Amazon.co.uk Review Henry Selick?s IMonkeybone/I is another of the director?s brave experiments in combining various forms of animation following his successes with IThe Nightmare Before Christmas/I and IJames and the Giant Peach/I. Two-dimensional, stop-motion, CGI and muppetry effects whizz by with casual dazzle, but sometimes a collection of great ideas isn?t just enough for moviegoers, and audiences summarily dismissed IMonkeybone/I at the cinema. Shame really, because the eye-popping design deserves as big a screen as possible to drink it all in. p Adapted from a graphic novel the story concerns cartoonist Stu Miley (a suitably schizophrenic Brendan Fraser) who finds himself in a hellish purgatory called Downtown after a freak car accident puts him in a coma. Once there, he must find a way to cheat Death in the person of Whoopi Goldberg. There are complications, however. In the real world his girlfriend (Bridget Fonda) is battling to prevent his family pulling the plug, and his comic character alter ego Monkeybone has come to life as a randy stop-motion whirligig of bad taste and ideas. p Although visually the film is a feast of inventive ideas--the amazing look of the Pyjama Party and the Land of Death are truly impressive--ultimately IMonkeybone/I stands or falls by its sense of humour. But then it?s all a matter of taste. If the sight of a possessed organ donor jumping off the operating table and running around with a broken neck isn?t for you, avoid. If seeing Fraser ham it up as he?s enjoyed doing before in the likes of IGeorge of the Jungle/I, then enjoy!--IPaul Tonks/I

Funny But Rude. August 12, 2008 MonkeyBone is a very odd tale full of werid things going on and a very annoying monkey. There are plenty of laughs in this but it's very rude and probably not suitable for tweleve years old, maybe a higher rating would do better. But it's not without laughs and romance, Brendan Fraser is a classic in this and totally not taking himself seriously. It's worth seeing and having a laugh, just wished they killed off the monkey during the film. Argh!
Beetlejuice meets Roger Rabbit ? November 14, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I rather like Brendon Fraser films - I think he's a pretty reasonable actor and his films are usually bearable. br /BUT... This film was been sold as being a `hilarious comic-adventure' and that's nothing but a BIG FIB !! Also I can see how this film is clearly not to everyone's tastes, as its rather strange and very `arty' in places (though personally I quite like it).br /br /The main character has a mischievous cartoon-character sidekick (reminiscent of a ruder version of Roger Rabbit) and he becomes trapped in a fantasy dream world very much like the afterlife-world in the classic movie Beetlejuice. br /However, this film isn't really an alternate version of Beetlejuice or Roger Rabbit - it seems to be a patch-work quilt made from lots of ideas borrowed from other films... It has elements of the following films :-`Cool World', The Mask, Heaven Can Wait, Shivers (about a rogue spirit inhabiting a revived persons body) and it even a large dash of Alice in Wonderland thrown in for good measure ! br /br /This ISN'T a rip-roaringly funny film, the gags are few and far between... br /Some of the humour in this film is a little `unsubtle' and is certainly unsuitable for small children (e.g, visual gags about erections and at one point human internal organs are being flung around !). br /However, it does have a couple of vaguely amusing moments and the pace of this film is fast so it never becomes dull. br /br /Visually this film is very impressive, any hardcore Tim Burton / Beetlejuice fans will probably enjoy the bizarre surreal suedo-gothic imagery and characters Brendon encounters in his dream world. br /br /The irrepressible Whoopee Goldberg puts in a surprising appearance as `Death', who has to send her Grim Reapers out into the real world to collect souls. Unfortunately - it just seems like Whoppee is in this film for a bit of fun and doesn't really do anything for the part she is playing. br /Some of the characters (particularly a female pussy-lady and a stunted devil-like character) seemed very interesting but we just don't seem to see very much of them. I'd have liked a bit more dialogue and a few more scenes for these characters, rather than just the brief introductions they seemed to get. br /br /Could this film have been better ? Yes ! MUCH !!br /Its not a bad film, its not boring and it seems to work - BUT a better script, more scenes, more characterisation, a bit more humour and perhaps even Jim Carrey in the lead role would have made it much better !
See Beetlejuice rather than this April 23, 2004 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was given occasion, painfully so, during Monkey Bone to think of TimBurton's Beetlejuice. Had Burton slipped into his Planet of the Apesinoherency at that time it might have ended up like this godawful pile of,erm, monkeys.brAs quickly as possible, the plot:brStu Miley (Brendan Fraser) is a cartoonist who, after an accident leaveshim comatose, ends up with his body being possessed by his characterMonkey Bone who has engineered a deal with the god of nightmares to giveStu the old heave ho in exchange for infecting the world withnightmares.brLet's just make a note about timbre here, Death is a character in themovie and the figure of the Grim Reaper is portrayed by Whoopi Goldberg. The worst part about that is that in the context of the movie it makesperfect sense.brI think the main problem with this movie is in the script. I liked thevisual design elements, I liked Fraser, I liked the music, I didn't mindthe concept, I liked the uncredited cameo from Stephen King, Rose McGowanas a cat, god help me I even warmed to Whoopi Goldberg as Death. Theproblem was the movie was 30 mph scenes delivered at 1000 mph. The filmwas very fast, filled with sharp twists and sketch like vignettes, theplot barelled along at a hell of a pace it was hard to hold on to what washappening in terms of plot developments just because there were so many ofthem.brThe thing was, despite the fact that every ten minutes had another newplot point to get over to you the editing, direction and delivery weremuch more laid back. It was this bizarre contrapuntal pacing that did forme in the end. I couldn't hack the what that was happening vs. the how itwas happening. My brain started to melt quite quickly.brThence comes my comparison with Beetlejuice. The main thing that occurredto me is that both films essentially attempt to deliver the same sorts ofinformation to the audience and in roughly equal amounts. If you thinkabout the dense data load an audience has to take on board to deal withthe Burton feature: the vignettes, demonstrations and visual stylings allcrammed into a sprightly feature film with no corners you start to seewhat Monkey Bone was supposed to be about.brThe difference is coherence. Beetlejuice had it, Monkey Bone didn't. It'sa shame, because in the end it wasn't a bad concept and, like I say itkind of charming in many ways. I think the movie would have benefited fromjust a little more drafting to take out its diversity of tangential ideasand to track it in one direction.brI think the film is worth seeing but only if your willing to make up inmental coherence what the movie painfully lacks.
the films o.k. September 2, 2003 The film is o.k. if i had a choice whether or not to watch it i probably wouldn't! it does however have some funny bits but it has a talking monkey and involves a world where everyone it is in a coma!
Monkeybone August 4, 2002 It`s rude! It`s raunchy! It`s totally zany! Brendan Fraser goes bananas in this whacky comedy that breaks all the rules. After a car crash sends repressed cartoonist Stu Miley (Brendan Fraser) into a coma, he and the mischievous Monkeybone (his hilariously horny animated alter-ego) wake up in a wacked-out waystation for lost souls. When Monkeybone takes over Stu`s body and escapes to wreak havoc on the real world, Stu has to find a way to stop him before his sister pulls the plug on reality forever! With great co-stars (including Ghost's Whoopi Goldberg), Monkeybone proves to be an innovative blend of live action and non-stop-motion animation, loaded with must-see, eye-popping special effects and some of the crudest, laugh-out-loud humour. brIt's certainly not one for the prudish - but I for one can't wait for the Monkeybone sequel!!
