Amazon.co.uk Review IRat Race/I ought to be far less enjoyable than, in the end, it is. Studded with C-list stars, it has a heartless and derivative premise: a group of no-hopers racing across country for a stash of money for the amusement of a casino owner (John Cleese) and a group of high rollers who will bet on anything. Yet their adventures along the way are inventive: for example, lost in the desert Cuba Gooding Jr ends up stealing a coach only to find it full of Lucille Ball impersonators who go "Waaah!" in chorus whenever anything goes wrong. Even the slapstick is inventive: director Jerry IAirplane/I Zucker and writer Andy Breckman do interesting things with hot-air balloons, a narcoleptic Rowan Atkinson, emergency organ transporters and Hitler's Mercedes Benz. All of the characters, from Breckin Meyer's smugly careful lawyer to Seth Green's shabby little con man, discover in the end that they have hearts, that some things are more important than money and that sometimes it is the journey that matters. Of course, these are all colossal sentimental cliches and yet the film has a sweet-natured quality that sells them to us. p BOn the DVD:/B IRat Race/I is presented with a widescreen aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and Dolby 5:1 sound that delivers all of the snappy dialogue clearly. It comes with generous extras, including a gag reel, the theatrical trailer, an outtake where Seth Green completely fails to keep a straight face, a good-humoured interview with writer and director, a disappointing making-of documentary and some deleted scenes (with a couple that should not be missed). --IRoz Kaveney/I

wonderful slapstick November 2, 2008 Having watched this film a good half dozen times, I just wanted to say how refreshing it is to be able to watch a Saturday night slapstick which does not involve sex gags, gormless teenagers or even worse, high school students. I would however take the Amazon reviewer to task about the "c-list" stars. If John Cleese, Whoopi Goldberg and Rowan Atkinson are C-list, I'd like to know who's on your "a-list". There's a time and a place for everything, and if you want something light and distracting, this is perfect. We can't all watch "Schindler's List" all the time. Even thinking about this film brings a smile to my face.
Brilliant film - full of laugh-out-loud moments March 4, 2008 Although Rat Race is a fairly simple idea, it is a hugely entertaining film that is guaranteed to make you laugh. It has a good director in Jerry Zucker and an excellent cast in the likes of John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson, Whoopi Goldberg, Jon Lovitz, Breckin Meyer, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Seth Green. Basically, the film starts in Las Vegas and casino millionaire Donald Sinclair (John Cleese) is giving away $2 Million to whoever gets to Silver City, New Mexico first. The contestants do things such as stopping off at a 'Barbie Museum', driving a bus full of Lucille Ball look-alikes, stealing a rocket car and displacing a human heart on the way to their destination. If you haven't seen it already, Rat Race is definitely worth watching and possibly buying on Amazon.co.uk.
Just a decent laugh! January 18, 2008 This film isn't edgey, it doesn't use state-of-the-art special effects and that is part of what makes it a joy to watch. It isn't interested in bagging an oscar, just providing its audience with entertainment. There are laughs for all the family and humour for all! (the adult jokes will most likely pass right over the kiddies heads!) This film brings back the good old fashioned chase movie, revitalising it with a great cast such as Whoopi Goldberg (Ghost), John Cleese (Fawlty Towers) and Rowan Atkinson (Blackadder). It is a good watch and I would encourage you all to buy it.br /br /WARNING! MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WITH NO SENSE OF HUMOUR!br /
Could have been good October 11, 2007 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
if they had replaced the entire cast (especially Atkinson doing his pathetic Mr Bean type `comedy') re-wrote the script and given it a better storyline. This is almost as bad as the HBO/BBC series `Rome', and has fewer laughs. Shame on Cleese for doing this rubbish. Tom Cruise sucks as well. (He's not in this film I just hate him)
Great Idea Done Cheaply September 17, 2007 Rat Race is basically an attempt to bring back the madcap-ensemble-cast-comedy that was so successful in the sixties, and again in the eighties. There are two problem here, firstly the cast (of C-listers and down-on-their-luck B-Listers) isn't strong enough and secondly the script is no where near funny enough...why the hell didn't they get Jerry Zucker (who directed anyway) to write the thing? You cannot tell me that Andy Breckman has a better pedigree, Zucker wrote Airplane and Naked Gun for crissakes, Breckman's most successful scripy was Arthur 2...what a stupid, stupid decision. br /Films like "Cannonball Run" and "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world" were excellent because of the brilliant casting; writing and ad-libbing that went on. The whole films just felt like a joyous celebration of idiocy and everyone seemed to be having such an excellent time that it became infectious. Aside from a couple of amusing jokes involving elevated cows there is nothing to laugh about here and certainly no chemistry evident amongst the actors. br /I'd love to see a new madcap adventure along these lines but you need people like Mel Gibson, George Clooney, Lee Evans and Amanda Peet onboard...it needs to feel special. I really think that - had Rat Race - been done properly it could have been massive. Come on...someone do it! br /
