Amazon.co.uk Review IRush Hour 2/I retains the appeal of its popular predecessor, so fans will enjoy the antics of the returning stars, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. The action--and there's plenty of it--starts in Hong Kong, where Detective Lee (Chan) and his LA counterpart Detective Carter (Tucker) are attempting a vacation, only to get assigned to sleuth a counterfeiting scheme involving a Triad kingpin (John Lone), his lethal henchwoman (Zhang Ziyi, from ICrouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon/I) and an American billionaire (Alan King). Director Brett Ratner simply lets his stars strut their stuff, so it hardly matters that the plot is disposable, or that his direction is so bland he may well have directed the film from a phone in a Jacuzzi.p At its best, IRush Hour 2/I compares favourably to Chan's glossiest Hong Kong hits, and when the action moves to Las Vegas (where Don Cheadle makes an unbilled cameo), the film goes into high-pitched hyper-drive, riding an easy wave of ambitious stunt-work and broad, derivative humour. However, echoes of IBeverly Hills Cop/I are easy to see and stale ideas (including a comedic highlight for Jeremy Piven as a gay clothier) are made even more aggravating by dialogue that's almost Neanderthal in its embrace of retro-racial stereotypes. Of course, that's what makes IRush Hour 2/I a palatable dish of mainstream comedy: it insults and comforts the viewer at the same time, and while some may find Tucker's relentless hamming unbearable, those who enjoyed IRush Hour/I are sure to appreciate another dose of Chan-Tucker lunacy. I--Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com/I

Outtakes are funny too April 23, 2007 James Carter comes to Hong Kong for a holiday with Inspector Lee. However at the same time a bomber is striking key American targets. Carter and Lee get drawn into an investigation into a counterfeiting ring run by Ricky Tan and his new partner Hu Li. Before long their up to their necks in trouble again.br /br /The story doesn't matter because basically it's this - Carter talks funny to somebody while Lee is distracted, it then all kicks off and Lee does lots of fancy moves, it then moves to a different location and the pattern repeats again. Essentially that's it - but it doesn't matter, it worked the first time and it works again here. The story is better than the first film's, although the twists don't work as well as they think they do.br /br /The main improvement since the first movie is that there's more fighting action. In RH Jackie Chan's fighting was toned down to make room for Tucker's comedy. In RH2 Chan is allowed to have much more action and the addition of Zhang Ziyi ups the ante all the more. Tucker still gets to do his big-mouthed comedy and have plenty of banter between him and Chan, be sexual with girls and fight. It's not breaking new ground but it's quite fun.br /br /Chan and Tucker are very good, mainly because they're having fun and comfortable with each other. Lone adds class and menace as Ricky Tan and Sanchez adds spice as the beautiful Isabella. The best addition is Zhang Ziyi - she doesn't have any character but she can certainly move! The cast also has very funny cameos from Don Cheadle and Jeremy Piven - adding laughs and class.br /br /The only problem with the film is that it is so very formulaic and is just a simple crowd pleaser. Some of the banter is a few steps off racism (`I'll kick you back to Africa') and much of Tucker's ogling is borderline sexism. However it's all so very polished that you don't notice.br /br /Overall it's a very entertaining blockbuster. The only problem is this - the funniest bits are the outtakes, shouldn't it have been in the film?!
not as good as first one. January 9, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
viewers beware, this one is not as good as the first one, this one has too many characters in it anf the plot is too congested, in saying this it isnt a bad film to watch but to really get the smile on your face i reccommend the first one of the installments until rush hour 3 comes out. its funnier and more direct than this one. the romance part in this also spoils the film slightly as chan is not the average "get the girl at the end" type of character.br /br /I gave this 2 star becuase there are some laughs in it and some action scenes are impressive however its "rush hour" which will make you the happier person

Fastest hands and the fastest mouth! August 4, 2004 4 out of 6 found this review helpful
Rush Hour 2 is as funny, if not funnier, as the original - no easy feat for an action/comedy sequel. Rush Hours 1 2 work so well because of the hilarious chemistry between the two leading actors, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. The comedy is provided by Chris and his interaction with Jackie, and the action is served by Mr. Chan, who performs eye-bulging stunts and amazing Kung-Fu fighting scenes. Mix with an ex-policemen determend to become rich through lundering fake money in a casino and BANG! Good old fashioned, fun action blockbuster.pThe DVD is also packed with special features, including commentaries, "the making of..." etc and I thouroughly recommend not only Rush Hour 2, but the original aswell.
