5 out of 5 stars The Funniest Film Ever Made   August 26, 2008

I cant reccommend Red Dawn enough.Easily the most laughable film ever made.Shocking propaganda and hilariously cheesey and wooden performances from all invovled.Frighting that it was ever supposed to be taken seriously.Patricks "tormented" Lawerance of Arabia leader type character is worth the asking price alone. The film is constant throughout with each scene just as absurd and humourous as the preceeding one.A true classic, fun for all the family.10/10

2 out of 5 stars Kick The Tyres And Light The..... Mickey Mouse Clubhouse?   August 26, 2007

Ah, the extreme possibilites Hollywood throw our way from time-to-time, merely in order to identify with certain "age groups" (who just so happen to be a large demographic when it comes to cinema business, natch). One of the most popular is to throw adolescents / pubescents into adult situations, situations that would fry their synapses and rob them of limb co-ordination if they'd actually encounter them in real life. N-n-n-n-nineteen? The average age of the Hollywood Hero is about 8, apparently. br /br /And like many other "adults" who grapple with the everyday armageddon of death-and-taxes (and dropsy), such scenarios can be utterly tiresome. "Red Dawn" is a case in point - High school seniors / freshmen fighting off the blood-splattered ferocity of the Red Army and it's Central American allies? Maybe I'm alone here, but I wouldn't sleep soundly in my bed if I knew that the Security of the "First World" was in the hands of a acne-scarred Patrick Swayze. And guess what? The invading forces actually fear them! c'mon Comrade, nothing a little napalm and Actor's Studio time can't fix..... "WarGames" was partially plausible since children take to computing like Mother's Milk, and it's something they could accomplish in their Ali-Larter festooned bedrooms. They don't tend to wander into Fort Brag and practice with RPGs much.br /br /The new 2-disc special-edition of this film (Region 1, naturally) is a far better proposition than this - it even has a "Carnage Counter" that tallies up the huge body count. This DVD is bare bones, ancient, and poor in picture. Still, for such a small fee one can't really complain. Bl**dy kids....

4 out of 5 stars Impossible, but a healthy role reversal   July 13, 2007

Of course, the events portrayed in "Red Dawn" could never have taken place. The US armed forces would never have allowed such an invasion to get a toehold, let alone to be completed - the lessons of Normandy, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa were too fresh in the memory. Besides, no foreign nation could have defeated the US forces on their own ground.br /br /That said, the movie constitutes a marvellous mental exercise in seeing things from the other guy's point of view. Scan through the reviews here, and count the references to dealing with the invader the American way - with hot lead, cold steel, etc. Then turn the picture upside down, and imagine the invaders are Americans and British, and the Wolverines are Iraqi or Afghan "insurgents". If you do it quickly enough, you will probably get some invaluable cognitive dissonance, as your ideas are shaken up. Then, perhaps, you will realize that Americans don't have a monopoly on hating and resisting invaders. Everyone feels exactly the same.br /br /As an action movie, "Red Dawn" scores high. Apart from the implausibility of the whole scenario, the plot is reasonably credible and consistent. Like "The Patriot" and "Braveheart", it stirs the blood with exciting combat sequences. Strongly recommended for all but military nitpickers.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than one could think   June 7, 2007

I confess that I always liked this movie, although I am aware that it is not a major (or even a major minor) one. But a story about USA under communist occupation is something you do not see every day - and it is not so badly made. The fighting scenes are more credible than not, decors are well chosen (Rocky Mountains) and the story is really not so silly at all. The fight with the MI-24 helicopters in itself is worth the price of the DVD location. In fact, this movie can surprise you, so if you feel like a little cinematographic curiosity with your popcorn - go get it. And after that you can always start a conversation with "Well, I just saw a great movie with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey" and when you get the answer "Sure, the Dirty dancing", you can answer smugly "Not at all"! That is worth a couple of bucks!

5 out of 5 stars Essential Viewing   May 17, 2006

It is important to remember that one Soviet Premier prophesied: we won't have to fire a shot when we take over the west - it will simply implode.br /br /Forget the plot line, forget the acting - this is a movie about the survival of freedom.br /br /How many West Berliners died trying to escape to East Berlin? br /br /The only sophisticated people who don't loathe all that Communism stood for are Western leftists who benefit from the capitalism they detest.br /br /It is difficult for post cold-war people to appreciate the world-wide threat communism posed in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. br /br /This movie is a fun if trite reminder that communism, leftism, socialism, and all other forms of political/beaurocratic control and dictatorship are evil.br /br /Long live freedom!
