Amazon.co.uk Review Slick to a fault, this glossy action flick takes place in sunny Florida, where Martin Lawrence and Will Smith play two cops--one married with kids, the other a swinging bachelor. The two are forced to trade places to foil criminal mastermind Fouchet (Tcheky Karyo) who has stolen $100 million worth of heroin from a police lockup. Violent, illogical and filled with wall-to-wall profanity, iBad Boys/i was the last film produced by the hit-making team of Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer before Simpson's untimely death and marked the directorial debut of Michael Bay who followed up with iThe Rock/i. iBad Boys/i will be of interest to action buffs and fans of Tea Leoni, who makes one of her early screen appearances in the central supporting role. i--Jeff Shannon/i

A Badly Wasted Opportunity May 9, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm a big fan of action films, with cop movies topping the bill. Having read the other reviews here I had high hopes for this film - I ignored the occasional negative review reasoning that any film with Will Smith in it can't be that bad. How wrong I was!br /br /The cinematography is lush and colourful, helped significantly by the Miami backdrop. And that is about as far as my compliments can reach I'm afraid - the film rapidly falls apart from the first moment the characters open their mouths. br /br /The script here is utterly dreadful! Whilst similar untaxing commercial offerings such as the likes of Lethal Weapon or Die Hard give you witty and slick lines, Bad Boys instead resorts to perpetual bickering between the protagonists. It soon becomes tiresome and headache inducing. If I want a two hour bickering match I'll insult my mother in law - I really don't want to pay for the privilage thank you very much.br /br /Worse, the contrived plot lines are just farcical. The basic plot premise is fine - the heist of drugs from a police impound - but the leaden, childish and forced attempt at both script and d'enouement does a great job of killing any potential the initial pitch may have had long before this turkey was actually hatched. A good script flows effortlessly and with finesse, twisting unexpectedly on its elegant and enjoyable path. This no-brainer stubbornly plods around like a doped teen with an asbo. It might be wearing a bit of bling on the outside, but under the hoodie it's sullen and ugly.br /br /Back in the days when I was 12 years old I might just have enjoyed the ridiculous identity swap comedy antics routine, mugging to camera, constant yelling and agro, over-acting and ham fisted attempts at a buddie cop movie. Now though I'm a little more discerning. Basically this is one of the least enjoyable cop films I've ever encountered.br /br /If you want a good knockabout cop movie watch any of the Die Hard or Lethal Weapon series. For something more serious but retaining the Miami glitz see Miami Vice. Someone To Watch Over Me is stylish too if you'd like to read my review. Or for a truly great - and I mean World beating - cop show experience try The Shield or The Wire.br /br /As for this turkey - stuff it!br /br /
"What did i say, did you hear what i said, i heard what i said cos i was standing there when i said it!!" Hahaha September 21, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I love this film, it definately goes down as one of my favourite films. Its packed with action and laughs, with some of the funniest quotes i've ever heard. Even though Will and Martin are the main characters, i feel it's Joe Pantoliano (Captain Howard) who steals the film for me with his scene playing basketball in the gym. Overall a very entertaining film.
WHATCHA GONNA DO?? August 18, 2007 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is something about black humour that I love. And I don't mean humour that is gross or dark, I really mean humour by black actors/artists. Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor were funny in their day. Whoopie Goldberg has me in stitches when she is on stage or in a movie. Chris Rock is an up and coming comic genius. And the two guys in this film have me in laughing almost every time I see them on screen. Martin Lawrence was the best part of Boomerang and in Bad Boys he is hilarious as the married side kick to Will Smith's bachelor playboy. And of course Will Smith launched his career with this movie. He is very funny in The Fresh Prince television show and he shows here that his propensity for comedy is excellent. Together these two are brilliant, one of the best cop buddies since Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh.br /br /Bad Boys is a story of two cops that have to protect a witness that saw her best friend murdered. Her best friend may have had information on some guys that committed huge crimes that involved drugs. Now it is up to the two heroes to try and crack the case and not get into too much trouble in the process. There are so many cliched things about this movie, but sometimes cliches are good, if you have likable actors to carry out the script. As in every buddy cop movie, you have the two partners that are very different but have a mutual respect for each other. You have the police chief that does nothing but tell them how much they have cost the department, how they could be suspended if they are not careful and how they are the best at what they do but a little too care free. You have the bad guy with the foreign accent who is charming and debonair but as deadly as a rattlesnake. Take any good cop/caper movie from Lethal Weapon, Stakeout, Beverly Hills Cop to films like Last Action Hero. They all have the same themes, but what makes them all good, and that includes this one, is how well they are executed. A lot of the credit has to go to Smith and Lawrence, but I also think special attention has to be given to Michael Bay. He was a new comer here and he proved that he has a great eye for action. The chase scene that starts in Smith's apartment and ends on the street where Lawrence almost dies, is one of the most emotionally charged scenes I've seen in a cop comedy. It kind of reminded me of Lethal Weapon 2, when at the end I thought Riggs was dead after his battle with the South African bad guy. That had power, this one is even better than that.br /br /Bad Boys is great entertainment and Smith and Michael Bay have become major players in Hollywood now. This is the start of it all and if you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it. It is funny, action packed and likable. You can't go wrong. If you like some of the films that were mentioned in the review, then you'll have a hard time not liking this one. An excellent film.
Buddy Pic Sleeper Hit that made Lawrence and Smith Superstars Overnight May 20, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bad Boys was the sleeper hit that when released in 1995 that made stars of all those involved and to this day is still loads of fun to watch. Mike Lowrey (Will Smith) and Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) were the best buddy pic buddies in an action film released in 95 and Micheal Bay showed what he could do. If you're looking for action and comedy at their best then look no further than Bad Boys.
Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad Boys April 4, 2007 3 out of 8 found this review helpful
For some reason I never saw this on its release but rented it on the back of the Hot Fuzz namechecks. I'm not at all adverse to buddybuddy cop movies and still enjoy watching 80s classics like Lethal Weapon, 48hrs and Beverly Hills Cop...however Bad Boys is a truely terrible film. It looks horrible (with loads of graduated filters Top Gunning up every scene), the story's silly, the characters unlikeable and the action scenes tacky. If your a massive fan of Will Smith watch it, otherwise RUN!
