Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
In IThe Acid House/I director Paul McGuigan adapts three Irvine Welsh short stories. These are set in an unflinchingly depicted world of grey, breeze block tenements, wiry psychos, short leather skirts, beer, fags and drugs, kinky sex in badly wallpapered lounges, random violence, hideous-looking babies, raves, footy, discarded crisp packets and barely intelligible dialogue featuring the occasional use of non-profanity.p"The Granton Star Clause" tells the unhappy tale of wee, pasty-faced Boab Doyle, who in one long, unhappy sequence loses his place in the football team, his girlfriend, his job and gets kicked out of the house by his parents, before an encounter with God (here, a hard-bitten, lager-quaffing Maurice Roeves) leads to a surreal, Kafka-esque conclusion. The second tale, "A Soft Touch", is gruellingly and well portrayed but pointlessly depressing. Kevin McKidd plays Johnny, a supermarket employee with an appalling slag-hag of a girlfriend who takes up with his new, violently psychotic and parasitical neighbour Larry. Will he stand up for himself? The answer will leave you thoroughly unsatisfied. Finally, there's "The Acid House", the funniest but silliest of the three tales in which Ewan Bremner plays an obnoxiously livewire Hibs fan who takes one too many tabs and ends up being transported into the mind of stereotypically middle-class couple's--Martin Clunes and Jemma Redgrave--baby. pIThe Acid House/I is compulsive but bleak, exhilarating but ambivalent. The viewer is asked to bring their own moral compass to these stylised yet non-judgemental episodes. Fans of ITrainspotting/I, however, will certainly find much of the scintillating same here.pBOn the DVD:/B disappointingly, only the trailer is featured here. However, the DVD transfer in letterbox format is impeccable, used to its best advantage in the more surreal, fast-cut music video-style sequences, while the soundtrack, featuring The Verve and Primal Scream among others, also benefits. --IDavid Stubbs/I

3 out of 5 stars It Sure Didn't Seem Like A Sequel For Trainspotting   October 11, 2008
Acid House is not for the faint hearted, it is graphic in so many different ways. I found the idea of three short stories intriguing although I presumed there would be some linkages between the three films, there is none whatsoever, they're just three short films compiled into one film purely for a commercialized advantage, that the only way the screenplays could be seen as a proper film was by being one. br /I think the Scottish Brit flicks are of an acquired taste, if you aren't so fond of Scottish accents the film will great on you immensely.br /Although Acid House was referred to as a Trainspotting sequel, I don't see how, the same charcters aren't even used maybe people thought because it's about drugs is set in Scotland that makes it a Trainspotting sequel. The main similarity between the two films is the use of two actors from Trainspotting (Ewan Bremner- Spud the guy that played Tommy.) br /My favourite of the three sections of the film is the last, its so weird unerving yet hilarious, it outshines the other two put together in my opinion. br /I'd recommend this to any die-hard, Brit flick or Trainspotting fan, otherwise don't bother.

4 out of 5 stars Mad but also very funny !   August 19, 2005
Three very different short stories! Not a sequel to trainspotting, as has already been mentioned, but worth watching if you are a fan of that type of hard hitting shocking flim. I wasn't as keen on the first short story, as i was on the final two, the second story, "A Soft Touch" features Kevin McKidd as Jonny, who's just about the softest touch you can imagine. His performance in this film reinforced what a talented versatile actor this man is. You would never believe that the same person who plays such a doormat in this film also played headstrong sword weilding hardman Bothwell, in Gunpowder, Treason Plot. brThe last of the short stories, "The Acid House" was also good, was also easily the most comical of the three films. Ewan Bremner plays a pill popping acid taking raver who gets struck by lightening whilst on a 'trip' gets transported into the body of a middle class yuppie couples baby! You have to see it to believe it!

3 out of 5 stars good in parts   May 3, 2005
I bought this DVD in a second hand shop having read the book and my expectations were high. Having watched it, the same goes as with many other book turned films, it just didn't live up to them.pThe comedy value here is probably what wins this film a half decent review. 'Larry', the twisted character in 'A Soft Touch' is nothing short of hilarious, if you are willing enough to see past his evil side. The thing is though, he is exactly like the majority of psychos I have ran into over the years - so lifelike it really smacks you in the face.p'Coco Bryce' they character in the final short film is another comical genius. The sequence at the end with the Hibs boys in the pub and the fans on the street really is the best bit of cinema in the full film, the sound on it quite breathtaking. All in all however, I personally think it was a mistake making this into a film, as the idea of three short stories together really doesn't work considering the stories aren't really film material. If they had waited until 'Porno' and made a sequence to Trainspotting this may have been a far better idea. pI you have seen this film and haven't read the book don't write it off, the book is well worthy of five stars.

3 out of 5 stars Granton Star Rules!   February 18, 2005
2 out of 3 found this review helpful

I hadn't read the Irvine Welsh book from which this movie is based. A friend of mine though said that he thought 'The Granton Star Cause' was one of the best short stories he ever read and of the 3 stories within this film it certainly works the best. The 'Granton Star Cause' creates a big impact in the guise of a modern fable. Add to that the satirical nature of the policemen's investment, God's theological justifications and Nick Cave's brooding, melancholic soundtrack and you wonder why more filmmakers (indeed writers for that matter) don't incorporate more traditional story-telling elements in their work. p'A Soft Touch' proves to be morbidly depressing, while 'The Acid House' story itself just works as an extended pop video. All in all it doesn't work as a full feature, the remaining 2 stories develop as a huge anti-climax to the magnificent and insightful narrative of the first. Watch just for 'The Granton Star Cause'.

4 out of 5 stars mad but funny   January 17, 2005

This film contains three short stories each very different. the first story was ok funny in parts. The second was disturbing and not funny but the third was hilarious. Worth watching even if only for the last short story. Not like trainspotting.
