Amazon.co.uk Review And the hits just keep on coming. Sylvester Stallone, who can't seem to draw flies unless he's playing Rocky Balboa or John Rambo, went back to the IRambo/I well (or septic system, as it were) to show his well-known solidarity with the Afghan freedom fighters who battled the Soviet army in the 1980s. This time it's personal: his handler, Richard Crenna, is captured by the Evil Empire and so it is up to Rambo to leave his work in a monastery in Southeast Asia (no, seriously) in order to rescue him from the Ruskies. Ever wonder why the Russians had such a miserable time in Afghanistan? It was because Rambo took them on single-handed and sent them packing with hammer-and-sickle all the way back to Moscow. Cartoonish action, taken ever so seriously by Stallone, who was working desperately to scrape away the unsightly wax build up from his reputation. --IMarshall Fine/IpThe IRambo/I trilogy is also available on DVD as a complete set.

Makes Rambo II look like "Apocalypse Now" August 8, 2008 This is one silly film. It has such daft gunfghts that you long for the realism of Buck Rogers. br /Passes the time, don't expect luxuries like plot or characters, though.
John J. Rambo Vs. Commies = YES. March 25, 2008 Right... anyone who calls himself a man who did not enjoy this film, SOD OFF. Yes, in terms of filmmaking and as an art form ('Oooooh'), this is clearly pants. But at the end of the day, who doesn't want to see John Rambo taking on thousands of Commies with a machine gun and a bow and arrow to rescue his good friend Colonel Trautman! So all you poncey pretentious arses who think you know anything about films, and piss and moan about this film.. Do one! Off a cliff preferably, because this is awesome! br /br /Also check out Commando, most manly Arnie film EVER.
Oh this is bad March 23, 2008 First Blood was an excellent movie, First Blood 2 (Rambo) was poor and now Part 3 is the worst of the lot. This time Rambo takes on the entire Russian army (gun ships and all) in Afganistan. Neither of the 2 sequels have dated well and neither where any good when they came out. Hollywood at its worst.
Politically Dubious Second Rambo Sequel February 26, 2008 After his rescue of American POW's from Vietnam in First Blood part II, Rambo has retired to a Thai monastery to live a peaceful life in a community he feels accepts him. When his mentor and friend Col. Trautman asks for his assistance on a mission into Northern Afghanistan to deliver weapons to 'freedom fighters' (the Taliban) so they can defend themselves against the Soviet invasion, Rambo declines. Unfortunately Trautman is captured when his team is ambushed and the United States won't take official action so Rambo decides to wage another unofficial one man war to rescue his friend.br /br /I can't decide which is worse, this or First Blood part II. I think probably this one because it's truly laughable in parts. Rambo was a man haunted by war in First Blood which brought an interesting dimension to his character. In Rambo III he has become a caricature. A bullet dodging, indestructible killing machine who can't keep a vest on for more than 10 minutes. He is almost as ridiculous as his spoof alter ego, Topper Harley in Hot Shots. Again there are some good action sequences (Rambo on horseback vs. helicopter) but the film is let down by poor dialogue and weak story (Trautman goes to Afghanistan, gets captured and Rambo finds out before agreeing to go and arriving within a 5 minute window). Poor excuse for violent action.br /br /Like this? Try: Commando
Weakest of the three Rambo adventures June 25, 2007 This third First Blood adventure, inexplicably titled Rambo III, sees John J Rambo brought out of retirement in Thailand for another round of shooting things, stabbing people with his trusty giant serrated knife, and blowing stuff up with his explosive-tipped arrows. He's heading off into Afghanistan this time, to team up with some Afghan freedom fighters and rescue his buddy Colonel Troutman from the invading Russians. Also, since he might as well make the most of such a long trip, he's going to fight half the Russian army while he's at it. With his shirt off.br /br /As with part two in the series, this discards the thoughtful quality that elevated the first film and concentrates instead on providing a bunch of overblown and preposterous action from start to finish. The action, however, is not as well orchestrated as it was in part two, so it's a little less satisfying to watch.br /br /The character of Rambo has changed a bit for this one, although it's not too radical. This is still the well oiled war machine who can fight a helicopter without ruffling his blow-dried hair too much, but he also indulges in the odd quip here and there. br /br /If nothing else, Rambo III stands as a fascinating insight into the changing face of world politics since the eighties. The film is dedicated to 'the gallant people of Afghanistan', which is an uncomfortable statement to read given America's current relationship with that country. Still, I don't think I've seen another US film that centres around that particular moment in history, so that's pretty interesting.br /br /Other than that, this is easily the weakest of the First Blood series. It lacks the substance of part one, and the enjoyable action of part two, leaving it with very little else to offer. Hopefully, the upcoming John Rambo (aka First Blood Part IV, aka Rambo IV) will return to the spirit of the original film and be much better than this one.
