Roundly dismissed as one of Steven Spielberg's least successful efforts, this very underrated film poignantly follows the World War II adventures of young Jim (a brilliant Christian Bale), caught in the throes of the fall of China. What if you once had everything and lost it all in an afternoon? What if you were only 12 years old at the time? Bale's transformation, from pampered British ruling-class child to an imprisoned, desperate, nearly feral boy, is nothing short of stunning. Also stunning are exceptional sets, cinematography and music (the last courtesy of John Williams) that enhance author J.G. Ballard's and screenwriter Tom Stoppard's depiction of another, less familiar casualty of war. In a time when competitors were releasing "comedic", derivative coming-of-age films, IEmpire of the Sun/I stands out as an epic in the classic David Lean sense--despite confusion or perceived competition with the equally excellent IThe Last Emperor/I (also released in 1987, and also a coming-of-age in a similar setting). It is also a remarkable testament to, yes, the human spirit. I just watched this movie, I was just so amazed with Bale, how beautifully he carried that movie on his shoulders with a very stunning performance!! It's a very great and moving movie, and one shouldn't think that it's as old as it is! Well, really all I can say is that this one to watch!

This film is not ordinary or a typical war drama. Don't expect glossy hollywood trappings. Well, what can you expect? You can expect supreme acting, especially of the the young Christian Bales. You can expect excellent and dramatic visuals. You can expect what amounts to the most amazingly true story ever seen on the screen through the eyes of a child. You can expect Steven Spielberg's best production to date. What you can expect is a visual spectacular that will emotionally challenge you.

Absolutely awesome film, very much underated.. If anything watch It for the action plane scene around the camp. I find it hard to believe it was filmed in 1987

watched this film last night with the wife and 15 year old son. all like to watch films found the film ok but can get a bit strange at times also can be a bit slow in parts. Not the best steven spielberg film for me although good acting by a very young christian bail ( new batman)

An amazing tale of the child's view of war. One of my favourite books and easily my favourite film. I recommend this to anyone with heart, consideration and understanding of the human cost of battle
