"Gin and Orange for Sue, Gin and Orange" September 9, 2003 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
I Loved this DVD. I'm a huge fan of French and Saunders, and was a bit daunted at what to expect reading the other reviews, but wasn't at all dissapointed. I believe F&S were at their comic best in the late 80's early 90's which is where most of these sketches came from. Fantastic stuff. If you like the latest offerings from the girls then this DVD probably isn't for you,but if you're a purist like me, then its amazing. The detail and timing in the 'School Trip' sketch is perfect and very very funny. There are a couple of classic sketches not included, again early 90's late 80's ones (BBC Wardrobe girls, 'its not a Jan Leeming' and "Chambermaid!"), would have been excellent additions. Might as well get on the bandwagon and moan about lack of extras on BBC DVD's, which always drags them down a bit.
WHAT A DISSAPOINTMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! August 17, 2003 11 out of 26 found this review helpful
I was really looking forward to this DVD because I love french and sauders but this is terrible. Forget this and buy the best of Victoria wood as it is much better!
Promises a lot...but delivers little August 7, 2002 50 out of 62 found this review helpful
Being a long time fan of French & Saunders, I was looking forward to the release of this DVD. The girls have produced a lot of great comedy. However, much of that great comedy is sadly missing on this DVD. Where, for instance, is that unforettable sketch involving the trial of Ralph MacTell, the Lynda La Plante "characters" ("What a Bleeding Dump!") and the numerous take off of the stars? Instead, we have to endure 90 minute of (mainly) tepid comedy involving the "Fat Men", "Dance Quickies" and "The House of Idiot." There are few genuinely funny routines from their repertoire (thus the 2 stars), but the BBC are well short of the mark by calling this DVD "The Best Of French & Saunders."
