Amazon.co.uk Review This smart, tautly directed thriller from Wolfgang Petersen is about the cat-and-mouse games between a Secret Service agent named Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and the brilliant, psychopathic assassin (John Malkovich) who's itching to get the President in his cross hairs. IIn the Line of Fire/I's back-story--Horrigan is haunted by his inability to prevent John Kennedy's assassination (Eastwood is computer-generated into archival footage)--is more than a little hokey, but the plotting itself is smartly, even ingeniously, constructed. Petersen manages a vice-like grip on the tension and Eastwood even gets to deliver an ever-more-timely lecture on the diminished nature of the office of President. Eastwood's as gruff and as infuriating to the by-the-book Powers That Be as ever and Malkovich oozes delightful menace. Rene Russo capably co-stars as a colleague with whom Horrigan gets friendly. I--David Kronke/I

Magnificent Malkovich in cool crime thriller November 23, 2008 Police inspector Frank Horrigan (Eastwood) is set an assignment to track down a man who claims he will assassinate the President of the United States.br /br /Wolfgang Peterson (Air Force one) directs a fine established crime thriller in a year where a certain John Malkovich starred as a certain Mitch Leary. br /br /The main watching point for this film is Malkovich. The silence and emotion behind this character is a reflection on how the past can change a person. Malkovich's sophisticated attitude towards the protagonist is a thing of beauty. His evilness is understandable and he even outclasses Eastwood, which is no easy thing to achieve. His Oscar nominated turn as the man who wants the President murdered is a sure fire way to get you hooked into an entertaining if slightly cheesy narrative.br /br /Opening with two cops going undercover sets the crime agenda and with a few dramatic turns install, you will be hooked. As the film roles on, we get to see more of Frank and his past and how he has had a difficult time of late. Then Mitch enters and the stakes are raised. It is Mitch who makes this film what it is. Had the character been anything short of mad, it would have been an ordinary crime thriller. The two have great chemistry even though there is hardly any screen time between them, which is a credit to the actors and directors who create a wonderful dramatic tension to give the plot extra spice.br /br /The script is slightly cheesy with love interests, a last gasp attempt to resolve situations and defying the odds. Though these elements usually ruin pictures, the direction and performances are enough to save the film. The action sequences are well thought out, particularly the roof top chase and the scene in the lift. The fact this film doesn't overdo the action is an added bonus and is kept solid and consistent through Peterson's direction.br /br /This 1993 picture has a side story of the Presidents of America. If you are not a political person then there is no fear as this is none educational, more of an action and dramatic styled refection on past politics. This is a shame however as this could have stepped up the ante of the plot and driven the film on a serious everyday issue but instead was used to build on Frank's personality, his lack of belief in himself, which ultimately leads to a fairly awful and cringing saving endingbr /br /Though the writing is slightly conventional there is a charm about this picture, and an amazing turn from Malkovich who you will be secretly routing for come the end of a fast moving narrative.br /br /8.5/10
First class thriller November 19, 2008 John Malkovich is convincingly creepy and vicious in his role as an assassin turned maniac who wants to kill the president. Next to him, Clint Eastwood is a secret service man who failed to protect JFK. Their demons drive this excellent film, which is convincing and very involving. br /br /It's an excellent movie and first class entertainment.
Clint kicks more butt in this 90's thriller March 15, 2008 In The Line of Fire is another fantastic film from Clints 'latter years', though it's always nice to see by this time he still had a full voice and wasn't so creaky. The storyline is good enough to keep you hooked, while the plot, though has been done quite a few times before, is given a 'Presidential' makeover when looney-assasin John Malkovich plans to kill the President before the end of the current elections.br /br /It's also funny in its own way that he still has this amazing ability to attract even young women, as he so does in this film despite the 40/50 year age gap. Must be his own brand of aftershave... Davidoff hasn't pulled for me yet!br /br /What's also nice to see is that he puts a smile on his face regularly whilst sweet-talking his assistant on the job, and can still pull off those 'butt' or 'ass' related one-liners that he loves. br /br /Highly recommended if you're a thriller fan, or just like a bit of Eastwood!
"All we have is the game. I'm on offence, you're on defence." January 30, 2008 Warner Bros.' favourite son's first film outside the studio since the mid-seventies (also the first scored by Morricone in even longer) resulted in one of the best thrillers of the Nineties. The premise is simple, offering Eastwood's ageing secret service agent, who failed to save JFK, the chance for redemption by stopping Malkovich's assassin, who latches on to his guilt in an engrossing cat-and-mouse game. The idea of the criminal and his pursuer forging a bond has been done many times before, but seldom as well as here.br /br /What really makes it work is the strength of the characterisation, giving the audience a stake in the protagonists that adds to the tension. As a result, Eastwood and Malkovich's confrontations (filmed simultaneously rather than separately to give an edge to the performances) are as electrifying as the edge-of-seat action sequences. Even the use of CGi is subtle and well integrated into the story rather than drawing constantly attention to themselves.br /br /Self-deprecating, self-doubting, the kinder, gentler Eastwood on show here gives his most likeable performance to date, while the beautifully underplayed and surprisingly moving scene where he describes the events of that fateful day in Dallas is one of the finest moments in his career. The erratic John Malkovich is more than a match for him, contributing his best screen work to date, with a good supporting cast also on strong form, while Wolfgang Petersen's direction, Maguire's script and John Bailey's outstanding photography all make strong impressions.br /br /While this special edition does offer some good special features (it had previously been available as a barebones edition), it loses a star by keeping 8 seconds of cuts made by the BBFC for the film's theatrical release.
Edge of your seat thriller pepered with Malkovich's superb performance December 19, 2007 IN THE LINE OF FIRE, in my opinion, is an excellent, suspenseful, and edge-of-your-seat action/drama/thriller! I thought that Agent Horrigan (Clint Eastwood) and Agent Raines (Rene Russo) looked good in the attire they wore at the presidential dinner. As for Leary (John Malkovich), he was a sick man who loved to toy with Frank by phone. He looked good in the tuxedo he wore near the end of the film, though. One thing that surprised me was the growing attraction between Agent Horrigan and Agent Raines. Before I wrap this up, I'd like to say that the entire cast and crew did an outstanding job, I loved the setting, and I couldn't get enough of it. Now, in conclusion, to all you Clint Eastwood fans who haven't seen this excellent, suspenseful, and edge-of-your-seat action/drama/thriller, I highly recommend it.
