  Brings Back Memories . . . . May 24, 2008 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used to watch Solo on the local PBS station when I was young and 'Solo'br /myself and wanted to add it to my DVD collection. Solo apparently was not as popular in the US as other Britcoms because I couldn't find the DVDs anywhere.br /br /While browsing Amazon.co.uk recently, I found Solo and immediately order the DVD set(forgetting that it might not be viewable on my DVD player). Shipping was prompt from the UK. I had my DVDs in no time. But my DVD player said that the DVD was regional and could not be viewed. I did a google search on 'playing Regional DVDs' and found a way to program my particular DVD player so that it will play regional DVDs. br /br /Solo is as funny and sad as I remember it. And while the show may have it's flaws, I can totally relate to the story line because I was once a thirty something solo girl trying to find my way in relationships and in a career.br /br /br /br /
Underrated Awesome Series October 23, 2006 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, we can't get this little gem of Britcom over stateside. Still, it remains one of my all time favorites. Felicity is fantastic on her own as the meandering, struggling for independence and identity, early 30 something woman of our times. This is a classic -- funny and sad at the same time -- and for any woman who has tried to "find herself," this is the show to which you can relate. Simply excellent, but sadly overlooked.
Mostly dreadful but kinda leaves you wanting more at the end February 7, 2006 5 out of 12 found this review helpful
The first series is terrible. Gemma makes no real effort to rid herself of her deceitful boyfriend. The premise for all the comedy and drama. Above Gemma live two girls who could bore for England, and who's presence is an irrelevance. Add to this Felicity Kendall continously lapses into her Babara Good persona. There are one or two excuses for laughter but even these are assassinated by the premature use of canned laughter at full volume.pSeries two is infinitely better. The girls upstairs are replaced by Sebastian the Stud. Michael Howe is excellent in the role. Sebastian and Gemma become surrogate brother and sister This odd relationship allows for character development and some good humour. Sadly rest of the show remains apalling and at times is quite morbid. pThe canned laughter machine is still in use, but much more subtley this series.pThe target audience is certainly female so maybe I'm missing something. However I doubt many women will find it easy to feel sorry for the delicious Felicity Kendal's angst with men falling for her at every turn.
