Amazon.co.uk Review The premise of ILove Potion No. 9/I--that a magic potion makes the user irresistible to the opposite sex--could be the setup for the crassest sex farce imaginable. Instead, this film is a surprisingly subtle romantic comedy. Nebbishy scientist Paul (Tate Donovan) goes to a Gypsy fortune teller (Anne Bancroft), who tells him she sees no women in his entire life. To make up for this depressing news, she gives him a few drops of a love potion--number 8. Paul, a biochemist, scoffs; but when his pet cat accidentally gets a taste and attracts every female cat in the neighborhood, he enlists fellow dweeby scientist Diane (Sandra Bullock) to analyse it. After experimenting on monkeys, they decide to test it on themselves; soon Diane is being pursued by handsome Italians in the street and comes close to marrying the Prince of England (Isic/I), while Paul gets a little revenge on a woman who previously rejected him, then embarks on his own love spree. Shortly they discover that they really want each other; but before they can get married, an old boyfriend of Diane returns with his own dose of love potion number 8. Paul's only hope is to get something even more powerful. ILove Potion No. 9/I is genuinely clever and sweet, and both Donovan and Bullock work well with the low-key but effective humour of the movie's well-written script. It's a tribute to her talent and her girl-next-door looks that Bullock, unlike most pretty stars dressing down, is effective as both a lovelorn loser and the confident glamour-girl she becomes. Altogether, a charming and enjoyable film.--IBret Fetzer, Amazon.com/I

It sounds like love October 14, 2007 The movie is the visualization of the popular song.br /br /Paul Matthews (Tate Donovan) is not that popular with the ladies. He mostly concentrated on his work with primates. One day on a whim he is encouraged to seek a gypsy whom can tell his fortune. In the process she spots his deficiency and prescribes love potion number eight (only in diluted form). He become popular with the opposite sex and aggravated the same sex. br /br /Naturally this discovery is too important to keep to him self; so he recruits a colleague, Diane Farrow (Sandra Bullock). After some monkeying around, the get down to scientific work, he in the girls dorm, she with the prince of England, Prince Geoffrey (Dylan Baker). br /br /Soon they discover their true love but as with real life it gets complicated. Eventually this called for love potion number 9.br /

Largely Forgettable, But Enjoyable to Watch. August 13, 2004 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
"Lvoe Potion No. 9", inspired by the song of the same name, sounds like on of the worst films ever made. However, the film is quite sweet and has a few laugh-out-loud moments, and will be a pleasant way to spend a few hours.brThe film tells the story of a two scientist dweebs (Tate Donavan Sandra Bullock)who discover a love potion. This potion allows them to become irresistable to the opposite sex simply by speaking. Problems then arrive when other people get hold of the potion.brThe tempo of the film is a reasnoably upbeat, fast pace and this succeeds in keeping the audiences attention throughout, without it ever getting too boring or stupid. Don't get me wrong, the film doesn't take itself seriously at all, and at moments their are some quiet low humour, a scene with chimps in comes to mind. However, these don't succeed in ruining the film. The final picture of the film is a glossy romantic comedy.brHowever that is all. Although enjoyable, the film doesn't not deliver anything special, new, poiyant or particularly grabbing. I watched the film a few days ago, and I'm confident that soon it will fade into obscurity and only this review will remind of it.brSandra Bullock provides yet another performance of the same character that we seen in all her films, but in fairness this is a film pre-speed and so at them moment of shooting didn't have the rest of her films to base her performance on. Tate Donavan provides an adequate perfomance, but won't succeed in "wowing" anyone. However, the on screen chemistry between the two is very tender and sweet, and probably will deserve a little "awwww" when the inevitable happens at the end of the film.br"Love Potion No.9" is a entertaining rom-com that will succeed in making you laugh and have a pleasant experience. However, the film doesn't provide anything you won't experinece in other films of it's type, and you will sound place it at the back of your mind never to resurface again.
Average film, Not Bullocks Best March 26, 2002 6 out of 11 found this review helpful
Loser in love Paul (Donovan)is a biochemist who is given a bottle of love potion no.8 by a gypsy. He confides in equally geeky comparative pscho-biologist(!!) Diane (Bullock), who he secretly fancies. The two oddballs test the potion on themselves and immediately become attractive to members of the oppposite sex and they take full advantage of this! They meet up and look set to live happily ever after, until Diane suddenly says she's in love with her ex-lover, but all isn't as it seems and only love potion no. 9 offers Paul any chance of winning her back.pEnjoyable at times, but average performances from the two leads and a bland ending indicate why this film isn't particularly well known.
