FBI agent who takes charge of the situation from sheriff Fred Ward (playing Flanery's estranged father!), employing heavy-handed methods which ultimately threaten the lives of everyone in the immediate area.br /br /Narrative parallels with DOG DAY AFTERNOON are acknowledged in the dialogue (there's also a hint of THELMA LOUISE, and a significant dollop of BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID), but Davis and her scriptwriters (Art Edler Brown and Tracy Fraim) forego heavy drama for a light-hearted examination of friendship under duress, at least until the climactic showdown, when events take a slightly darker turn. Nicely played by an experienced cast, the movie takes time to establish a roster of likeable characters, particularly Cain as an ex-Green Beret whose dreams of a military career were shattered when the Army discharged him for being gay, and Brad Dourif as one of the hostages, a fiercely loyal Vietnam vet whose own Army service ended when he dared to question his superiors' ethics. Drew Barrymore gets lost in the mix as Wilson's bride-to-be, left standing at the altar following his involvement in the heist, but Flanery excels as the benevolent bank robber who steals from the rich and distributes his gains amongst local orphanages; his recitals from 'Hamlet' are a highlight of the picture.br /
GREAT February 26, 2002 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is a somewhat "mellow" action movie which features a mixture of comedy, drama and action. If you're after action such as Mission Impossible then you will be disappointed, but it is a nice easy movie which will make you laugh and be mesmerised...by the action and the cute cast (lovely Drew for the guys and Dean Cain for the girls).brIt is based on the theme of friendship and to what extent friends go to help each other. It is touching and sentimental with each character wrapped up in their own internal struggle (e.g. homosexuality, relationships with fathers, marriage). Each theme is explored on a light hearted basis with little depth, but still meaningful to an audience of all ages.brIt's great because it's taken from a women's perspective (hence a female director) therefore the guys are portrayed just how girls want to see guys - i.e what they think is hot. brBuy it today...or rent it...whatever, but just see it!
Potential, but lost in poor plot and direction December 8, 2000 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Well, I was really expecting something from this film after reading the reviews and noting the cast. However, it never really gets going and its not funny, serious or emotional, it was a struggle to watch it to the end.
  Best men=Best movie+Best storyline+Best actors October 31, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This movie really deserves way over 5 stars. It's got the best set of Characters in it (especially Buzz Billy) solving out their problems but in a bank. it doesn't have much comedy in it (when Teddy goes it gets a tiny bit boring) but i still love it! i strongly recommend people buy this it's worth the money but i also recommend people also had experience with shakespears hamlet (some parts are hard to follow)
A fantastic film packed with action, comedy and friendships April 10, 2000 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
On the surface, this is a film about a bank robbery (with some of the action that goes along with this type of storyline), but the funny one-liners and exploration of deeper themes (such as homosexuality, real friendship, and love) mean that there is something for everyone. There is also eye-candy in the form of the lovely Drew Barrymore for the guys, and Dean Cain clad only in a pair of tight briefs for the gals! In short, something for everyone.
