Amazon.co.uk Review
The quintessential movie spoof that spawned an entire genre of parody films, the original IAirplane!/I still holds up as one of the brightest comedic gems of the 1980s, not to mention of cinema itself (it often tops polls of the funniest movies ever made). The humour may be low and obvious at times, but the jokes keep coming at a rapid-fire clip and its targets--primarily the lesser lights of 1970s cinema, from disco films to star-studded disaster epics--are more than worthy for send-up. If you've seen even one of the overblown IAirport/I movies then you know the plot: the crew of a filled-to-capacity jetliner is wiped out and it's up to a plucky stewardess and a shell-shocked fighter pilot to land the plane. Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty are the heroes who have a history that includes a meet-cute a la ISaturday Night Fever/I, a surf scene right out of IFrom Here to Eternity/I, a Peace Corps trip to Africa to teach the natives the benefits of Tupperware and basketball, a war-ravaged recovery room with a G.I. who thinks he's Ethel Merman (a hilarious cameo)--and those are just the flashbacks! The jokes gleefully skirt the boundaries of bad taste (pilot Peter Graves to a juvenile cockpit visitor: "Joey, have you ever seen a grown man naked?"), with the high (low?) point being Hagerty's intimate involvement with the blow-up automatic pilot doll, but they'll have you rolling on the floor. The film launched the careers of collaborators Jim Abrahams (IBig Business/I), David Zucker (IRuthless People/I) and Jerry Zucker (IGhost/I), as well as revitalising such B-movie actors as Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, Robert Stack and Leslie Nielsen, who built a second career on films like this. A vital part of any home film collection. --IMark Englehart, Amazon.com/I

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Film Ever   September 3, 2008
Airplane is the funniest film I have ever seen. The plot is simple, an ex fighter pilot Ted, goes to the airport to persuade his ex girlfriend Elaine to get back with him. When she says no, Ted buys a ticket (smoking or non smoking!) and boards the plane, the flight crew then succumb to food poisoning and then its up to Ted with Elaine's help, to land the plane! The jokes come thick and fast and are genuinly funny. The only complaint is that this DVD has no extras but the film is side-splittingly funny, buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars And stop calling me Shirley....   April 15, 2008
One of my favourites - ridiculously funny, and one of those films that is packed with little subtle quirks, and you notice something different each time you watch it. An excellent cameo from basketball player Kareem Abdul-Jabaar who just happens to be the co-pilot!br /br /

2 out of 5 stars not like i expected   March 15, 2008

i was disappointed by this film. It didnt make me laugh nearly so much as i had been led to believe, the one person i did think would be funny (Leslie Nielson)was only mildly dry, adding the annoying stewardess with the weak voice and quivering mouth and you had a mediocre film.

5 out of 5 stars One of the funniest films ever made   April 18, 2007
Airplane is a brilliantly funny film that sends up everything from disaster movies to Saturday Night Fever. The film basically sees an airliner suffer from a serious bout of food poisoning that incapacitates the pilots and the only one who can land the plane is a war veteran with a fear of flying. One of the funniest things about the film is that a lot of the lines are taken wholesale from a serious disaster movie but with the situation changed or a couple of lines tacked on. Another thing I like about the film is that much of the best comedy is in the background and is something you have to look for. Airplane is definitely, in my view, one of the best comedies ever made.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny   March 25, 2007

This brilliant comedy is the best film the Abrahams/Zucker team ever made. Largely a parody of the many Airport movies made in the 1970's it remains relentlessly funny, with the jokes occurring in a seemingly endless stream.br /br /The casting is perfect: Lloyd Bridges, Robert Hays, Julie Haggerty and Leslie Neilsen were made for the roles they play here. Best of all is Peter Graves as Captain Oveur, in a role they might have trouble getting made these days! There are so many great moments in this film but the complete confusion in the cockpit remains a favourite of mine:br /br /Victor Basta: Request vector, over. br /Captain Oveur: What? br /Tower voice: Flight 2-0-9'er cleared for vector 324. br /Roger Murdock: We have clearance, Clarence. br /Captain Oveur: Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor? br /br /The DVD includes some fascinating extras, including interviews with the cast and director, which you can watch as you watch the movie as they are played in sequence (i.e. the movie cuts away and then restarts after the interview).br /br /So its a great film, with great extras. What more could you ask for!
