Amazon.co.uk Review
IJoseph King of Dreams/I is a direct-to-video sequel advertised as "from the makers of IThe Prince of Egypt/I", a labelling that might inspire trepidation in the viewer. Happily, the makers of IJoseph/I leave Moses alone and tell the tale of another Bible star, Joseph, known for his coat of many colours and a fantastic destiny. Joseph (voiced by Ben Affleck), his father's favourite son, is sold into slavery by his jealous half-brothers. After years of struggle, Joseph rises to be the Pharaoh's trusted adviser when his gift for interpreting dreams pays dividends. The 78-minute feature is rich in colour and features several strong songs ("Better Than I" is the standout) written by newcomer John Bucchino. The film's religious elements are secondary, yet its heart is in the right spot--a most agreeable stance for a wider audience. IPrince/I was designed as an "event" movie and suffered in the hype and marketing. With lower aims, IJoseph/I is a more satisfying film and even invites the unexpected: we're ready for the next "sequel". --IDoug Thomas, Amazon.com/I

1 out of 5 stars second rate failure   November 23, 2007

Everyone knows the story of Joseph, this isn't a very good version though, I prefer the LW one I saw as a child. it tries to be too clever and modern with modern art representations to convey deep meaning (which fails). It's Joseph for Americans actually, "stars" Ben Afflek, is that any kind of credentials? hailed triumphantly whilst being borderline offensive and stereotypical. Songs not quite memorable and often irritatingly overly ostentatious and showy and yes the animation does look like the third in a series of films as opposed to the first or one on a limited straight to dvd release.br /br /Not a parr on Prince of Egypt by the same people.br /br /Would do for a basic religious angle and that's seemingly what people appreciate but confuse it with a good film, not really one to hunt out.br /br /br /

4 out of 5 stars Superb, an animation classic.   January 4, 2001

What it's about: Joseph: King of Dreams is an inspiring animated story, beautifully illustrated with colorful characters and an exceptional musical score. Robert Ramirez and Rob La Duca have directed this classic, biblically based story with Ben Affleck as the voice of Joseph, and Jodi Benson, Mark Hamil, Judith Light and James Eskhouse voicing key characters. The story begins with Jacob and Rachel discovering they were going to have a miracle child, reveals how his brothers resented him, carries on through his slavery and work for Pharaoh and ends with the joyous family reunion. pThe good: Bravo to Dreamworks for an entertaining, beautifully animated story about one of the Bible's favorite characters! A few privileges have been taken with the script, but these are additions that improve the story and sort of fill in the blanks. Giving Joseph a love interest from Potiphar's household whom he eventually marries when he is under Pharaoh completes the picture of Joseph as a husband and father when his brothers find him. Adding a scene that shows Potiphar sparing Joseph's life because his wife asks him to, confirms that Potiphar realized his wife was lying and that he knew Joseph was really innocent. These situations don't change the story, but instead makes sense for children who are trying to figure out what happens in those scenes. The dreams are illustrated like Van Gogh paintings, 3-D camera angles surround characters to create a more realistic shot. A half dozen songs are skillfully used to bridge plot situations, explain a character's action, illustrate time lapses and celebrate events. The painful situations of his brothers selling him into slavery, Potiphar's wife betraying him and the joyful reunion with his family are handled in a tender way that children will understand and learn from. This is a visual treat that can be shown to Sunday school classes, neighborhood kids, schools and anyone else who wants to see an inspiring story with a life changing message. It will create great discussion about forgiveness, God's plan for our lives and trusting God when things look hopeless. Adults, don't let the fact that it's animated fool you -- I enjoyed every minute of this colorful, inspiring story! pThe not-so-good: Just being picky, but the animation -- despite the fact that it's colorful -- could have been a little more realistic. There are a couple of scenes where the brothers take off their shirts and go swimming, and girls in pretty costumes dance for the men in the palace, but all of it's very tame and nothing is offensive. pParental advisory: Parents might want to watch this with your little ones under 7 because of the inevitable questions concerning the adult themes (betrayal, forgiveness, attacking a woman, etc.) that may need explanation.
