5 out of 5 stars "You will HAVE... NO... BRAIN!" "I don't need it."   March 16, 2008
This is without doubt one of my all-time favourite movies. See a young Teri Hatcher (Desperate Housewives), Robert Downey Jr, Sally Field, Kevin Kline and Whoopi Goldberg make the best of a sharply written, funny script. br /br /Where films like Scary Movie parody particular scenes in films, this parodies the whole genre of glossy, trashy, over-the-top American daytime soap operas. At the daytime TV awards we get to see the arc that Sally Field's Celeste Talbert has gone through in the space of a year - comatose, close to death, imprisoned in a South American jail, reunited with a long-lost daughter... and while to her face her fellow cast members are all sweetness and light, behind her back, they're trying everything they can to get rid of her. All the main characters have big skeletons in their closets, not least the buxom blonde Montana Moorhead (Cathy Moriarty) who teases David (Downey Jr) with the promise of wild sex if only he will get rid of Celeste. br /br /Into the mix we have thrown Elisabeth Shue as Celeste's niece, desperate to become a star, and Kevin Kline, an unpleasant blast from the past for Celeste. His character had been killed - decapitated - 20-odd years before, but managed to put his own head back on in a pioneering operation. Yes, it IS that ridiculous, but it's also extremely funny. There are so many funny lines in this film ("She has more lines than I do and she's a GODDAMN MUTE!") that it will keep you chuckling the whole way through. br /br /There's also a Moving Wallpaper/Echo Beach moment when we see Carrie Fisher auditioning hopeful young actors, shirtless, for a part.br /br /I love this film unreservedly

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious to say the least.   April 11, 2006

This movie is an all star cast funny comedy. The movie is about the work and relationships of casts on a popular soap opera on TV. Aside from the comedy, the producers did a good job of showing what real life for the stars could be like. This is like a look behind the scenes of what happens on film sets. The back stabbing antics of co-stars, each trying to bring the other down in other to ascend / shine and the lies that stars have to tell in order to keep their public image. I guess we can all appreciate that the same kind of politics goes on in some offices and other work places. What I found most interesting was that despite several plots by some of the characters to bring down the lead actress (played by Sally Fields' character) because she had won so many awards and remained a fan favorite, their plots always backfired and if anything increased her popularity and rating, which gave me a lot of satisfaction, because I don't think that anyone should ascend or shine by pulling others down. What will be will be, you just have to keep working hard without harming others in the process and your time will come. You will love the plotting and the scheming and the twisting of the plot. It is hilarious and funny. Great comedy, I recommend

5 out of 5 stars A Neglected Gem   October 5, 2003

I saw this in a free cinema preview a week before its release, and laughed almost non-stop. The writing is sharp, the premise witty and the actors seems to really be enjoying their roles. I've never really understood why this film isn't better known - at this price, just buy it on the off chance and have a look. I'd be surprised if you don't find yourself agreeing with me.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious remains of the '80s   August 26, 2002

This film is truly funny. The acting capability of Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Elisabeth Shue, Whoopi Goldberg etc. is well known - and the script is made with intelligent sense of the soap opera reality. The details of the soap opera in the film will make you laugh, the self centered egos of the soap's "stars" will make you fall down your chair and the plot itself will make you go over the top laughing, as the actors themselves. "Soapdish" is a funny but forgotten gem. I warmly recommend it to anyone who loves a clean and wild satire. It is simply awsome and gets better every time you watch it!
