Amazon.co.uk Review IRoad House/I is one of those movies that helped usher out the era of action films that had feasible plot lines (and also helped reverse the direction of Patrick Swayze's career arc). Swayze stars as Dalton: a handsome, existential bouncer who owns both a degree in philosophy and a Mercedes and that's perhaps the most believable aspect of the whole movie. Dalton runs afoul of Wesley (Ben Gazzara), the meanest SOB round these parts, by taking up with his former girlfriend, Doc (Kelly Lynch)--the only woman in town with an IQ approaching double digits, even if she had unfathomably hooked up with such a lowlife. Swayze had complained about being typecast as beefcake when this was made, but that didn't stop him from revealing as much skin as possible. It's so insulting to its audience that it's nice to be able to turn the tables and laugh at the filmmakers.--IDavid Kronke, Amazon.com/I

just take it for what it is: an action movie December 22, 2008 I think Road House is certainly a cult movie: strong action,a bit of "Western mocie style" heroism of good against evil, some hero stuff...Sure, it was not meant to be deep like an Oscar nomination but it has been deep enough to appreciate the American hero that can change the balance of good against bad if he goes for it...It is not all countries that, even in a movie, a hero stands for the people (as quite some do not evenm stand for people's rights itself).br /br /Road House is a cult movie for guys that dig the concept of being your own man and standing against bullies...just be cool and accept it...
Best Worst Film Of The Year (1989) June 10, 2008 Nothing special to add to all the other ambivalent encomia already shovelled onto this mess of a film. Lots of good ingredients that add up to nothing but unintended laughs.br /br /Fast cars, explosions, naked chicks for the guys, naked Swayze for the girls (and for Swayze himself), and of course, superb fight sequences. The story and the total absence of police are simply ludicrous. br /br /Funny thing is, when Dalton's bouncer-mentor turns up to help, about halfway through the movie, he's so much cooler than Dalton you want to skip the plot and just tag along with him. An opportunity wasted.br /br /Definitely one to put with other films you reckon are good because they're bad.
Two Hour Stimulation Pill December 14, 2007 Road House is one of those films you spend about two hours watching and never really understand what is happening but you're too entertained to care. It is about Dalton (Swayze), the greatest bouncer, who has come to a small road house to instill order. He cleans up the bar's poor crop of bouncers and manages to fall in love with the town doctor. All the while, pissing off the local crime boss. Monster trucks, tons of breasts, kung fu, and a blind guitarist later, you still don't have to think to be amused.
I HATE ACTION MOVIES April 24, 2007 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
but this one has to be admired, revered, even as it has everything that an entertaining film should have. no, it's not intellectual and the acting's crap and the storyline is in my opinion pretty much the same as every other action movie in existence, but it has a hero with elvis hair who is still cool(and a philosopher and karate expert who does his own stitches without anaestheic), a sexy love intrest with huge hair who also happens to be a doctor, an excellent baddie, dopey henchmen, a mean (though extremely pouffy) rival, a tough mentor, awesome music including tito and tarantula of dusk till dawn fame, bar fights and monster trucks running over cars in a showroom. it's as though the makers sat down and decided to compile every adolescent fantasy that they ever had an put them in a movie. highly enjoyable.br /
It is good.. November 3, 2006 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I watched this accidently initially. Its got an awful title, what plot there is has been done before and the acting isn't anything special, but do you know something its actually pretty good. Whenever its on TV I have to watch it, I can't help myself. br /br /Perhaps its the oriental psuedo-philosophy aspect that appeals or maybe its just that I want to be as tough as Dalton (Swayze) is in this film. Might also be that I enjoyed the music by Jeff Healey as well, a great blind blues guitar player, who plays electric guitar flat on his lap.br /br /Anyway it seems to hold up to repeated viewings, so if like me it grabs you (even if you're not sure why) then I wouldn't blame you for buying this.
