Amazon.co.uk Review In an unusual blend of genres IGentlemen's Relish/I combines the appeal of well-mannered comedy romances such as IA Room with a View/I with the ribaldry of a ICarry On/I movie. Following numerous award nominations for IMrs Brown/I (1997), Billy Connolly reunites with the BBC to play Kingdom Swann, a delightfully good-natured artist in this light period drama. In Edwardian London, with his art out of fashion, Swann turns to photography, only to have his semi-nude Biblical tableaux exploited as erotica by an assistant, a splendid Douglas Henshall. The film is balanced by a subplot about political hypocrisy and the Suffragette movement, which revolves around an impressive performance from Sarah Lancashire as the housekeeper who Swann eventually realises he is in love with. p Without ever being either particularly dramatic or more than gently amusing, IGentlemen's Relish/I is an amiable romp with the star role perfectly tailored to Connolly's charm. Like IStiff Upper Lips/I (1998), the sexual comedy is predictably entertaining, while an overly sign-posted ending suggests a sequel. Given the subject, postcard-humour fans may be amused that the name of the screenwriter is David Nobbs, whose adaptation of ILove on a Branch Line/I (1993) offered a more elegant slice of farce. I--Gary S. Dalkin/I

Good (unwholesome) entertainment for the family March 5, 2001 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Billy Connolly (Swann) can hardly do any wrong in his choice of acting slots, since - even if he's on auto-pilot - he can bring an enthusiasm and delight to his performances most others crossing from comedy to acting fail to bring (we know who we mean). Sarah Lancashire (Violet Askey) additionally provides a wonderfully measured foil to the hapless Swann. She conveys her unrequited ardour and genteel dowdiness with wonderfully comic and touching delight ("Do you have it in black?" she asks having tried a stunningly colourful dress on in a shop). As you would expect in an Edwardian costume drama the sex is more titillating than erotic (and all the better for it), though Douglas Henshall (Cromwell Marsh) lends a charmingly wicked tone to the proceedings with his on-the-make role as Swann's assistant. It's a bit of a mystery why Connolly gets to keep his unmistakable Scottish voice whilst the yet-to-be-fully-appreciated Henshall adopts the mannerisms of Michael Caine circa 'Alfie'. It's not as if Henshall hasn't already proved his worth beyond the confines of his natural Glaswegian accent (get the Romeo and Juliet CD from the BBC Radio Four collection). Still, it's a relatively inoffensive comedy-drama with good performances all round.
