5 out of 5 stars tears for the past and hope for the future   February 22, 2007
3 out of 7 found this review helpful

It is a sad fact of our lives as lesbians that at some time or another the vast majority of us will have had to deal with discrimination, based solely on our sexual orientation. A sadder fact is that many of us do lose the understanding or support of family, when we identify as gay or lesbian. By simply being honest about who we are we stand to isolate ourselves from the people we have known and loved longest in our lives. That is why the wider lesbian community can become so important, as a surrogate family and support system. Our shared history gives us a common understanding and we have all learned, against a backdrop of misconception, the value of understanding.br /br /History has brought us a long way. Generations of women prepared to stand up for who they were, despite the consequences, br /have helped shape the more tolerable world that most of us live in today. br /br /If these walls could talk 2 will likely make you cry, it will undoubtedly make you remember, but mostly it will give you hope; br /through what has been, to what is, to what will be ~ a brighter future for us all.br /

5 out of 5 stars Simply Fantastic   March 9, 2006

I watched this film recently during which I cried at the beginning out of the deep loss that Redgrave portrayed in her performance and it touched me deeply.pDuring the 3 movies, these short films tell the story of just how far society has come in the acceptance of lesbianism and it really is a truly wonderful feeilng that this has come about in a positive manner.pI also cried at the end - not out of the aforementioned grief performance, however, out of the sheer happiness, love, respect and fun that Ellen DeGeneres Sharon Stone played in their parts. They were funny, witty and truly in love and at the end of the day - is that not what we all look for? It really did bring happy tears to my eyes!pI thoroughly recommend this film - well worth the money!

5 out of 5 stars Poignant and sensitive - a 'must see'   February 26, 2006

The 3 stories included in this film are accurate, aptly treated and are a credible representation of lesbianism in both the social and emotional contexts.pThe acting is terrific. Vanessa Redgrave gives a peerless rendition of grief and loss, and the intimacy and wit with which Ellen D and Sharon Stone play is warm and engaging.pThis piece keeps the right side of sentimentality throughout and is an excellent history lesson as well as a hopeful snapshot of today. See it!

5 out of 5 stars Sad but used to be true   February 16, 2006

I thought this was a very moving film with so much truth in it. I am only glad that we now look back at this film to "how it use to be" I wish all the couples who are now able to tie the knot the very best. great movie !

3 out of 5 stars Diminishing Returns   January 6, 2006

As a man (boo!) lesbianism interests and excites, or used to, because it reveals a love I can never know. Nevertheless, I can recognise passion and truth when it comes my way. The first of these three films, though it was set in the most repressed of the three time periods, was by a mile the most powerful and emotional. Vanessa Redgrave's grief over her lost love is understated, intense and heart-rending. Compared to this, the other two stories gradually slide into vaccuous self-indulgence. The second film borders on insight, but comes up a touch short; the third, with Sharon Stone and Ellen Degeneres, is slight and easily forgotten. Would have been cleverer with some kind of link - perhaps the girl in the first story reappearing in the second or third - she might even have done so, but the third story never held me to the end.
