Amazon.co.uk Review
IVictoria Wood with All the Trimmings/I contains exactly what it says on the box. Harking back to the classic BBC Christmas comedy specials of yesteryear, the show features a star-studded cast: Alan Rickman, Richard E Grant, Michael Parkinson, Bob Monkhouse, Hugh Laurie, Angela Rippon, Roger Moore, Caroline Aherne, the list goes on. The show takes a typically idiosyncratic canter through a dream set of telly programmes for Christmas Day. Thus we get expertly played skits of IA Christmas Carol/I (with Delia Smith as the cook); IBrassed Off/I (in which Tony Blair solves the North/South divide by declaring everything The South); IBrief Encounter/I (Parky as the station master, with a side order of drugs and lesbianism); a regency romantic drama (with the line "could you not stick your hand in your muff?") and lots more. What makes the production a true cut above, however, is the linking theme that takes a blatant pot shot at the modern BBC--or as Wood sees it--BBC Upmarket, BBC Downmarket, BBC Newmarket (for racing), BBC Makeover, BBC Takeover, etc. This is funny, cutting and achingly on the ball about the state of modern television.--IIan Watson/I

4 out of 5 stars worth digging out over the festive season   December 28, 2008
As it's unlikely to become a regular BBC Christmas repeat (the BBC seem to have a blind spot when it comes to Victoria Wood) my advice is to buy this if you're a fan. Stuffed with 'blink-and-you'll-miss-'em' cameo performances (Billie Piper, Michael Parkinson, Kathy Staff, Alan Titchmarsh... the list is endless), this one hour special screened over Christmas 2000 is a high budget costume and scenery extravaganza pastiching familiar TV and film genres (the period 'bodice ripper', Second World War newsreels, black and white classic films, Dickens, etc). Wood also takes a swipe at internal BBC structures such as its management and accountancy regime and its ever expanding digital 'platforms. As someone who's been on the BBC payroll for over two decades she's better placed than most to cast a jaundiced eye on the changes at the Corporation of late.br /Although lacking the classic oneliners of her earlier work there are plenty of giggles here. although the show ends with a pointless (and by now very dated) song and dance finale about Tory politicians (chiefly Anne Widdicombe). The outake 'extras' add nothing to the feast either. But all in all an intelligent and enjoyable momento from the days when Victoria Wood was one of the BBC's prize stars and central fixture of their Christmas programming.

Very different to her other one-woman shows on stage. Absolutely fabulous - all the cameo appearances made it a laugh a minute. Do buy it for Xmas

4 out of 5 stars ~ Funny ~   January 6, 2004

I bought it because of Alan Rickman, one of the guest stars - I've never seen anything from Victoria Wood before but I was really surprised how funny she is - it really is a laugh! However, sometimes I think you just have to have her sense of humour ... but anyway, I can only recommend it :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Why can't we have a series?!   August 26, 2002

Excellence from start to finish, probably Wood's most literate work so far that combines reference to Dickens with name dropping of teen pop idols. The overkill of celebrity cameos doesn't detract from the superb quality of the writing, while the lack of sketches to feature Julie Walters is the only real criticism of this special. On the acting front, Celia Imrie and Geraldine McEwan shine as does Wood herself, while the most impressive sketches are 'Brief Encounter', the wordy 'Plots and Proposals' and inspired ER spoof, 'WI'. The parodies are far more intelligent than recent French and Saunders offerings and the quality of this one-off programme makes the viewer long for a series. Sheer billiance and very Christmassy.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly   December 18, 2001

...this Christmas offering from Victoria Wood is absolutely heavenly. From a wonderful take-off of Brief Encounter to the inspired finale, this will provide the perfect tonic to those impending long winter evenings which "tradition" requires you to spend talking to your elderly relatives about what life was like during the war.pEnjoy the programme (don't bother watching the "out-takes" - they're simply not funny). Definitely one of Ms Wood's triumphs, almost eclipsing the seminal Acorn Antiques.
