Amazon.co.uk Review
Take the banal, the irrelevant and the downright silly, add a female perspective, pour in a hefty dose of comic timing, stir well, and what do you get? Two series of Smack the Pony, the highlights of which are found here. So many of the sketches are very short that watching this in one go might induce epilepsy, but regular doses, little and often, can only prove beneficial. The team of Sally Phillips, Doon MacKichan and Fiona Allen play on women's neuroses (snogging, pubic hair and size of boobs, not necessarily in that order), their preoccupations (finding a man, finding a man and finding a man), their weaknesses (Marks & Spencer, fashion and men) and their competitiveness (more covert than that of the male of the species, and therefore far more deadly). The spoof dating agency clips take in the full range of stereotypes and unfailingly hit the spot. And the prize for the most surreal sketch goes to the one which sets that most bourgeois of institutions--the wedding list--in a sex shop, with the coup de grace: "Two butt plugs ... with love from Kathy and Edward". Not a compilation to give your grannie for her birthday but to be enjoyed in the company of like-minded people (men included).

On the DVD: The one failing here is that the DVD disappointingly adds nothing to the VHS format. Shame!--Harriet Smith

3 out of 5 stars "Best Of" is 2nd best to a "Complete Series" DVD set...   April 25, 2008
Not "Complete Series" but only a "Best Of" unfortunately.

Like all "Best of" comedy dvds, this one is annoying as watching it will just remind you of all the scenes and sketches that are missing...which of course you'll remember from when you saw it on TV first time round. What's here is good, but it ill make you want to see the rest, which isn't here. That's why 'Best of' Dvd's are so annoying. (I'm looking at -you- Best of Adam & Joe; Best of Trigger Happy 1,2,3; 'Best of Balls of Steel'; Armstrong & Miller etc).

Hopefully one of these days there will be a DVD release of "Smack the Pony: The Complete Series" .

Then, can join the ranks of other comedy shows whose DVD's are COMPLETE![Much love to ya 'complete' dvd's out there: Fonejacker; Brass Eye; Jam; Day Today; Big Train; Bo Selecta; Vic Reeves Big Night Out; Sealab 2021; Dream On; Robot Chicken; Police Squad. Thank you for your complete completeness as I first watched you on TV, it's great to view you again the way I remember you!].

Get with the program, Smack The Pony! Release a DVD set of the complete series!

I love this series, but I won't be buying this. A DVD of 80 minutes? That's the length of just 3 episodes. They must be taking the wiss.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely not the best of!   April 24, 2006

I have to agree with those who have questioned whether this DVD is really the best of. I was disappointed! They could have done so much better. Didn't enjoy any of the songs on there, and wonder why on earth they included them when the TV series seemed to have much better material they could've used! In saying that, there were a few really funny sketches, in particular the very first one, but I would probably not recommend this.

2 out of 5 stars A bit amusing, but once is enough   April 19, 2006

As somebody writes, they possibly didn't choose their best stuff for this DVD - I haven't seen the series, so only have this DVD to go on. The only thing that really made me laugh was the sketch about a man buying a bra for his girlfriend. The rest is OK, but one viewing is enough for me. I'm only watching it all the way through because I bought it.

4 out of 5 stars Off the wall, laugh 'til it hurts kind of comedy   March 2, 2006

Smack The Pony wasn't overlooked when it was on TV, but it wasn't given the chance it should of had. Nowadays, with the "Heat Magazine" generation, this show would fit beautifully back into our lives.

The show was always very funny, very typical "girly" humour, but as a male, I still find it achingly funny to see the girls go through their paces, the comedy is off-beat and very random at times, but thats what makes it so much funnier.

The Best Of DVD really captures some of the best moments (no suprise, then) but I feel that because the DVD was made before the final series came on TV, it is missing some pure comedy moments for me (such as the masterpiece of "Would You Like a 'lil dessserrt?).

I think that this is a great starting place for those who want to learn to love this amazing show, I am hoping that sometime soon I will see the full series being released on DVD, and I will be the crazy guy at the front of the line, waiting for my copy.

4 out of 5 stars - its brilliantly funny and great to watch over and over, but It could have done without the annoying "Music Videos" and it could have been full of more classic "STP" moments....
