Amazon.co.uk Review
Mel Gibson set aside his art-house credentials to star as a crazy cop paired with a stable one (Danny Glover) in this full-blown 1987 Richard Donner action picture. The most violent film in the series (which includes three sequels), iLethal Weapon/i is also the edgiest and most interesting. After Gibson's character jumps off a building handcuffed to a man, and Gary Busey (as a cold, efficient enforcer) lets his hand get burned without flinching, there is a sense that anything can happen, and it usually does. Donner's strangely messy visual and audio style doesn't make a lot of aesthetic sense, but it stuck with all four movies. I--Tom Keogh/I

1 out of 5 stars Aged Very Badly!!!   July 28, 2007

Made in the 80's and boy can't you tell. Watching this now is pretty depressing to be honest with you. Mel Gibson gets mad and blows away all the bad guys, hooray...That pretty much sums up the plot. Oh, I forgot, throw in the lame story about his wife getting popped off and turn him into a suicidal cop living on the edge, now we have a film. Genius. I'm sorry to upset fans of the film but unfortunately it's just a dull, formulaic, uninspiring waste of space as far as I can see. Although the ever dependable Gary Busey does another smart turn as one of the maniacal bad guys.

4 out of 5 stars Best of the 80s   July 9, 2007

It has to be said that the eighties for films was pretty dire and it was not a good time to be a film fan, but thankfully one or two gems stuck out. As far as I'm concerned, this and Die Hard were the best thrillers to come out then. I still believe that this slightly has the edge over Die Hard. It it occasionally good humoured, even though it has a pretty unpleasant story, but it is also the coming together of two guys who become great buddies. It all sounds rather cliched now, but that buddy thing still holds up well, after all, look at Rush Hour. br /br /The famous scene is of course when Riggs tries to blow his own head off, attempting suicide and we hadn't seen that sort of thing before. br /br /It is best to forget the awful sequels, and yes I do think they are that bad. The first sequel managed to stand up a little bit, but it was too cartoony for my liking. The worst mistake they made with the sequels was to lighten up. The original and the only one I own stands up best because it is darker and that's the way I like it.br /

4 out of 5 stars Dont make em like they used to...   June 14, 2007
This is undoubtedly one of those 80's action flicks that go with so many other infamous titles, all containing-lethal weapon included-many famous one liners that have been overused in every comedy known to man over the years. Classic 80's performances that people may call great, and although the acting is decent and mel and glover give much suited performances, all 80's acting isnt really that great, but you really do have to love it, along with all the greatness of 80's fashion. br /Much deserved cult action movie with enough action and well paced laughs to keep you entertained throughoutm br /they really dont make this kind of action movie anymore-with this kind of charm to it.

5 out of 5 stars kick ass fun   June 10, 2007
I watched Lethal Weapon 3 today, after buying the trilogy (I haven't seen 4, and I only buy movies I remember seeing and liking). It's still as good and funny as I remembered it; the other two movies are, too. There's just something so right in the chemistry between Murtaugh (Danny Glover) and Riggs (Mel Gibson). I don't think any other actors could have pulled it off. You genuinely care for both of them. Danny Glover's infectious laugh and Gibson's endless one-liners never fail to make me giggle. What's so great is these movies often go from laugh-out-loud funny, to tear jerkingly serious, in a matter of moments. They keep you rivetted to the spot, cheering them on as they fight to right injustice and "get the bad guys". And when they do, you feel real exhileration and want to punch the air very much like Riggs does (like in Lethal Weapon 2 when he brings that whole house collapsing down the hill, killing the bad guys within!) Some would say this is just cliched, painting with numbers movie-making. Maybe it is, but it just works! Even now, decades on, Lethal Weapon 1, 2 3 still hold up well as all-action, no-holds-barred, funny kick-ass flicks. The only thing I don't get is, Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 are 18 cert, with strong language and violence; Lethal Weapon 3 is 15, even though it has strong language (numerous "melon farmer" references, if you know what I mean) and general cussing as well as the obligatory gun violence. Why the lower certification?br /br /Anyway, if you're knew to this series, just buy Lethal Weapon first to decide. But they're all well worth it, in my opinion. Well, at least 1,2 3 are.

4 out of 5 stars brilliant   October 25, 2006

lethal weapon is a 1987 cop buddy movie that blended in the over zealous blood kill that incorporated the 80s in the action movie genre, mel gibson and danny glover play riggs and murtaugh, two cops who come from different backgrounds, lead very different lives and treat their sense of living differently as gibson is more gung ho who has a death wish since his wife was killed due to him being a cop, glover is a family man, getting on in age who prides himself on playing it safe.br /The two cops have to learn to work with eack other, like each other amd then respect each other all the while fighting evil and trying to uncover a murder plot, the film is witty and intense and violent and thats what we love.
