Amazon.co.uk Review As a depiction of the computer-hacker underground, iHackers/i is bogus to the bone. As a thriller, it's cartoonish and conventional. The premise (computer-happy kids hack into the wrong system, and the Forces of Repression come after them) is recycled from John Badham's 1983 IWar Games/I. And the corporate-creep bad guy, played by Fisher Stevens, steeples his fingers and growls mossy villainous cliches. ("By the time they realise the truth, we'll be long gone with all the money.") For all its postmodern trappings the movie is working with sub-prehistoric storytelling tools. But it does succeed on one level, as a movie about adolescent bonding and alienation. The director, Iain Softley, helmed the Beatles-in-Hamburg biopic IBackbeat/I, and he seems to have an instinct for the emotions that pull kids together around common interests and the insecurities that drive them apart. The familiar crises of loyalty and betrayal have an ache of real loneliness. It doesn't hurt that the two stars, Jonny Lee Miller (Sick Boy Williamson in ITrainspotting/I) and Angelina Jolie (IGirl, Interrupted/I), are just about equally gorgeous and charismatic; their longing glances steam up the screen. --IDavid Chute, Amazon.com/I

Hacker fairy tale and costumier's delight November 2, 2007 There's a Little Red Riding-hood, a Big Bad Wolf, and a host of other hacker characters offering an eye fest of couture - they're all clothed by Jean Paul Gaultier - and who off-screen must have been frantically slipping in and out of this wonderful gear. Iain Softley has woven sound into image in a beautiful way, some of the best in the movies I guess, and though the dialogue itself doesn't rate as literature it's as expressive as the music and other noises in its own way. The hacker cast is great - all of them - and I've watched this film time and again, fast-forwarding on only three short scenes. If only the troubles of growing up were as good as this for all of us! Innocence - well almost - meets wicked world in unlikely story. A fairy tale, but I won't say if it's a happy ending or Grimm
A true classic and must-see February 17, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Their only crime was curiositypProbably THE best film from the 90s. I've lost count of the number of times I've watched this since I got the DVD (if I don't watch it every couple of weeks there's something seriously wrong grin. A great cast - Jonny Lee Miller(who plays Dade perfectly), the unique 'Cereal Killer' (Matthew Lillard) and Angelina Jolie(to name but a few)pMade in 1995, this is a classic with some seriously great one-liners. It's a seriously under-rated film which has a teen feel-good factor, and you don't even have to be a geek to approciate it (though it helps ;-) )
Computers on the TV March 23, 2005 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
For me at least this is the original computer movie, a few have followed and a few came before, but this is the defining movie.pThe graphics that represent what is going on in the computers and the way that the Hackers manoeuvres are visually depicted as they move from one file to another are laughable. It takes a different tack from that of the matrix that expected the watcher to believe the operators could see pictures within rapidly streaming lines of code. Instead they create vivid 3D pictures and try and represent data flowing through a computer and processor.pIt certainly makes the inside of my computer far more interesting.pA child prodigy, the 11 year old kid who manages to crash more computers in a single sitting than anyone has ever managed is banned from using computers until his 18 birthday - at that point he begins his antics once again, never hurting anyone but most certainly enjoying himself. Using the net to gain revenge on those who mock him, in the process trying to woo Angelina Jolie, a rather young looking Angelina in fact that bears a striking resemblance to a Vulcan.pThey pit their wits against a corrupt computer engineer at a massive company who run a super computer. The film follows the authorities who try and chase them down, framing them for every little computer niggle that can be identified, yet they persist and run the battle right to the end.pThe ending is actually a little too feel good and mushy for the tone of the film all the way through and is almost an after thought, it is certainly true that enough has gone before that the ending is insignificant.pI don't think you have to love computers to watch this, but you cant be a technophobe, for those people this would be like a nightmare, convincing you of certain doom the minute you use a computer. In fact it almost serves to demystify the world of computers, making them somewhat softer and less intimidating to the average person. it shows that not all is bad on the outside of the authorities.pIts quite a feel good film for the little man, worth a try.
!--My Favourite Movie--! March 14, 2004 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
Hackers is my favourite movie of all time!br -Their only crime was curiosity- brIt is impossible to find a movie nowdays as good as those from the 90's. If you miss those movies u used to see growing up, well this one is a classic!!! I've been watching this movie since I was 8, and Im 15 now, but I still luv it!!!brWith an amazing cast featuring -Jonny Lee Miller(one of the best actors ever)br -Matthew Lillard(where are these people hiding) br-Angelina Jolie(yes u do see her topless)br -Jesse Bradford(when he was cool)brAND MANY MORE-(all who R severly underated)br brMade in 1995, this is one of those classics without explosions everytime a car crashes - or police shooting everyone they see - this movie is pure realism - and tha best thing about it is its set around teens in NEW YORK!!! - the cool NEW York - not the rich part - NEW YORK in tha 90s!!!pPLOT--A young boy is arrested by the Secret Service for writing a virus, and banned from using a computer until his 18th birthday. 7 Years later, he is 18 and moves to NEW YORK! He and his new-found friends(all HACKERS) discover a plot to unleash a dangerous computer virus which they are being blamed for, but must use their computer skills to find the evidence while being pursued by the Secret Service and the evil computer genius(who is a HACKER himself) behind the virus.pYOU HAVE TO OWN THIS!!!
Hack the planet! February 5, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Hackers is a thrilling, vibrant journey into the world of cyber-culture and the computer hacker. Dade Murphy (Johnny Lee Miller) is a shy, socially inept computer whizz-kid who moves to New York with his mother, and soon mixes up with the ballsy Kate Libby (a young Angelina Jolie) and a gang of elite hackers (including Matthew Liliard) in a major electronic heist. These group of characters are the heart and soul of the movie, and it's hard not to enjoy their exploits as they take you through a subculture that has barely been touched by other mainstream movies - some people don't know it even exists. If you're one of those, you're in for a shock.pDirector Ian Softley handles preceedings well, and even blurs the line between fantasy and reality by showing how the hackers see the world as a labyrinth of computer connections. The film has a harsh sense of humour too, and demonstrates just how powerful a computer hacker can be. The film also boasts a terrific soundtrack, featuring the best of Underworld, The Prodigy and Leftfield among others.pAlthough the dialogue and plot can be dodgy in some moments, Hackers is definitely an original and well-crafted movie adventure.
