Amazon.co.uk Review Anyone who's suffered the misfortune of stumbling upon Kevin Allen's nauseous debut ITwin Town/I--a ramshackle ITrainspotting/I transposed to the cinematic slag heap of Swansea--will be pleasantly surprised by this gentle sophomore effort. IThe Big Tease/I follows gay Glaswegian hairdresser Crawford Mackenzie (Craig Ferguson), a flamboyant character who stays just the right side of caricature, as he heads to LA to represent bonny Scotland in the World Freestyle Hairdressing Championship. Only there's a hitch: once in Hollywood, Crawford discovers he's only been invited to be a spectator at the event, which means the huge hotel bill he's racked up will have to come out of his own pocket. p Undeterred, the stubborn stylist sets about gaining a union card and, ultimately, entry to the competition, frantically trying to establish Beverly Hills contacts with a mind to pulling a few much-needed strings. Allen's movie is an interesting hybrid, half Hollywood satire (the greed, the self-importance, the insincerity) and half sports-movie with a twist (events inevitably lead to a climactic showdown, as Crawford goes blade-to-blade with the wonderfully pompous Norwegian champ). And yet, by and large, it works, the loquacious Ferguson giving us someone to hold onto in a slippery world populated by disdainful creeps, his probity alone ensuring our heartfelt support come competition night. The filmmakers' decision to opt for a "mockumentary" format a la IThe Blair Witch Project/I and IDrop Dead Gorgeous/I also pays dividends, for it is Crawford's candid confessions to camera that allow us to navigate beyond his carefully constructed plumage and discover the person beneath.--IJamie Graham/I

a desert island favourite December 30, 2008 This is one of my all time favourite comedy films. It ticks all the boxes; gay irrepressible Scottish hairdresser, reality show format ( documentary being made by Chris Langham)that highlights (excuse the pun) the shallowness of any award ceremony, totally over the top and impossible final hair creations including a scotsman in kilt toy appearing from the top of the winning hair do.br /If I were double billing I would put it with Kinky Bootsbr /this is one for just enjoying
Stear clear at all costs .... Not even the Hoff could rescue this one! August 7, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If I could give this film zero I would it is absolute dirge, consistantly unfunny and the lead charactor is probably the most annoying person I have ever had the mis-pleasure of viewing in a film, the only good parts of the film are the cameo from David Hasselhoff and the end credits, other than that just plain dreadful, utter rubbish! Dont waste your time!
Curling tongs anyone?....... March 16, 2004 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This clever and witty film delivers with each scene. A fictitious film crew from BBC television is following a young Scottish hairdresser as he goes to America to compete in the Hairdressing Championship - and bring home the "Golden Scissors" to Scotland. We follow him as he meets a variying aray of characters - from the over-eager chauffeur driver to the snooty Norweigan hairdresser - right up to the moment of competition.brIts funny, heart-warming, hilarious and just a very good movie - one to watch with loads of popcorn and some hankies (just in case!).
QUEEN OF SCOTS... November 18, 2002 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This creative film within a film, a mock documentary, is simply delightful. Funny and original, it is a biting satire on the Beverly Hills/Hollywood power circuit. In the process, it tells the wonderful story of Crawford MacKenzie, a popular and talented gay hairdresser from Glasgow, Scotland, who believes himself to be invited to represent Scotland in a prestigious hairdressing competition, the Platinum Scissors, to be held in Los Angeles, California. When he arrives, complete with a BBC camera crew filming his every move as part of a feature documentary they are making of Crawford's participation in the competition, Crawford discovers that he misread the letter. He is strictly to be a member of the audience and is told so in no uncertain terms by the patronizing director of the competition, who has sized up Crawford as a nobody.pThis does not deter Crawford from trying to be allowed to compete, as he definitely is not the kind of person who takes no for an answer. Crawford, charmingly played by the ever talented Craig Ferguson, pulls every trick in the book and ingratiates himself with Sean Connery's publicist, wonderfully played by Frances Fisher, who manages to open some doors for him. Along the way, he is snubbed by some Beverly Hills/Hollywood power types, including one of the competitors, an obnoxious Norwegian named Stig, who was the prior year's Platinum Scissors champion, played to perfection by David Rashe.pStill, the ever nice Crawford remains undaunted, and what he does to get into the competition is funny, especially when he starts fighting fire with fire. In a short time, Crawford becomes a force with which to be reckoned, and he finally gets his dearest wish and is allowed to compete. The competition itself is hysterical and will amaze and delight the viewer. This little known film is an absolute gem. Craig Ferguson's performance makes the character of Crawford MacKenzie totally endearing, and the supporting cast is, likewise, terrific. There are also a number of marvelous cameos, including Drew Carey playing himself. All in all, a bloody good show!
Hairdressers of the world unite! August 13, 2001 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Join me in proclaiming The Big Tease as one of the funniest mockumentary films you are ever liable to encounter. Watch as the fantastically camp Cameron Mackenzie cuts and bobs his way from Scotland to L.A. to enter the prestigious Platinum Scissors Award. It truly is a funny film with cracking performances by Craig Ferguson in the lead role and Chris Langham as the documentary maker who seems to be wondering if it will be worth it all in the end. And it is.
