Amazon.co.uk Review
IAbsolutely Fabulous/I was first broadcast in 1992 and became an instant hit. Originally a sketch on the IFrench and Saunders Show/I, Jennifer Saunders saw its potential and created one of the most ground-breaking and debauched comedies on British TV. Centred around the hip London fashion scene the series follows Edina (Saunders) and Patsy (Joanna Lumley), two women who refuse to grow up and are constantly on a mission to lose weight, gorging themselves with cocaine and/or champagne, endlessly throwing parties (or throwing up at parties), and sporting outrageous outfits which were the height of fashion at the time--honestly sweetie! The superb comic performances offered star status to Julia Sawalha as Edina's straight-laced daughter and Jane Horrocks as the sublimely dippy Bubble, and re-invented the careers of Joanna Lumley and June Whitfield. Saunders meanwhile secured her status as one of the top female comedians Britain has ever produced. Although its consciously chic clothing looks a little dated now, its mad characterisations endure and the jokes remain as hilariously slick and apt as ever. p IAb Fab/I remains a landmark in TV since it was the first time that female comedians and writers had had the freedom and exposure to satirise problems close to their own heart, from their own perspective. With Feminist writers claiming that the ideals of feminism were dead in the 1990s and that female concerns were moving in the wrong direction--towards the "Laddette Culture"--and reports claiming that careers were taking a central role, forcing motherhood onto the back-burner, the series sought to embody and satirise these new supposedly "female" characteristics. As the show continued to grow in popularity both in Britain and the States, plans were made to transfer the formula to America. However, as with many other great British series, the content was considered too risky for American audiences due to the amount of sex and drug references. Thus domestic audiences breathed a sigh of release that their beloved IAb Fab/I would forever stay British to the core. --INikki Disney/I

4 out of 5 stars Funny and i love sitcoms   November 7, 2007
Forget comedy movies if you want a laugh watch sitcoms instead. When watching a comedy movie what do you always get? violence?, screams?, sarcasim?, nagging, fights? yes thats what we always get but with sitcoms we seem to get a whole lot more. br /br /With sitcoms its like a treat, we get guest stars, at least one character we can relate to, moments that will be stuck in your head forever and an awesome theme tune. br /br /br /Absolutely Fabulous is the right title for this show, it has a good theme tune, the characters are all hilarious but its a shame i cannot relate to any of the characters but the show does not seem to fail to entertain me. br /br /When i watch a comedy movie i never laugh i only ever say "awe" and "haha" but with sitcoms they seem to crack me up in hard laughter br /Absolutely Fabulous cracks me up in hard laughter, its just so funny and entertaining where a movie is like blah. br /br /Comedies are best left for television, sitcoms seem to be more creative with characters and storylines Absolutely Fabulous is one of those shows it seems to have it all. This show has style, fashion, little bad language, hilarious moments you will never forget, a laugh track that is br /believable unlike most sitcoms, this show is funny however like every show after a while it tends to go flat, the style and fashion seems to loose it once its past its 5th season and the storylines seem to get weak also the characters look like they get fed up with the show and they make it clear aswell. br /br /Absolutely Fabulous is best leaving now while its givin a good name. Series 1-4 are the best however series 5 seems to fail on all kinds of levels. br /br /Great show, lots of laughs, will make you feel better after viewing. 4 out of 5 stars. br /br /

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fabulous Is The Best!!!!   September 27, 2007
I bought this DVD when it was my birthday because I'm a really big fan of Ab Fab. When I first watched it, it made me laugh so much. It's one of my favourite British comedies of all time. My favourite episodes are Iso Tank (proper classic), Birthday, Fashion France. The special features are very good especially The French Saunders sketch which is so hilarious. Can't wait to get Series 2.

3 out of 5 stars The show hadn't matured enough for this season to work!   May 25, 2004

I love Absolutely Fabulous and personally I can understand why out of only a few British shows it's doing fantastically well in America!pThe first season introduces you to Edina Monsoon and Patsy Stone. Two middle aged friends who just won't accept anything less than fabulous. They'll stay out drinking till dawn and flirt with any young man they can find. Sadly Edina has a daughter named Saffy at home who won't accept her mother's partying ways which ends up with Edina acting like the teenager and Saffy being the mother. Along with them is Edina's crazy assitant Bubbles and Edina's sometimes crazed mother.pThe first season has 6 great episodes but personally I think the show started out funny but didn't take it over the top like the following seasons which doesn't work. There are times when you'll just laugh and laugh but when you watch season 2,3,4 and 5 you'll look back and think "Yeah that was a good one. Anyway put the next season on!" pAll in all a must have if you're a fabulous fan because this is the DVD where it all started but if you really want to roll around laughing get series 3 or 5!

5 out of 5 stars The name says it all   November 11, 2001

Jennifer Saunders is an genius. I always thought so when watching French and Saunders (which I hope is coming out on DVD at some point!!), but this series verifies it. I can't begin to explain how funny it is, you just have to see it yourself. If you only ever see one episode, let it be 'France', which is absolutely the best one ever written. There are some funny out takes on the DVD, and the rest is pretty much standard, but who cares, it's such a great comedy programme, that you can forgive the DVD anything. Buy it now. What more can I say?!

The original the best! This DVD will have you rolling around on the floor with laughter, especially Iso Tank and Birthday. Can't wait for more to be available on DVD.
