Amazon.co.uk Review
One of the best romantic comedies of the 1990s, IMy Best Friend's Wedding/I not only gave Julia Roberts a delightful vehicle for her crowd-pleasing comeback, but it further distinguished itself by avoiding the conventional plotting of the genre. Julia plays a prominent Chicago restaurant critic whose best friend (Dermot Mulroney) is a former lover from her college days with whom she'd made a binding pact: if neither of them were married by the age of 28, they'd marry each other. Just when they're about to reach the deadline of their agreement, Mulroney arrives in Chicago to introduce Roberts to his seemingly perfect fiancee (Cameron Diaz) and announce their wedding in just three days. That leaves the shocked Julia with just three short days to sabotage the wedding and marry the man she now realises she's loved all along. With potential heartbreak waiting in the wings, she'll either get what she wants or pay the price for her selfish behaviour, and Ronald Bass's cleverly constructed screenplay keeps us guessing to the very end. Rupert Everett scored rave reviews for his scene-stealing performance as Robert's gay friend who goes along with her scheming (but only so far), and even as she makes her character's needy desperation disarmingly appealing, Roberts wisely allows Diaz to capitalise on her charming time in the spotlight. As the romantic outcome remains uncertain, the viewer is held in a state of giddy suspense, and director PJ Hogan pulls off some hilarious scenes (like a restaurant full of people singing the Dionne Warwick hit "I Say a Little Prayer") that could easily have fallen flat in the hands of a less talented filmmaker. It's no surprise that this was one of the box-office smashes of 1997. I--Jeff Shannon/I

There are two "making-of" documentaries, one produced by HBO and the other a general behind the scenes mix of fly on the wall footage and interviews with cast and crew. Masquerading as helpful hints for the soon to be wed there's also a short featurette called "Wedding Do's and Don'ts". You can also sing along with one of the film's more bizarre moments; the fish restaurant rendition of "Say a Little Prayer", check out the pictures in the wedding album and read the filmographies. --IKristen Bowditch/I

5 out of 5 stars Sheer entertainment.   March 23, 2008
This is a great film, funny, girly, a little bit mean at times, but great. I have to say that Rupert Everett totally steals this film from Julia Roberts and co. He is wonderful!! The scene where they are all sat at the table, and they start singing Arethas' 'Say A Little Prayer' is an absolute classic, and has me in stitches!! He is so dry and acerbic, and so very funny. I want him for my friend!! Julia Roberts, is of course, excellent, as are Cameron Diaz and Dermot Mulroney, but for me, it is definitely Ruperts' film!! I love it.

3 out of 5 stars worth seeing but it lacks punch   September 13, 2007
My Best Friend's Wedding is interesting to watch throughout its durationbr /of 101 minutes but it is not laugh-out-loud funny or very involving from the romance point of view. The last ten minutes are original and quite moving and uplifting. The beautiful locations around Chicago are worth seeing in themselves and the extras section has interviews with Julia Roberts,Cameron Diaz,Rupert Everett and Dermot Mulroney.

4 out of 5 stars Rupert Everett eclipses both Diaz and Julia Roberts   May 23, 2007

The film redeems itself tremendously in the form of Rupert Everett as George. It does helps that he has some of the best scenes and lines, and his finesse and charisma makes it work so well - almost too well. He steals every scene he's in with ease, and created some great moments ... most notably the infectious dining scene where he leads the whole restaurant into a catchy song, and then near the end where he has his little talk with Julia and leads her out to the dance floor.

It's been a while since I've seen this but I can say that it is a fantastic movie! br /br /It's a romance comedy. Rupert Everett is hilarious! br /I loved the characters. The storyline is basically that julia roberts realises she is in love with her best friend but he is getting married in 3 days so she has 3 days to sabotage the wedding. The ending was sad because I've been in the situation when I loved someone who is taken. It depends how you look at it.

3 out of 5 stars THREE ACT PLAY WITH ONE GOOD ACT IN IT   August 24, 2006

What an exaggeration. Who can believe that professional food critic, Julianne Potter's (unevenly played by J. Roberts) treachery and sociopathology adopted by this character to kidnap her boyfriend (unspectacularly played by Dermot Mulroney) on the eve of his wedding to Perfect Miss America (well played by the pretty verging on gorgeous Cameron Diaz)? Well so much for the writing.br /br /However, hidden by the not entirely banal humor, I "discovered" a gem of a sub-plot involving Julianne's confidante and guru George, a homosexual. This segment of the film (I'll call it the Second Act) was both refeshingly well written and also brilliantly acted by Rupert Everett. He was convincing and just terrific ... Academy Award thespian quality. What I enjoyed is how without cliches and cheap shots at gays, in fact George's "special" sexual orientation and senistivity to relationships was portrayed as a strength ... rather than something to be ridiculed. Most gay roles in films tend to exploit exaggerations of the gay stereotype. I make this observation as a conventionally straight male. br /br /Meanwhile, Everett acted the role with dignity and marvelous control, and when he and Roberts acted together in scenes during the middle of the film (absurdly pretending to be engaged, calculated to make Mulroney's character jealous) the humor flowed.br /br /Perhaps there was some kind of special chemistry betwen Roberts and Everett that made them shine when they acted together in this film. But, alas, there wasen't enough of this chemical to go around. Overall, this was an O.K. but not a good (never mind excellent) movie.
