A GUILTY PLEASURE October 29, 2007 Tired of partying all night long, Liam, (Alec Newman) convinces friends Stella, (Laura Belmont) Rob, (Joe Absolom) Webster, (Lukas Haas) Spencer, (James Hillier) Annie, (Melanie Gutteridge) Lucy, (Marsha Thomason) and Joe, (Mel Raido) to try a Ouija board. As they start to die mysteriously, they find evidence that the Ouija board used may have summoned a Djinn through it. After finding the same thing happened years earlier to a coven of devil worshipers, they search for the answers for getting rid of the Djinn. Aware the Djinn is one of them, they race to stop it from taking over their friends.br /br /The Good News: This is one of the better Ouija board thrillers out there. The best part about the film is that there's an abundance of very creepy scenes during an attack. Each one is predated with some wonderful atmosphere and has their own individual moment. The one in the boiler room at the beginning is incredibly creepy, as the setting involved, the constant off-screen bumps, creeks and groans, and the crazy camera angles make it a great suspense scene. A couple of other moments that are quite suspenseful. There is a spot near the end where one of the teens is hiding in a locker and the monster walks up and stares malevolently inside. Then his eyes shift into evil cat's eyes mode. The other big scene is the external shot of the students' house, where the demon stalks a soon-to-be-victim and switches off the lights on each floor one by one as they walk up the stairs, all seen from outside. Even inside, there is a tense moment as that victim quietly walks around the house trying to get out after conveniently leaving his keys upstairs, therefore having to go back up and get them and having to get out once again. The continuing circumstances around it makes it all the better and creepier. After all that, the film does have some great gore and some great deaths. There's some great burn marks over the body, some ripped throats, having their head rammed against a wall repeatedly, and being stabbed with a wooden stake, among other great deaths. The great news about the gore is that it's never over-the-top and is just the perfect amount for the type. The very rapid pace is quite perfect, keeping it moving along nicely without a lot of down-time in between the kills. It's a really decent film.br /br /The Bad News: There's relatively few points I can fault with this one. The main one is that there's a real cliched feeling to everything involved. The Ouija board is brought in with very little creative thought, the fact that nothing really happens out of the ordinary and the ending twist being so obvious to guess are classic examples of this. They are the main examples of what's wrong, as it's nothing new that's been seen before.br /br /The Final Verdict: It's nothing new, but there's at least a lot of suspense and some decent deaths to aid things along. It's worth watching if you're into those kinds of films, but don't expect nothing ground-breaking in the process.br /
TV MOVIE OR JUST CRAP? October 26, 2007 What a stinker this was. br /br /Predictable and naff story supported by average acting. I'm surpised they couldn't produce a TV series from this as a pilot film.br /br /If you have the option of watching this film or having a boil lanced, call your GP.
The ouija says "all die" ... i nearly did - of fright!! March 12, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Wow! This movie REALLY hit a nerve - the nerve that caused my hand to grab for several cushions to hide behind! pBefore watching this movie, I had not really heard a great deal about it. It is, after all, a virtually unheard of director and an all british cast! However, after watching it I cand for the life of me fathom WHY I hadn't heard more about it! pThe basic idea of the movie is a bunch of rowdy students, who, whilst drunk and / or high decide to play the ouija board as a joke... with disasterous consequences. The movie follows the ill-fated group, lead by Joe Absolam (of eastenders fame but much better suited to his role in long time dead), as each one of them tries to avoid being picked off. pThe theme of the movie is very well researched and highly accurate which is always pleasing - it means the writers directo actually care about what they put out! pThe movie is full of twists, turns and jump moments! Its fairly unpredictable too, which is a frefreshing change! I spent 2/3rds of my time watching from behind a scatter cushion with my heart trying to jump out of my chest... and then had to sleep with the lights on for the next two nights!!! pExcellent movie that is well worth watching!

Great film February 28, 2005 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I went to see this film with 3 friends. Having seen a number of horror films, i can honestly say this was probably one of the most frightning. The horror is one more of the un-predictability of "what happens next". I can remember the under the bed scene and then the body drops to the floor, most of the audience sreamed at that point. A great film.
