Amazon.co.uk Review
IThe Good Life/I has proved an enduring jewel in the BBC's mainstream comedy archive. More than 25 years after it first appeared in our living rooms, nostalgia must be a major reason for its appeal. A whole generation of young men--and their fathers--found the weekly sight of Felicity Kendal as Barbara Good, pert in denim dungarees, irresistible. But it's the quality of the playing that has really stood the test of time and triumphs over a premise--self-sufficiency in Surbiton--that now seems naive. Even in 1975, a Tom Good (a masterpiece of comic eccentricity from Richard Briers) quitting the rat race would probably have sold up his semi and chanced his luck as a small holder somewhere more remote than suburban Surrey.p Comic tensions arise not just from the Goods' daily struggle to beat the system on their own terms, but also from the relationship with their incredulous, often horrified, but usually supportive neighbours. Penelope Keith's Margo Leadbetter remains one of the great comic creations in British sitcom history--a simmering volcano of conservatism waging her own battle against creeping mediocrity in all aspects of life, whose human frailty somehow keeps her loveable. Paul Eddington as Jerry, her long-suffering husband, spars splendidly. These are happy memories indeed. --IPiers Ford/I

3 out of 5 stars Not the best series but still fun in parts   January 23, 2006

Series 4 is the weakest of the programme but still has moments. Anniversary, Sweet and Sour Charity are the two best of the bunch.

Season 4 of "the good life" is as mentioned in another review, not the best episodes of the series as a whole. However there is still much laughter to be had. This season wipes the floor with most "comedy" programmes of today, the chemistry between characters and the quality of acting is second to none.pIt is still a must have DVD purchase as there are plenty of episodes to get your teeth in, and the behind the scenes of the Royal episode make it worth the money alone.

2 out of 5 stars The Good Life has seen Better Life   February 7, 2002

Oh dear, this series was well past its best by the time that this fourth series came out. There's none of the classic moments such as Margot falling over when helping to bring the harvest in or problems with windbreaks.pLike many series that go on too long, by this time it had become almost a parody of itself and was nothing like as funny as the earlier episodes. This was probably because the novelty of the situation had diminished. What started off as a novel concept was now well worn and they appreared to be struggling for funny original storylines.pThe Good Life is regularly repeated on the television so I would advise passing on this collection and watching the more classic episodes being aired or purchasing some of the earlier series on video.pOn the plus side, it does have the rarely seen Royal Command Performance and the charm of Felicity Kendall, who is at her best when fretting over leaving her animals in the tender care of Margot when they go away in the first episode. It also contains an interview with Bob Larbey, one of the creators of the series.pIf you are a fan of the series, however and want to complete your collection, this is excellent value, containing about 4 and a half hours of material.
