Amazon.co.uk Review
On paper, IThe Royle Family/I doesn't sound that promising: a working-class family from Manchester sit in their cluttered living room, watch the telly and argue over domestic details (the arrival of a telephone bill, for instance, provides the big dramatic event of the first episode, which aired in September 1998). But from such small everyday incidents, IRoyle Family/I creators Caroline Aherne and Dave Best (who play young couple Denise and Dave) have crafted one of the most successful shows on British television--a comedy about the joys and frustrations of family life that's warm, honest and very, very funny. It's Britain's answer to IThe Simpsons/I, whose success the show rivalled when it started broadcasting on BBC2 (the programme jumped channels to BBC1 for its second series). p Now in its third series, IThe Royle Family/I has seen its characters develop like real folk. Denise and Dave got married and now have a little sprog; Barbara starts menopause (how many sit-coms are brave enough to use that for laughs?) and Denise's kid brother Anthony shakes off his surly adolescence when he turned 18 in series two. Unlike Oasis--who provide the shows theme song "Halfway Round the World"--this programme just keeps getting better.p But no soap--not even IBrookside/I in its dafter moments--has one-liners as brilliantly crafted as IThe Royle Family/I's. Slouched in his armchair, Jim's dour running commentary on the TV shows that are on at the time are particularly priceless. IChanging Rooms/I, for instance, boils down to "a cockney knocking nails into plywood... Is this what it's come to?" Not quite; as long as the IRoyle Family/I are around, there is something worthwhile to watch. --IEdward Lawrenson/I

What more can i say?.brAgain im not disapointed with the royels and the 3rd series of their family saga.brJim is bloody great in his attitude on life and the way anthony makes the tea and makes the whole family bacon sandwiches has me roaring with laughter ..brThe royels are definatley my class of people i recomend this series specialy cos granada and BBC have included the christmas special which many series on DVD have removed and put them on seperate discs.brClassic and very real life something i will watch over and over again .brMy friends at Amazon UK have once again provided the best service to the USA which is why i keep ordering and ordering.brSo i give Amazon 10 stars out of five for their promt and fantastic service.brI will be hunting around for the royels 1st series which seems to have been deleted also im soon going to be ordering the last trilogy of only fools and horses of coarse from Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Biting social commentary but with warmth and   August 2, 2004

The ironically-titled Royle Family is, as the theme music says, 'half a world away' from the contrived nonsense of most sitcoms. What separates it is the canny writing, understated dialogue and, above all, the subtlety of the characters and the actors playing them. There is no unrealistic premise: what you see on the screen is what you would see if you sat discretely in the corner of the Royle's loungeroom. Each of the characters is intrinsically flawed but not so that they become ugly or unwatchable. Father Jim is a wise-cracking couch potato, willing to let his wife bring in the money and run the house, but still content to criticise everything before him. Wife Barbara sustains the family but lacks worldliness, making excuses for the incredibly idle daughter Denise. Jobless son Anthony is a "lazy little sod" who is conversely the family gopher, while Nana is an ageing drunken old moaner constantly angling to move in, much to Jim's disgust. Gormless son-in-law Dave and occasional visitors Cheryl, Twiggy, Mary, Joe and Darren make up the rest of the household traffic. Much of the comedy in The Royle Family comes from what is left unsaid: the face-pulling, knowing looks, pregnant pauses and vacant moments where they stare numbly at the TV. And although there is a depressing tone stemming from the Royle's situation and idleness, occasional moments of family warmth and togetherness peek through. The Royle Family has the cruel social commentary of Married, with Children but laced with much more realism and affection.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Classic   September 26, 2003

I love this show. The first time I saw this I was 14 and I was shocked at how good this show was. I live in America and the shows we have here are awful! Some shows are good but not like this show. I saw this on BBC America about a year ago, and then they took it off the air. I then hoped it was on DVD and it wasn't. Please can you air this show again on BBC America, or release this to the States. I know a ton of people who would buy this in a second. This show is painfully good and paved the way for a show like "The Office". A real gem!!!

5 out of 5 stars The series just keeps getting better   September 11, 2003

It cannot be easy to write and produce a comedy series that keeps getting better and better. But the authors of The Royle Family have managed just that. The setting remains the same, the characters too but the biting wit keeps coming. pI continue to rate this series up amongst the all time greats of British comedy.
