Editorial Reviews:

Amazon.co.uk Review
Given that IResident Evil/I is a Paul Anderson movie based on a computer game which was itself highly derivative (especially of George A Romero and James Cameron films), it's probably unfair to complain that it hasn't got an original idea or moment in its entire running time. In the early 1980s, Italian schlock films such as IZombie Flesh Eaters/I and IZombie Creeping Flesh/I tried to cram in as many moments restaged from American originals as possible, strung together by silly characters wandering between monster attacks. This is a much-improved, edited, photographed and directed version of the same gambit. p As amnesiac Milla Jovovich remembers amazing kung fu skills and anti-globalist Eric Mabius mutters about evil corporations, a gang of cliched soldiers with nary a distinguishing feature between them (except for Michelle Rodriguez as a secondary tough chick) are trapped in an underground scientific compound at the mercy of a tyrannical computer--which manifests as a smug little-girl-o-gram--fending off flesh-eating zombies (though gore fans will be disappointed by the film's need to stay within the limits of the 15 certificate) and CGI mutants, not to mention the ever-popular zombie dogs. It's tolerably action-packed, but zips past its borrowings (IAliens/I, ICube/I, IDeep Blue Sea/I) without adding anything that future schlock pictures will want to imitate. p BOn the DVD/B: IResident Evil/I on disc has the expected trailers, both teaser and theatrical; a half-hour making-of; zombie make-up tests; featurettes on music (with Marilyn Manson), production design and costume. A lively commentary track features Anderson, Jovovich, Rodriguez and producer/zombie Jeremy Bolt--Jovovich upbraids Anderson for talking about different gradings of film stock over her nude scene and everyone else talks about how much she hurt them by punching them out during action sequences. Anderson mentions an alternate commentary track with visual effects designer Richard Yuricich, but it isn't included. --IKim Newman/I

4 out of 5 stars Pretty decent film   December 4, 2008
Resident Evil is well known in gaming, one of the best series of games out there. Usually films made for big games don't usually work but it was actually pretty decent. Not the best film I've seen but it definitely kept my eyes glued to the screen. Some of the acting was rather dire, but I loved Milla Jovavich's acting and Michelle Rodriguez's facial expressions, even if the latter was rather cheesy. That's what I liked about it though. It was able to mix dark humour into the film (such as when Milla killed the zombiefied dogs) as well as a scary atmosphere. Some parts, such as the infamous flesh-cutting laser beam scene had me sat there with my hands to my face dreading the next few seconds. Some parts of the film was slow in places but the action-packed scenes made up for it. The storyline was a tad confusing but I was able to get the gist of it. All in all, a good film that didn't quite deserve 5 stars from me but did nearly make it.

3 out of 5 stars COULD HAVE BEEN A LOT BETTER   November 29, 2008
RESIDENT EVIL has a lot of missed oportunities - unfortunately. The atmosphere is about right, the acting quite decent, but the certain something's missing, and that is present through the entire film. Gore hogs will certainly NOT be satisfied - stick to Fulci's or Romero's work and take a pass on this. Pity, could have been a LOT better.

2 out of 5 stars A few memorable moments...   November 26, 2008
I've never played the game this is based on, but I've seen most of the films that this is inspired by. If you've seen any of George Romero's zombie movies then you will know what to expect. Except this isn't as good.... Even the few good moments are lifted from other films (such as Cube). br /br /So what you get here is an occasionally atmospheric but derivative zombie movie set in the depths of a secret establishment. The heroine walks around in a short red dress, which is very nice to look at but any sense of reality starts to fade quickly.... br /br /The best part of the film are the initial scenes, which occur before the heroine appears, showing what caused the problem in the first place. In the same year (2002) 28 Days Later came out. If you want to see a quality modern zombie movie see that instead, it is superior in every way.

5 out of 5 stars ZOMBIES!!!!   October 30, 2008
Guns, Girls, Zombies... GIVE ME MORE!!br /br /Absolutely awesome, fans of resident evil and zombies alike should flock in their masses to watch this. Incredible story, and they managed quite well with special effects on such a low budget.br /br /WATCH IT NOW!!

3 out of 5 stars Cool concepts, characters/effects lacking realism   October 18, 2008
First of, I am not a gamer, and am not familiar with the game. This was the first time I watched this Blu-Ray. The story was engaging in that it was futuristic, and had some cool effects (although over computerized). I am rating it 3 stars, for the story and overall acting/movie. The PQ and AQ were above average, but not demo, with the picture a bit soft in parts. If you're a fan of the genre, give it a rent.
