Amazon.co.uk Review Eddie Murphy's 1988 vehicle IComing to America/I was probably the point at which his status as a mainstream big-screen comedian finally gelled, following the highly successful I48 Hours/I pairing with Nick Nolte. Never mind the hackneyed storyline: under John Landis's tight direction, he turns in a star performance (and several brilliant cameos) that is disciplined and extremely funny.p Murphy plays an African prince who comes to New York officially to sow his wild oats. Privately, he is seeking a bride he can marry for love rather than one chosen by his parents. With his companion (Arsenio Hall, who pushes Murphy all the way in the comedy stakes), he settles in the borough of Queens and takes a job in a hamburger joint. A succession of hilarious satire-barbed adventures ensue, plus the required romantic conclusion. The script is crammed with ripe one-liners , but "Freeze, you diseased rhinoceros pizzle" has to be the most devastating hold-up line of all time. Film buffs will appreciate a brief appearance by Don Ameche as a down-and-out, but this is Murphy's film and he generates warmth enough to convert the most ambivalent viewer.p BOn the DVD:/B The only--rather pointless--extra on offer is the original theatrical trailer which adds nothing apart from a rapid recap of the story. But the 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen presentation (the picture quality is diamond sharp) and Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack recreate the original authentic cinematic experience. The choreography of 1980s pop diva Paula Abdul in the lavish wedding scenes and Nile Rodgers' pounding musical score are the main beneficiaries. --IPiers Ford/I

Now THIS is Eddie Murphy at his finest! July 4, 2008 ...not that NORBIT rubbish!br /- Golden Child? Greatbr /- Dr Doolittle(s)? No probsbr /- Daddy Day Care? Goodbr /- 48 Hours and BHills Cop aren't my cup-of-tea but are classic Murphy.br /- COMING TO AMERICA is the best!br /- NORBIT is far and away the closest to 'Donkey' that Eddie Murphy has come to (and that says something considering he voiced 'Donkey' in the Shrek films which were great!)br /If you like Eddie Murphy, watch Coming To America again - do not watch Norbit! And if you're reading this after watching Murphy in Norbit and liked it (shudder!) then don't watch this because it is a completely different actor!!!
Worth a Date April 23, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
After several years of starring in rowdy action comedies and con man capers, Eddie Murphy gets a chance to deliver a more restrained performance with this film and he manages to do so very well. Murphy portrays Akeem, an African prince who is being pressured into a forced marriage by his parents (James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair). The woman that they have chosen for him only sees him for his royalty and therefore does not really love him. Akeem sees this right away and brings his loyal servant, Semi (Arsenio Hall) along with him on a discreet mission to America where Akeem hopes to find a beautiful woman who will love him and accept him for who he really is and not just see him for his royalty. Posing as "common folk", Akeem and Semi get jobs at a McDonald's style restaurant and Akeem soon falls for the daughter (Shari Headley) of the restaurant's owner (John Amos). The film features many hilarious scenes and characters especially a group of boxing obsessed senior citizens who spend their days arguing with a barber shop owner. Murphy and Hall demonstrate their levels of versatility by managing to go under heavy makeup and portray several different costarring roles. Yet another example of why Murphy is one of the funniest actors in recent Hollywood history.
Is this a comedy????? April 22, 2007 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
After reading all the other reviews i can safely say that i'm sure they watched a different film from me. beacause after hearing how funny that coming to america was i watheced it expecting a comedy of when edie murphy was funny unlike everything he has done in the past 15 years but unfortunatley this film is as terrible as such disaster as pluto nash, and daddy day care .

Quite simply one of the funniest films I have ever seen. Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall are comic dynamite as Akeem and Semi - and all of the other characters they play in the film! There are so many moments of pure comic brilliance in this film but my favourite parts of the film are the scenes set in the barber shop and the scenes involving Arsenio Hall's Reverend Brown. I have watched this film over and over again and I still laugh every time I see it. Pure comic genius.
a great film that has lasted the test of time February 8, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Coming to america is a 1988 film directed by john landis and starring eddie murphy as a young heir to the throne in a city i africa, all his life he has been pampered and spoilt and now he has a bride picked for him to marry, feeling trapped by his surroundings and the expectations placed on him, eddie along with his royal aide decide to banish free of their luxeries and head to america where eddie can find real love and find out what life is all about.br /The final is genuinely funny in parts and always entertaining and thats a rare thing, there are some memorable scenes as eddie cant adapt to america at first, the film is racist in parts, there is no point avoiding that fact,i suppose these things make for some humourous moments and i guess in 1988 racism wasnt the issue it is today so beware of this if you are new to coming to america but for the most part its all very tongue in cheek and i doubt if there was intention to offend, but all in all this is a funny film made in an era when murphy was goldust and this film is another all round success.
