Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Modern blockbuster cinema came of age with the release of three huge science fiction/fantasy extravaganzas in the late 1970s. In 1978 ISuperman/I was the last of these, a gigantic hit unfairly overshadowed by IStar Wars/I (1977) and IClose Encounters of the Third Kind/I (1977). Christopher Reeve is completely convincing as both Superman and mild-mannered alter ego Clarke Kent, sparking real chemistry with Margot Kidder's fellow reporter Lois Lane. Very much a film of two halves, the opening tells the origin of Superman from the apocalyptic fate of Krypton to his nostalgically rendered boyhood in the mid-West. After a wonderful sequence introducing the Fortress of Solitude the film changes gear as the adult Clarke Kent arrives in Metropolis and Superman battles arch-nemesis Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). Though the tone becomes lighter and introduces comedy, ISuperman/I succeeds because Donner plays the titular character straight. From Marlon Brando's heavyweight cameo to the surprisingly wrenching finale, ISuperman/I unfolds as an epic modern myth, a spiritual fable for a secular age and a fantastic entertainment for the young at heart. With breathtaking production design, still special effects, gorgeous cinematography, thrilling set-pieces, wit, romance and John Williams' extraordinarily rich music score, ISuperman/I has the power to make you believe a man can fly.pBOn the DVD:/B ISuperman/I is presented in an extended director's cut which adds eight minutes to the theatrical original. The restored material is so artfully integrated many viewers may not even notice, but it would have been nice to at least have the opportunity to watch the original via seamless branching. The sound has been remixed into extraordinarily powerful Dolby Digital 5.1--the superb main title sequence is worth the price alone--and the anamorphically enhanced 2.35:1 image is, except for some unavoidably grainy effects shots, pristine. The commentary by Richard Donner and writer Tom Mankiewicz reveals more about the background than all but the most dedicated fan will ever need to know, while film music aficionados will revel in the opportunity to listen to John Williams' score isolated in Dolby Digital 5.1. On the second side of the disc are a eight alternate John Williams music cues, a selection of deleted scenes and the screen tests of a variety of would-be Lois Lanes, introduced and with optional commentary by casting director Lynn Stalmaster. These are fascinating, and show how right for the part Margot Kidder really was. A DVD-ROM only feature presents the storyboards plus various Web features, while the real highlight is a 90-minute documentary divided into three sections covering pre-production, filming and special effects. The picture quality on all the extras is very good indeed. An enthralling package, DVD doesn't get much better than this. --IGary S Dalkin/I

5 out of 5 stars you believed a man could fly   March 20, 2008
superman the movie comes to dvd. one of the biggest movies of the 70's, this brought the dc comics character to the big screen. It runs for over two hours, taking most of the films first half to tell superman's origin story, and then once the character is established he has to deal with a plot from criminal genius lex luthor. br /br /Coming back to this, which I hadn't seen in a while, I was instantly struck by the superb jerry goldsmith score. the title music really goes with the character. and christopher reeve who took the lead - an unknown at the time - was superb, making his clark kent and superman two totally separate characters. margot kidder is an excellent lois lane, feisty and beautiful. gene hackman is pretty good as lex luthor although he's not really the strongest character in the movie. br /br /It's perhaps a little over long in the middle, some of the effects are date [obvious backscreen projection] but it's still one of the best comic book movies yet. br /br /the disc contains:br /br /ten deleted scenes - in two groups.br /br /a commentary from the director and one of the producers.br /br /three good and involved documentaries about the project, ranging in length from twenty three to thirty minutesbr /br /ten isolated music chapters: click on them to hear itbr /br /three screen test reels, introduced by the casting director. fascinating to view, and see those who didn't get the parts.br /br /an original cinema trailer and a tv ad for the movie from the same time.br /br /storyboards are also on it and can be viewed as dvd rom features. br /br /a great movie. and a pretty good package. be aware that - on my copy at any rate - it was a rather old dvd and you have to flip it over to the other side to access most of the features

5 out of 5 stars The best film... ever!   October 15, 2007
Not only is this the best superhero film, its the best film ever made. Yes, better than Star Wars.br /br /Its pure Hollywood. The producers arguing with their director, a delayed release date (Xmas 1978) and a cost of millions. But in the end it turned into a box office smash.br /br /Just how the producers got Oscar winners Brando, Hackman and Glenn Ford to star is a testament to how great the film is. And lets not forget Reeve, Kidder and Beatty. br /br /With a great soundtrack and picture this really is the best film ever made, and the extended version puts the icing on the cake. Brilliant!

4 out of 5 stars Miles better than the 2006 disaster!   August 5, 2007
I had only ever seen the TV version of the original Superman movie until I bought the HD DVD. So, as you can imagine, on TV it was in hideous pan and scan and with several scenes missing. In reality, I have never seen the 'full' movie until now. And I have to admit, it's far, far superior to Bryan Singer's self-indulgent mess of Superman Returns.br /br /It actually takes quite a while to get going, but there's so much going on that the running time certainly doesn't seem two and a half hours. Richard Donner shot it back to back with Superman II, so there's an extended opening act that establishes the plot of the sequel at the same time.br /br /Anyone who doesn't know the story of Superman must be from another galaxy, but for those people I will give you a quick soundbite. Kal El is the orphan of the planet Krypton, which has recently blown up. He comes to Earth as a baby and lands in Smallville where he is quickly adopted by a farmer and his wife and renamed Clark Kent. His dense molecular structure and his ability to defy Earth's gravity give him advantages over humans and ultimately he becomes...SUPERMAN! But who doesn't already know that?br /br /Clark Kent assumes an exaggerated, clumsy, meek newspaper reporter persona to distance himself from the Superman guise. Somehow everybody, including secret love Lois Lane, falls for it even though the glasses and the hair are all that is different. Hypervillain Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) doesn't take well to the man of steel as he might interfere with his plans for Real Estate Domination (the modern term for World Domination). But does he really think he can win? Hypervillains never know when to be humble.br /br /Just about everything that was terrible about Superman Returns is completely right about this one. The cinematography, the music, the editing, the pacing. I won't call the SFX fake, since it doesn't ever take you out of the film, so I'll just call them 'quaint'. For 1978 they're good and even though they are all done optically it's still better than the CGI crapfest of Singer's interpretation.br /br /Christopher Reeve's ultimate fate does kind of upset me, so it's good to see him in his prime and being made immortal in a way. The cast of this film does have a lot of big names. Along with the huge scope and spectacle, such a large cast adds to the epic feel of it. Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Ned Beatty, Margot Kidder, Terence Stamp and Glenn Ford just seem like a far more dynamic bunch of actors than Kate Bosworth and Kal Penn. Don't you think?br /br /It's been 29 years since this film was released and people still make a big fuss over it today. In 29 years, will be still be talking about Superman Returns? Outside of ridicule, I think not.br /br /The HD DVD features a nice 2.4:1 1080p transfer with Dolby Digital Plus sound and loads of extras.

4 out of 5 stars all time great but let down by the ego of marlon brando   September 29, 2006

superman is a classic,of that there is little argument,it is an adaption from the comic book and can be regarded as a major boxoffice success that generation from generation of viewer has embraced and rightly so as it is a magical film that i have loved as a child and man.br /The film stars chris reeve as the awkward clark kent and superman, who is cool, stylish and heroic and regardless of the fact that we all must show a level of disbelief in that people cant see that superman is clark and vice versa, can the removal of glasses and hair parted in other way fool people, this is still a cracking and pretty believable film, even if it can never be true.br /The films only fault is in the presence of marlom brando as supermans father who was paid millions for a cameo part such is his ego,he isnt that good and with his crap white hair looks like a right lemon, but thats a fault that cant ruin what is essentially a stormer.

5 out of 5 stars Super hero spectacular   June 17, 2006

Superman the movie is the best film adaptation of a comic book character since movie making began, it has rightfuly won a place in audiences hearts around the world with its mixed of romance, comedy and action. br /Superman has the pleasure of boasting a fantastic cast. Marlon Brando takes a brief but vey memorable role as Superman's father, Jor - El and is outstanding in his 10 minutes on screen. Gene Hackman is fiendishly brilliant as the evil Lex Luthor and Margo Kidder is a great Lois Lane. br /The man that shines from the rest in this epic is Superman himself, Christopher Reeve. Reeve injects a more human side into the man of steel and brillantly juggles the dual personas of Clark Kent and Superman making the audience believe that they are two different men. This is done with such ease by Reeve that it is hard to imagine anyone else in the role. br /Richard Donner makes us believe a man can fly thanks to the flying effects that won his team an oscar and John William's opening theme is unforgettable. br /Superman will always be a classic film and a landmark in comic book films in which other movies of it's kind will be comapared.
