Amazon.co.uk Review Fifteen years after John Carpenter squandered a great idea on a mediocre movie (iEscape from New York/i), he does it again--this time on the Left Coast. Kurt Russell is back as the terminally cynical one-eyed action hero Snake Plissken who, this time, has been coerced into saving the world in Los Angeles. It's 2013 and L.A. is now an island maximum-security prison off the coast of California. Snake has 10 hours to find a doomsday weapon that's fallen into the hands of revolutionaries before he dies of a virus with which he's been injected. But the action is clumsy and unimaginative: lots of shootouts and very little suspense. Even the bad guys aren't particularly inventive; only Pam Grier, as a transsexual gang leader, strikes any sparks. Russell growls his way through the role but can only blame himself: He cowrote the script with Carpenter. I--Marshall Fine/I

Misunderstood August 11, 2007 Alot of people have reviewed this badly, which I think is unfair. If you go to watch this film and try to see it as a serious action film, then don't bother. Escape From L.A. should be seen as pure FUN, something missing from most of the action genre. As soon as you realize that this is a satire of the genre then you appreciate it for what it really is. Entertainment. Think "From Dusk Till Dawn" and you'll be on the same page. Yes the effects are bad. If you cant see Snake surfing a tidal wave in the middle of L.A. as taking the mickey, then God help you. Another reviewer commented on "bad acting" even though you have Pam Grier, Steve Buscemi, Kurt Russell and a whole host of others. Its just the style of the film. If what you want is gore, guns, blatant sexism, tongue in cheek humor and some of the best actors around. Then this is for you. If not then go and rent "Alien" or "Die Hard" as these are much more typical of an action movie. Oh yeah and I'd take this over "Escape From New York" I just enjoyed it more.
Underappreciated Snake Plissken adventure December 27, 2006 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This long-awaited sequel to Escape From New York was considered a disappointment when it was released, but watching it again recently I felt it was an underappreciated film. It's basically a remake of Escape From New York, so it takes the core concept of the original and does something slightly different with it. What keeps it from being entirely stale is that this film is much more of a satire, with some humorous pot-shots being taken at the moral majority and at Los Angeles itself.br /br /Here, Los Angeles has become separated from the mainland United States by an earthquake, thus making it a perfect contender for the prison status enjoyed by New York. Once again, the government has lost something of value; and, once again, Snake Plissken is the only man they can send in to retrieve it. Poor old Snake - he's been caught again, set up again, and is again forced to do the government's dirty work against his will. br /br /The real joy of this film is seeing Kurt Russell back as Snake Plissken. This is a brilliant character he has created with John Carpenter, so a great deal of the enjoyment comes from seeing Snake, as anti-heroic as ever, once again screwed over by the man and biding his time until he can get some payback. The easy option for a sequel would have been to soften the character and make him more heroic, but, if anything, he's more of a selfish outlaw than ever. This is never more evident than in the film's final scene, which I won't spoil here, but suffice to say it's a great middle-finger moment for a great middle-finger character.br /br /As befits this series, the special effects are not great. In fact, this features some of the worst CGI committed to a major motion picture, but - as with the original - this is an easy flaw to overlook.br /br /If you are a fan of Escape From New York and can live with a sequel that is a glorified remake, I recommend this one to you. Carpenter and Russell have done it again, in my opinion, so don't hesitate to check out the next chapter in the Snake Plissken story. Let's hope they get around to the rumoured Escape From Earth before they're both too old.
Need to be very forgiving to be enjoyed September 8, 2006 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I enjoyed this first time I saw it. Dumb as anything, but funny and with a lot of B movie charm.br /br /Then I was bored with it the next time I watched it. The last action scene with the helicopter is especially poorly filmed. br /br /The ending with the president is great. So cynical it takes your breath away.br /br /Bruce Campbell is wasted in a tiny cameo that sounds like a funny idea (plastic surgeon who uses live people for his body parts), but they didn't do anything with it.br /br /If you've not seen Escape from New York then buy that instead. This is okay if you're very forgiving, but it's nothing to get excited about.
names snake..i mean plisken, no wait its snake April 11, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
if your a fan of the snake (escape from new york) i would recommend getting this. More action, some lame cameos i.e. peter fonda as a futuristic type surfer, and a predictable ending. however the character snake plisken played by russell is so cool he makes the film despite everything else
One of the best yet. March 8, 2006 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have to admit, this is my 3rd favourite film of all time. I suppose i love it because it is a stereotypical american hardman movie. Kurt Russel is greasy, the bad guys are in the government, he has big guns (both meanings) and it is just entertaining.brNot good, just entertaining.brSo why do i love it?brBecause Snake Pliskin (that name is perfect) shuts down the world at the end to cowboy music. He then lights up the last American Spirit cigarette in the world before it fades.brAbsolutle classic.
