Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
A lone woman, armed only with indomitable sass and her native wit, goes up against the corporate big boys and beats the bejesus out of them. As a story line it's hardly new, but Steven Soderbergh's film keeps it exhilaratingly fresh and lively--thanks not least to his lead actress. Seizing the role of the smart, mouthy, aggressively working-class Erin Brockovich with both hands, Julia Roberts gives it everything she's got and then some. She's well matched by Albert Finney as her grouchy but good-hearted boss and Aaron Eckhart as a sympathetic biker. The story's based--by all accounts fairly closely--on actual events, when the real Erin (who appears briefly in the film as a kindly waitress) brought a massive lawsuit against utilities giant Pacific Gas and Electric for spreading toxic pollution. Rather than confine the action to courtroom shenanigans, Soderbergh takes us out under Southern California's pitiless skies and along the dirt-poor roads where most of PGE's blue-collar victims live, letting us feel the ground-down exhaustion of their lives. But though it's rooted in reality, the film's anything but solemn. The script's sharp and funny, full of unexpected twists; and Roberts, flaunting herself outrageously in an eye-popping array of push-up bras and micro-miniskirts, has never been better. --IPhilip Kemp/I

3 out of 5 stars Interesting film and lessons to be learned   November 18, 2008
Based on a real life story, it focuses on a young, sexy mother who is out of luck. She fails to get justice in her life and with mounting debts is desperately trying to get a job. She ends up working for the lawyer who failed to represent her (actually she forces him to give her a job, as she feels he owes her). From her first day onwards, she is met with much jealousy and resilience from the other female employees (because she is so foxy and dresses to accentuate that). However, she always emphasises during the film she is very honest and very hard working (obviously!, since she is white Caucasian and of Polish heritage).br /br /Anyhoo, she is working on a case where a local resident is claiming a water company plant has been making them ill. She does some undercover work and discovers the company is using chromium 6 in the manufacture process which is seeping through the water table and making people very ill. She manages to find over 600 claimants and in the end they win the lawsuit and the company has to cough up $333 million. She then finds a purpose in life (and respect) and also gets filthy rich (her cut for services rendered is $2 million). It just goes to show, if you are white caucasian, living in a western country, you will always get justice. Just look at the Union Carbide company and the 'accidental leak' from their plant in Bhopal (India) back in 1987. Now 21 years on, they have refused to pay a single cent to the 1 million plus Indians who were either killed or severely maimed by their noxious products. The actual compensation is $1 billion and the imperialist americans refuse to pay a single cent. They have gotten away with mass murder. Just goes to show, if you are brown and not a christian, it is virtually impossible to get justice from a guilty (white caucasian) party. I also know this from personal experience.br /

5 out of 5 stars Julia Robers fits in Erin's role as if she were the real life Erin   December 19, 2007

Why can't we get more films like this, a strong story, based on actual events, excellent performances and dialogue which sounds like it is based on how real people talk to each other?br /br /I don't know how accurate this particular story about corporate deceit and environmental pollution is but, given the track record of big corporations, it should be a rich vein for film makers to mine. 'Erin Brockovich' is very good, a shocking story of land pollution and resultant death and disease in a community. A story, however, which would not have been told were it not for the efforts of one woman to get behind the obfuscation and at the truth. It's a juicy role and Julia Roberts grabs it for all she is worth, she is superb, full of anger and determination to use the opportunity to make something of her life. This is the strength of her performance, she convinces in showing us a woman in challenging circumstances, on her own with no job and kids to feed who is actually a bold and intelligent woman rather than a victim. There is a real hunger about how she works her socks off to put the case together while trying to balance her other responsibilities.br /br /There are good performances all round and some of the dialogue really crackles, seeing some corporate lawyers put in their place is particularly satisfying. A film well worth seeing and one that is more subtle than it might at first appear.

5 out of 5 stars Hugely Satisfying and Encouraging   July 30, 2007

This satisying, gleeful film contains some of Julia Roberts' finest acting to date, as she sweet-talks her way into a job working with Lawyer Ed Masry, played by Albert Finney, then unearths a catalogue of sickening corruption carried out by a water board, PGE. br /br /With a truly captivating amount of guts, strength, resolve and charisma, Erin Brockovitch and Ed Masry systematically unearth chemical poisoning of people's water in the small town of Hinckley, taking on plaintiff after plaintiff in what was to become the biggest lawsuit in American history. Julia Roberts positively shines, doing this inspiring role incredible justice, and the real-life feminist icon Erin even makes a brief cameo herself, as a waitress.br /br /Erin's relationships with the various plaintiffs, who have had their lives torn apart by greedy and corrupt businessmen, are incredibly moving and poignant, and this film is frequently emotional. It is also profoundly satisying and gleeful, since that particular big business get exactly what they deserve: made to compensate every single family who has suffered at their hands, not to mention a whole load of negative publicity. Serves them right!br /br /If only this kind of retribution happened more often, and more big businesses were hauled over the coals for their disgusting exploitation and corruption!

5 out of 5 stars A satisfying film   November 30, 2004

Erin Brockovich is a tale of a woman struggling with circumstances difficult enough to make the viewer wonder how she might get out of them, and it is good to see how she manages (with the help of othet people) to deal with the obstacles and enable truth and justice to prevail as well. The fact that this is a true story about a real human, not a saint, makes it all the more satisfying. The DVD contains an interesting short featurette with the real Erin Brockovich and the lawyer she worked with.brHighly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Julia shines as Erin   March 17, 2004

This is an amazing story about an amazing woman.pJulia Roberts really proves she's one of the best actresses around in this film, displaying real, pure talent - Albert Finney also puts in a memorable performance and together they totally bust PGE!pTo be honest, i wouldn't usually pick this kind of a film ... true stories tend to be over the top and sentimental ... but Erin Brockovich is gritty, realistic drama. In short, it's fantastic!
