Amazon.co.uk Review
Matthew Broderick makes up for years of wet-noodle performances with his low-key but unsparing characterisation of Jim McAllister, a high-school teacher at George Washington Carver High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Driven by a strange mixture of loathing and lust for pathologically overachieving student Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), McAllister encourages a dim but popular athlete, Paul (Chris Klein from IAmerican Pie/I), to run against her in the election for student-council president. Director/co-writer Alexander Payne (ICitizen Ruth/I) turns this deceptively simple premise into a complex and scathing comedy of ambition, corruption and desire, all at its most naked and petty. Every scene contains some painfully funny nuance that will make you wince in a mixture of astonishment and empathy. Witherspoon flips effortlessly back and forth from adolescent vulnerability to steely-eyed strength; she is becoming a contemporary Carole Lombard. The movie itself feels like a magnificent throwback to the richly layered comedies of the 1930s, which drew their humour from sharply drawn characters and twisting plots instead of explosions of bodily fluids. With a wealth of smart, cutting details, IElection/I rewards multiple viewing. --IBret Fetzer/I

5 out of 5 stars "Dear Lord Jesus, I really must insist that you help me win the election tomorrow"   April 1, 2008
"Dear Lord Jesus," prays Tracy Flick the night before the election for student body president, "I do not often speak with you and ask for things, but now, I really must insist that you help me win the election tomorrow because I deserve it and Paul Metzler doesn't, as you well know. I realize that it was your divine hand that disqualified Tammy Metzler and now I'm asking that you go that one last mile and make sure to put me in office where I belong so that I may carry out your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen." br /br /Tracy (Reese Witherspoon) is an overachieving senior in suburban George Washington Carver High School (where the student body is all white). What Tracy wants, she gets, using a combination of single-minded hard work, bright smiles as phony as a television infomercial, eager volunteering and a ruthlessness that varies between chirpiness and squinted eyes. As Tracy says, quoting her Mom, "The weak are always trying to sabotage the strong." br /br /Then one of Tracy's teachers, Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), decides the world needs to be saved from Tracy. He talks one of the school's popular football athletes to run against Tracy. From now on Jim has his hands full trying to sabotage Tracy's relentless campaign, impregnate his wife, convince himself his next door neighbor, a recent divorcee, is really going to understand him if they can only check into a motel for a couple of hours...and deal with the consequences of everything he set in motion. br /br /Election, written and directed by Alexander Payne, is one of the funniest, darkest satires of human behavior since Jonathan Swift recommended that the poor should simply sell their children to be eaten by the rich. There are a lot of teenagers in this movie, but it's not just another teen-age movie. We're looking at the ludicrous depths to which ambition and good intentions, when mixed with politics, can take us. If that seems ponderous, it's about as ponderous as Tracy Flick's mom writing compulsively to people like Connie Chung and Elizabeth Dole asking for advice. (Never give up on your dreams is the usual reply.) br /br /The script moves from the exaggerated to the outlandish with great style. The actors deliver the goods with deadpan sincerity and self-serving honesty. Reese Witherspoon as Tracy Flick hits the bull's-eye with unnerving accuracy. She is so sincere in her insincerity, which is, in Tracy Flick's own way, completely sincere, that Witherspoon makes us smile and shudder at the same time. As outstanding as she is, Matthew Broderick is the heart of the movie. Jim McAllister is part lech, part nebbish, but mostly good guy. It's a funny, almost poignant performance. Payne's script and Broderick's acting give us a perfect ending that's just as brittle, cool and amusing as the rest of the movie. br /br /I like Election a lot. I hope as time passes the movie isn't forgotten. The DVD transfer, widescreen and anamorphic, looks just fine. There's an audio commentary, which I didn't listen to, by Payne.

4 out of 5 stars entertaining throughout 99 minutes   September 29, 2007

This was an entertaining film to watch throughout its length but was neither very funny or very happy or sad.It was more a clever film that contrasted the best and worst behaviour of teachers and pupils in an american high school and held the viewer's attention because you wanted to know what would happen next.I wouldn't watch it a second time though because once you know what happens it spoils the viewing experience.

1 out of 5 stars Dark? Yes. Comedy? Definitely not!   September 12, 2007

After watching this on TV last night, I, at first, couldn't really decide if I had enjoyed it or not. Thinking back over it now I don't think I did. The initial attraction for watching it was Reese Witherspoon (she plays the high achieving student, Tracy, who has to be involved in everything school has to offer) who I rate highly as an actress. I guess she was pretty good in this film and did as best she could with a bad character and a storyline which was extremely boring and slow paced. Matthew Broderick, who plays the weird teacher who doesn't like Tracy, was definitely not suited to the role, his character was unlikeable and sleazy, he did not make me laugh once and I cringed practically every time he was on screen. I wouldn't really class this film as a comedy, even a dark one as surely even dark comedies you laugh at? I can't quite understand how so many reviewers have raved about this and think it's one of the best films ever made and ever so funny. I must have seen a different version because I just found it strange. I wouldn't watch this film again, if you really want to see it I'd advise to rent it rather than buy because I don't think you'd want to watch this film more than once.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding   August 11, 2007

how this film is so unheard of is beyond me. this is icredible outstanding and original film making, but i guess thats what you expect fom director Alexander Payne (sideways). im no fan of Matthew Broderick, but he does give a perfectly fitting and believable performance. Reese Witherspoon is incredibly entertaining and the supporting cast is perfectly picked and the film is wisely scripted. its gentle comedy is absolutely perfect, its drama supprisingly engaging and script solid as can be. this easily ranks along side sideways, little miss sunshine and the under rated trans america. one of the independent highlights of the decade.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime   June 10, 2007

This is a fantastic film. So dark, ambiguous and funny. It touches on many sensitive issues. Is it good to be a super ambitious kid, sexuality, the dilemmas that teachers face, whether it is good to achieve or not to achieve, marriage and the machinations of institutions.br /br /Jim McAllister, the teacher, is a great character who engages your sympathy, despite his flaws. This film makes you think hard about how to be in life, and makes you laugh when it still doesn't work out.
