Amazon.co.uk Review If you can get over its slightly far-fetched storyline, there's a lot of heart in ICrush/I. Three longstanding friends--Kate, the American headmistress (Andie MacDowell), Janine the police inspector (Imelda Staunton) and Molly, an acerbic, thrice-divorced GP (Anna Chancellor)--meet up each week to drown their sorrows with gin and cigarettes, with a prize box of caramels for the one who can report the most disastrous love life. It's this failure with men that has cemented their friendship, for in all other respects they're very different personalities. The cracks begin to show when Kate has a fling, developing into a love affair, with an ex-student 15 years her junior. When she announces that she's going to marry the sensitive and sexy Jed (fresh-faced Kenny Doughty, of whom we'll undoubtedly be seeing more), Molly and Janine are determined to put a stop to such foolishness. p We soon discover that, for all their raunchy talk, they're hidebound by convention, shocked by the difference in age and status and fuelled by jealousy. Their actions spark off a disastrous chain of events that give a vital grittiness to the film. Visually, it's a bit like stepping into a Trollope novel (Joanna, not Anthony), all Cotswold stone, clergy and quaint streets. But the strong dialogue and the conviction of performances from the three main characters (cast to excellent effect) make ICrush/I a deeply absorbing, bittersweet film. p BOn the DVD:/B ICrush/I is a good DVD package: not only do we have sharp sound and well-defined colour that brings out the best of the picturesque setting, but the extras are well put together. As well as theatrical trailer and scene selections, there's 25 minutes' worth of interviews with cast and director, a behind-the-scenes feature, a brief but riveting deleted scene, a featurette on the storyline, and the option to watch the film with or without the director's commentary, which is very enlightening. There are also details of other Film Four releases. --IHarriet Smith/I

Not quite the worst 'British' film ever... December 13, 2008 The only thing I can say for this is that it is not as bad as 'Death At A Funeral' or whatever the last great 'Four Weddings And A Funeral' rip-off was called. What is it with this genre of British film? Andie MacDowell seems to spend more of her life in ancient English churches than the Archbishop of Canterbury. If you think referring to an 'organ' is funny you may laugh once and watch it 'til the end but you'll feel hollow and used in the morning.

I had to look at the back of the DVD case to check when this film was made, as it was not clear when it was meant to be set. I thought it must be the early eighties judging from the long side split skirts Andie McDowell wore in every scene. She seemed to have a variety of floppy, floaty, nondescript outfits. Why a rebellious sexy young man would be interested in her I don't know. And I agree with DebB - she was a total hypocrite, hiding him away like a shameful secret. And what on earth did she see in her friends? They were unpleasant enough before, but what they do later in the film is truly awful. And yet she takes the view, hey never mind, friendship is what's important. And smoking yourself to death, obviously. The jokes and scenes were unforgivably derivative - it was apparently trying to be a depressing version of four weddings and a funeral. The worst thing though is that although it seemed as if it was meant to be set in the modern day, the characters acted like it was decades ago. A 25 year old with a woman in her forties being portrayed as very subversive and likely to shock the entire village. No-one blinks an eye about Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, quite rightly. To be fair I think this is entertaining enough to watch if (i) you're bored; (ii) you really have nothing else to read/watch/listen to; (iii) you're female (essential).
This made me so angry! August 14, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes this is a chick lit film. Yes its a story of female friendship and the importance of friends. Yes the friendship survives the trauma - but, but but. That poor man! She is ashamed of him, hides the relationship from most people, doesn't defend him, and then, when - I won't spoil it - the bad thing happens - she continues to deny him, and I imagine, will for ever more. More than that, the friends who destroy what she had are still her bosom buddies at the end. Well shame on her. I was annoyed with myself for watching to the end - but then I kept assuming she'd come through, show a little honesty, take a position - I love this man so sod the lot of you would have done me! br /A minor point - Ms McDowell is not the world's best actress - she does pretty well here but there are a few times when her lines fall so flat - Anna Chancellor and Imelda Staunton (and wossisname - you see even I haven't remembered who he is!) are great. In fact wossisname (wasn't he the big brother in Billy Elliott) is brill - what 40+ year old wouldn't want him!
Jerry Burns Angel July 11, 2006 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
I found the movie pleasent enough well written acted and directed, but I watched the movie mainly for the chance to here the Jerry Burns Track 'Angel' as the soundtrack album is so hard to get hold of. I was well rewarded this is a fabulous masterpiece of haunting emotional siren song that anyone who has heard anything else by Jerry Burns will havecome to expect from her. If you like this track why not get hold of a copy her debut album 'Jerry Burns' it may be hard to find but is is well worth it.[...] [...]
